I last visited 20 years ago. I remember the food was excellent but the bed was uncomfortable and the room too hot. This time the food was still very good and the bed and room temperature very comfortable. Very attentive staff.
No problems with anything. This was the final stop of my little tour. Unfortunately it was a long drive back home.
The hospitality staff were excellent.. especially Kath she has been so sensitive and friendly towards our family who are bereaved and spending time in our late mothers favourite hotel.
Room numbers a little confusing
The Borrowdale has a particular almost idiosyncratic character. One might even say - quirky - set in a traditionally historic vision of aspiring oppulence that probably never was! However the pastiche kind of convinces and in it's own way this, at superficial levels made the place feel homely, if to the middle classes of old!
It is a matter of personal taste but I thought the dining room menu and the actual food on the plate fell short of the trappings of haute cuisine being presented. One would not normally expect a top class chef to use mono sodium glutamate to enhance the taste of his "arouse bouche'. I believe the chef this establishment may have used this ingredient judging by own physical response! The atmosphere in the dining room despite the modest and friendly international staff was stuffy -- with over done bruised and tarnished EPNS plated receptacles . Heavy drapes and well trodden carpet added to what might feel sumptuous luxury for some, but the theatre had little positive effect on me, this is a personal reflection of course. Our bedroom could be defined as such as it had a bed in it --- but one had to carefully move around it to try and find floor space. The en suite facility was fine in terms of practicality but in a very scaled down sense. I stand at a lofty 5"6" with frame to proportionately match -- had I been of guardsman proptions I would have needed to be disassembled to shower. The door to the en suite - a sliding affair from a by gone industrial era was a dubious choice. Dogs. If you like dogs, and I grew up with them and have no problem with the creatures, the Borrowdale is for you. It is the Crufts of the Derwent. They were like a fashion accessory for a large proportion of guests.
The bathroom was especially nice and the bedroom had everything necessary. Good to have a well-stacked hospitality tray, as this is rarely the case these days. The food in the restaurant was excellent.
I had a single room, which was very small - I could only close the door with difficulty, because the end of the bed got in the way. I also found getting up to the second floor with my luggage quite challenging, as there is no lift, and no help was offered. I dined in the bar, where I was ignored for about 20 minutes, before my order was taken, and then only because I went up to the waitress and asked to be attended to!
Older style country hotel. Big comfortable room. Excellent food.
Still some opportunities for modernising when compared with 4 star hotels around the world.
