Top tips for hiring a car at Malaga Costa del Sol Airport

  • While there are public transport services in Málaga, organising a car hire at Málaga Airport gives you full freedom to explore the city and its surrounding areas at your own pace, and venture wherever you desire. You can get a bus or train from Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport to the city centre; however, having your own transport can be much easier than carrying luggage and waiting for scheduled transport at the start of your adventures in Málaga.
  • There is a generous selection for car hire at Málaga Airport, with a large number located inside the airport for your convenience, and some other Málaga Airport car hire companies with offices close by offering a courtesy shuttle bus service. You will find the main offices located in Terminals 2 and 3 of the airport, and once you have arrived you will see signs to direct you to these services, as well as to the shuttle bus to the offices outside of the airport.
  • Depending on the company you have chosen for your car hire at Málaga Airport, you will need to return your rental car either via the Car Rental Return area at the airport or directly back to the car rental office you collected your vehicle from. The offices for car hire at Málaga Airport that are located inside the building will usually use the Car Rental Return service, and you simply need to follow the signs to find it. Other companies provide a courtesy shuttle bus service to the airport once you have completed your car hire return.
  • Weekends tend to be the busiest times for car hire at Málaga Airport, with Saturdays usually seeing the most activity. If you are collecting or returning a rental car on a weekday, you may find a wait time in the late morning through to lunch time, so if possible try to get in early or later in the afternoon.
  • Book your car hire at Malaga Costa del Sol Airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

FAQs about hiring a car at Malaga Costa del Sol Airport

  • Where are the car rental companies situated at Málaga Airport?

There are multiple offices for car hire at Málaga Airport, with some located inside the airport and some located either in the parking lot or on an avenue running parallel to the airport. Once you have arrived in Málaga Airport, you can simply follow the signs to the rental car offices in terminal 2 or 3 of the airport, or to the courtesy shuttle bus service to the other car rental offices outside of the airport.

  • Which rental car companies are easiest at Málaga Airport?

Avis, Europcar, Sixt and Hertz have offices located within the terminals, meaning you can skip the shuttle bus service from Málaga Airport to your car hire office. As larger companies, they are also likely to have the most availability and fit any specific preference you may have for your hire car in Málaga.

  • What kind of rental car should I choose at Málaga Airport?

While of course choosing your particular vehicle for your car hire in Málaga is down to personal preference, it may be a good idea to consider a vehicle with air conditioning to keep you comfortable in the warm climate, and with a navigation system to help you navigate unfamiliar routes and roads. If you are sticking to the city and main roads, a compact or intermediate vehicle will absolutely cover your needs, however if you are exploring further and perhaps into national parks, an SUV may be a good choice.

  • What type of documentation is required to rent a car at Málaga Airport?

The usual requirements for hiring a car while in Spain are to be over the age of 21 and provide a valid full driver’s license, passport, and credit card in your name. These requirements may slightly differ from company to company, but ensure that you have all of these when booking and collecting your hire car. You may also need to obtain an International Driver's Permit, so be sure to prepare this in advance.

  • Which car hire companies will pick you up at Malaga Costa del Sol Airport?

Car hire companies that offer shuttle or pick-up services from Malaga Costa del Sol Airport to off-airport locations include Ace, Alamo, Autoclick Rent A Car, Autos Lido, Avis, Budget, Centauro, Delpaso, Dollar, and Economy Rent a Car.

It was extremely difficult to find the Malaga parking slot near the train station: the address on google point to a hotel parking, which is not the right one. When you finally reach the right parking, good luck for finding the Hertz return spot. After that, you need to walk up to the street level office. By that time you're late and they charge you one extra day. This is the definition of a scam. Besides, they never sent me my contract by email despite me having asked for it.

Really pushy at the pick-up desk. Said that the insurance I purchased from Priceline wasn't valid and tried to sell me more insurance - really pushed hard for me to buy more. Then tried to sell me an upgrade that was 3x my daily rate, which was more funny than anything else. Rental car places are known for being a bit pushy and dishonest, but this was next level. I wouldn't rent from them again, and have been watching my credit card like a hawk for other "extra" charges.

