KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Reading

  • Choosing to rent a car while in Reading is one of the wisest moves you can do, since you'll have the opportunity to visit several exciting places nearby the city easily if you rent a car. Most bus stations in Reading are only operational on weekdays and also stop at particular stations, where you will need to walk around the city, and it's best if you rent a car, especially if you have luggage. When traveling as a group or with family and kids, using a car rental in Reading is the best choice you make while visiting the city. Enjoy Tommy DiNic's exquisite sandwiches and meals in Reading if you are a sandwich lover.
  • When driving car rentals in Reading, Pennsylvania, remember that some roads might be congested or closed during major events or festival seasons, such as the West Reading Ice ‘N Spice Festival in January or the Handcrafted Holiday Market in December. These events attract large crowds, resulting in significant traffic snarl-ups in the city. Usually, authorities divert motorists to other roads. Thus, you will need to allow more time for travel if you are going somewhere in your cheap car rental in Reading during this time of the year. Still, you may find long queues at the garage, resulting in slow service.
  • Most likely, travelers to Reading will mostly fly into and out of Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), around 72 miles to Reading city, and Lancaster International Airport (LNS), around 32 miles to Reading. Car rentals in Reading are provided by partners, including Hertz and Enterprise. The rental agencies are located at Zone 2, which you will follow through from the baggage claim area at the exit terminal in PHL. At Lancaster Airport, you will find the rental car desk located at the entrance while arriving from the parking lot and at the front entrance on the right at the exit terminal for the arrivals.
  • Reading has a few one-way streets that you must look out for to avoid confusion, especially if you are new. Take a keen eye on road signs and markings when driving on these roads, lest you get confused and head in the wrong direction. You can identify one-way streets by marked arrows which point in the direction of traffic flow. Drive along these arrows and follow the same direction as the other motorists. Some popular one-way streets in Reading include Franklin Street eastbound and Washington Street westbound.
  • There are a few things to see if you intend to travel across the commonwealth for the first time, so you'll know what to expect along the road. You could need to know that while driving in Reading, you'll be transitioning between country and urban roads. Also, as a new driver, you should prepare for road tests, especially the licensing test process. Avoid mistakes like improper lane changing, lacking control of the steering wheel, and also make sure you're not distracted to avoid colliding with motorists and pedestrians.
  • Agencies offering cheap car rentals in Reading require you to be 21 or older. In addition, you must provide a valid driver’s license, which you have held for a minimum of one year, that is registered in your name. Most importantly, the name on your driver’s license must match your residential address. Furthermore, agencies require renters to carry major credit or debit cards in their names. Be sure to check with your service provider regarding their policy. Not all Reading car rentals accept debit cards. If you are visiting from a foreign country, you must produce a valid passport and driver’s license from your home country. An International Driver’s Permit is mandatory if your driver’s license is not in English.
  • Avoid rush hour in Reading by traveling there before or after it. One of the worst times in the US, when rush hour is most intense, is between 5 pm and 6 pm and between 7am and 8am in the morning on weekdays. Since alternate side routes are similarly backed up during rush hour, it is best to avoid the intersections altogether. These crossings are particularly notorious for having heavy traffic. Also, remember that Reading is Pennsylvania, and you should travel with additional caution during winter.
  • Book your car hire in Reading at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Mini car hire in Reading are around -57% cheaper than other car types, on average

Pros:

Clean vehicle, pleasant and efficient staff. Easy after hourd drop.

Cons:

Extremely noisy on the highway - maybe the tires or the drive train? Loud enough that it was difficult to hear phone conversation. It drove fine and got reasonable mileage. I had a five hour drive reach way and ended up with a headache both times. Also, there was no ice scraper.

Got a phone call one hour before pickup to let me know that no cars were available for me. The lady was not polite and didn't even offer to check other locations. Car was very dirty...I left it with the windows open for 3 hours just so we can get it in...and whatever you do not prepay for gas because they are going to charge you a lot of money for it...they charged me 63 dollars for a Toyota Camry I drove for 100 miles, and it was close to full when I dropped it off.
