KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Tyler

  • To comfortably and easily explore the city during your trip, make sure to book car rentals in Tyler. The town has limited public transportation, making Tyler car rentals one of the best ways to go between neighborhoods and visit nearby cities. Having access to a car is particularly handy when it comes to exploring sights that are removed from the city center, such as Tyler State Park, which is approximately a 30min drive from downtown. There is also Faulkner Park, which can be reached by car in around 25min total.
  • Tyler is located in Texas, known for its vast open spaces and long stretches of highway with fewer gas stations. If you plan to take a road trip in the area, it's essential to plan and ensure you have enough fuel. If you’ll be driving your cheap car rental on Tyler’s Farm-to-Market Road 14, which runs through rural areas of Smith County and connects several small towns, ensure you have enough gas in your tank to get you to the next station. County Road 48, which runs through Cherokee County, has fewer gas stations, especially in sparsely populated areas. Texas State Highway 155 heading to Palestine from Tyler also has fewer gas stations, especially in the rural parts of Anderson and Smith Counties.
  • If you will be flying into Tyler Pounds Regional Airport (TYR), it can be convenient to pick up car rentals in Tyler directly from this transport hub. Tyler Pounds Regional Airport has its own on-site car rental center which is placed directly inside of the Arrivals terminal. You can find a few different companies that have desks in this center, including Hertz and Enterprise.
  • There are several major local roads that new drivers need to know before driving cheap car rentals in Tyler. Loop 323 runs around the city and connects many major roads and highways. Broadway Avenue is a major north-south road that runs through the heart of Tyler and is home to many businesses, restaurants, and shops. State Highway 64 is an east-west highway that runs through the northern part of the city and connects Tyler to other towns in the area. State Highway 31 is another east-west highway that runs through the southern part of the city and connects Tyler to other towns in the area. Be careful with cheap Tyler car rentals on Highway 110, a scenic highway known for its curves and hills, which can be particularly challenging to navigate during inclement weather.
  • Before operating car rentals in Tyler, always make sure that you read up on a few different local driving laws and tips. For example, all children under the age of seven must always be secured in a child passenger safety seat system when they are in a vehicle in the state of Texas. If an adult is sitting in the front seat, they are required to wear a seat belt. The area has quite a few ramp-metering signals on its freeway on ramps, so be on the lookout for these.
  • Electric vehicles are better for the environment, and if you have an electric Tyler car rental, you'll need to know about the free EV charging stations. Free EV charging stations are located at Broadway Square Mall, Tyler Junior College West Campus, and the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, some hotels, such as the Holiday Inn Tyler - Conference Center, also offer free EV charging for their guests.
  • Make sure you don’t get stuck in traffic by avoiding being on the road during local rush hour times. In Tyler, rush hour typically falls between 6 am and 8:30 am and 5 pm and 7:30 pm. There are a few different roads that are particularly prone to congestion and these include freeways 69, 110, and 323. If you happen to be driving in Tyler when it is raining, make sure to drive with extra caution, as the roads tend to be more difficult during these weather conditions.
  • Book your car hire in Tyler at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Intermediate car hire in Tyler are around 15% cheaper than other car types, on average

Cons:

I went to pick up the car, they had hours up to 3 pm posted at the counter for the Saturday 11/28/2020. I was there just a few minutes before 3 pm. Nobody at the counter. Could here music playing in the adjacent employees room, and a personal bag was sitting in the counter chair. Knocked on the employee door twice and waited until 3:15. Couldn’t get assistance or a car. Looked up hertz rental and one was open till 4 pm near the airport in Tyler. Drove to this one before 4 pm, but it was closed also. Therefore wasn’t able to obtain a rental car to get me to Dallas love airport by 4:00am Sunday morning,. so required family member to drive 200 extra miles Sunday morning to go out of there way to drop me off at the airport . It would be better to have your places open to the times they post they are.

Pros:

I would like my reservation honored. I needed a car. I had a reservation. Everyone there waiting had a reservation. We were all left stranded. We did not even get a cancellation. The hertz crew was home for the day. They left five hours early.

Cons:

Be open. Honor your reservations. Keep open during your business hours. If you want to make it right you can pay the $25 cab ride into town, the $90 I was forced to pay at the hotel and maybe the cost of car rental from Enterprise.

Oct 2016

KAYAK

Pros:

Technically, I did get a rental car, which is the essence of the service, I guess. It had wheels, went forward and back, etc.

Cons:

-Rental car available almost 2 hours late, which caused a ripple effect of delays throughout the trip. If the pilots of our plane hadn't agreed to take some of the members of my party to their meetings, it would have been a disaster. --I reserved an economy car, but was given a mini-van. I usually don't mind being given an upgrade for free, but this was a little drastic. The fuel costs twice as much and I have no experience parking such a boat. -- It was dirty with questionably aired tires. We were running so late that we asked the agent to just give us the dirty car, but note that I would have preferred an on time and clean car. -- We were at a somewhat separate part of the airport, where the rental cars were supposed to be when we arrived. They weren't AND we couldn't get anyone on the phone, over maybe like 5 tries. -- The agent working probably was doing his best, but he was understaffed and simply didn't have cars available to give us. Basically no resources to help us. Having this service work is crucial in a town that doesn't have a bunch of transit and taxi options.

KAYAK

Cons:

Kayak reserved an unlimited mileage on a Premium vehicle. We called ahead to find out Enterprise in Tyler doesn't even lease Premium level and not at the unlimited mileage anyway. Enterprise has a business model to tell you what you want to hear and then you get there and they don't have what they tell. Happened to us and another customer while we were there.

Pros:

Price was very good for a holiday weekend. Compact car, but very roomy. Very happy with the car in every respect.

Cons:

The young man who assisted us at pickup seemed brusque and unfriendly at first, but warmed up later. The young woman who helped us with our return was swamped with returns--there should have been someone to help her. (She did say her help had just quit that day.) She, herself, did great! She was cheerful and calm with all of us even though there were lots of people waiting to be helped and more came in as others left.