I was never again rent from Alamo, National or Enterprise again. Got to the location at 11:30pm and they were closed even after giving me assurances that they would wait for me. They had my flight information and knew exactly at what time I was arriving and never bothered to wait for me. I got stranded at their location at their location way outside of the airport with no other means of transportation at close to midnight with my 11 year old, my wife and all of our luggage. NEVER AGAIN!

Information up front needs to improve. One needs an international drivers license when you come with a US drivers license. That is cumbersome if one does not know that. Second, the distance to the office is not that big, but once you are there, there is no choice anymore to walk away. They do not take AMEX. Should be clear upfront too. Because of the insurance that one gets if the car rental is paid by AMEX. Take pictures!!!! They are of course easy when you get the car, but upon return, the friendliness goes down considerably. Nevertheless, the ladies who checked the car turned out to be nice and considerate. Of course shady companies have this reputation of making money on the side, and that is why they are cheap(er). The office is professional, but just be wise. Make sure you know the facts, and you document the status of the car meticulously.

They try to scam their customers. They require a 1400euro damage hold which is more than any other company. They do not take U.S. Credit Cards for this hold and do not accept cash so if you don't have a local credit card, they force you to take their insurance. I don't need insurance since this is all covered by my U.S. credit card. And, since they know that they are forcing customers to take insurance, they charge 75euros per day for their insurance vs. the 25euros per day rental price. When I asked to cancel the reservation, they said that I they would not refund the money I had already paid. They are basically stealing. I've rented hundreds of cars all over the world and never had this issue. Avoid the bait with low cost and switch to the most expensive car rental with insurance. You are better off using a standard car rental company.

I liked that RecordGo were in the main airport terminal. The car was ready and reasonably new (around 20K km and with Apple CarPlay) and RecordGo said they were only interested in scratches of more than 4cm. No fuss, all worked well and I enjoyed several hundred trouble-free km in the vehicle. Drop-off at the end was equally easy.

I booked pick up for 11 am we got through quicker than expected but when I went to collect at 10.15 am I was told we would have to wait until 11 am so we had to sit in the airport car rental area wasting time. I can see no reason for having to wait. The car itself was scratched, clunky, not the VW Polo advertised and not similar in regard to the driving experience. The Vauxhall we were given was clunky. The tyres were not fully inflated. The oil light came on. The car was clean inside, but grubby on the outside. It had a car rental sticker peeling off on the driver door. The cost was high and poor value for money.

Very unhappy with my experience. When picking up my car, the agent advised that they couldn't accept my credit card because it had my initial "P" instead of my name "Peter". The only conditions he would accept it was if I paid extra €80 under the guise of excess insurance, which incidentally I had already bought before travelling. I was left in a position where I had no choice other than pay, however I am extremely unhappy with this treatment. I have used this credit card throughout my life all across the world when booking flights, cars, hotels and never have I come across a situation like this. I will never use this company again and will ensure that I inform as many people as I can to do likewise.

AVOID NIZACAR! The queue at pickup is long and painfully slow. The staff have attitude. The car was dirty with bird poo ina few places. There were lots of minor dents and scratches. Returning the car is even worse. If you don’t take their ridiculously expensive fully comp insurance, they inspect it with glee and enthusiasm looking for the tiniest mark in order that they can kick in their €2~300 sting. I think their business model is to offer poorly maintained cars cheap and make money either on insurance or punishing you for the slightest extra mark on a scratched and dented car. To make matters worse, upon return you get nothing more than a verbal acceptance and have to wait for an email to confirm. You get nothing in writing at the time. So you either walk out hoping it’s going to be ok and they won’t find something extra after or you wait for your email before getting on the transfer to the airport. I’ve rented from lots of companies in Malaga through the years. This one is the pits. Never again Niza.
