KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Quito

  • Ecuador has made a considerable improvement to several of its major highways, adding more lanes to make roads safer and easier to travel. Although there are other options for getting around Quito, your car rentals in Quito will not only give you more flexibility but will also give you the chance to explore cities and towns along the Ecuadoran coast, like Cuenca 7h away, the waterfalls in Banos 3h away, the forests in Tena, or Papallact also 3h away.
  • The rental car offices at the Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) are conveniently located within the main terminal just outside the baggage claim. Make sure you have your voucher, credit card, driver’s license, and passport in hand before proceeding to the rental counter. The airport is located about 11 miles east of Quito.
  • Sunday mornings in Quito are generally quieter and a great way to get a first sense of driving in the city, and to get a feel for traffic signs in a foreign language and common driving practices. Things to keep in mind are that stop signs aren’t always respected, unless there is oncoming traffic. Don’t be surprised that drivers frequently use their horns and hazard lights. When approaching a traffic circle, yield to the traffic already in the traffic circle. Keep your eyes open for cars stopping or moving and also pedestrians, as jaywalking is common throughout the city. International navigation apps will help find our way around the city.
  • Traffic is not much of an issue in Quito, thanks to a rule called pico y plata. This means that during the heaviest rush hour times from 6:30am to 8am and 3pm to 7:30pm, cars ending in a certain license plate number are prohibited from circulating. Be sure to check which day your car rental is not supposed to drive and plan accordingly to avoid a fine. Quito is also susceptible to heavy fog, mist, and rain, which can block visibility. Be sure to use the appropriate headlights and drive slowly.
  • Book your car hire in Quito at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Full-size car hire in Quito are around -1% cheaper than other car types, on average

Required insurance and would not accept the prepaid insurance we bought through Kayak. You also only get 100KM per day, so extra charges can add up.

I reserved a car for 6:00 am. Got there shortly before then and nobody was there. We waited until 6:20 am before asking the man at the Europcar window what was going on and he informed us that Alamo does not do single day rentals. This is not a 24 hour service, and they do not respect reservations. Do not use.

I liked two things about Avis 1) Originally I booked car via Rentalcars.com. They had confirmed my booking and 1 day before pick up they cancelled it without even sending me email or letting me know! I chat with their support and they said: Sorry, we cannot help you. WTF?! So I had to arrange everything after arrival - at Avis counter there was very nice guy with fluent English that helped us a lot finding a good deal that would be similar to original booking. Thanks again Mr. Francisco P.! Great help! 2) Our car got some engine issue by the end of our trip in the middle of the national park. Avis call center was helpful and they brought us new (much bigger car) in several ours with no question or extra charge. So: Avis rulez - I will use it again next time Rentalcars.com sucks - never more

Avis does not honor rentals done through Kayak. Avis don't recognize the car size that Kayak gave me or the insurance I signed up for through Kayak. I ended up spending almost 3 times the amount that quoted through Kayak. I will never do business with neither Avis nor Kayak again. The burrito with a competitive market place is that I choices. I will do what I can to spread the word so other people don't need to experience the same

From the begging of the rental, it was a disaster. Two hours into the trip the AC went out in he car. I called their support number only to be made to wait 2 hours so they could send a guy without tools to put his hand infront of the vent and confirm that the AC did not work. Then to be told they dis not have another car to give me. When I finally arrived at Guayaquil (where they had another car for me 240 miles away) the people at the counter had left more than 10 minutes early and forced me to lose an extra day. But the best part was the way Ivan Quillupangi (fleet manager), tried blaming me for scratches on a car that were marked on the paperwork pre-rental and for three tire blow outs due to low air pressure (that was also marked on the paperwork). Not only that but questioning why I changed out the tires intead of calling, even after I advised that the tires blew in an area with no reception at 11:00pm on the side of a mountain. I liked the way that when I told them the brakes in the car were pulsating the response from them was that it was impossible because they had just changed them; however, they left the old brake rotors that were warped and caused the pulsating and lack of stopping power. I liked that once I got back to their Guayaquil office and showed them all this they said that although they can see what I am telling them, the guy on the phone 250 miles away that can't see says different that the proof of pictures, paperwork and items present. When I claimed the scratches were on the paperwork, they said that it was a "misprint" when I showed them the warpage on he brake rotors they pretended not to understand telling me the brakes had been changed. when speak My if the tires they said well you could have hit something and when I asked them to show me what exactly makes them say that or to show me on the tire or rim any impact point, they simply shrugged and said that that is what the guy from Quito (who'd never seen me or the car) said. Last but not least they expected me to provide good customer service by taking the car to and from the airport for inspections. Lastly when I got to the airport they did not have a comparable vehicle for me (7 passenger SUV) and merely had a compact, and expected me to provide a new deposit (after having given $2,400.00 on the current car). In short I was left at the airport stranded without a car. To add insult to injury Hertz ecuador has nothing to do with Hertz US. In all Inlost 4 days out of my trip dealing with their problems and spent an additional 3 days without a car, was forced to buy flights from Guayaquil to Quito and cancel parts of my trip.

Only complaint is customer service and communication. Things were not clear since pick up, when they told us we could pick up at the airport and gave us a total cost, then last minute saying that there was an extra fee for picking up at airport. We decided to pick up at the place in ave shyris and had to wait over 30 minutes for the car to arrive. At drop off the over charge us for not keeping the toll receipts with us when they never asked us to do so. I do not recommend Europcar. They are not clear with their fees and communication is poor.

Cons:

not scam people and be honest about the fact that they rent cars that are already pretty well damaged, it's literally impossible to capture every single bit of the damage that already existed on the car, so of course they can point to something that wasn't specifically photographed. Especially when they completely neglected to take photos of the ENTIRE front of the car which had by far the most damage prior to me renting it. WOW what a dishonest company!

Cons:

There is NO thrifty car rental at quito airport. We had a reservation that was confirmed in person in December and when we returned to pick up the car in February we were told thrifty had been replaced by europcar and they would not honor our price and we were charged 3 times what the reservation

Cons:

The car was horrible. A Chevy Spark with bad brakes and all banged up. I wanted to cancel the reservation and they told me they couldn't refund me for 10 days. They made me wait an hour just to tell me they couldn't simply refund my money while constantly trying to upsell me. Horrible experience.

Pros:

Cons:

Everything was horrible. Service, the quality of cars were miserable. the first car that I got broke down within 20 minutes in the middle of the highway and the replacement refused to go above 40 km/hr. The customer care giggled throughout my panic stricken phone call when the car broke down in the middle lane of a highway when cars were moving at 90km/hr. The engine started emitting smoke. The local agency officials giggled and ridiculed me, in Spanish language assuming that I do not understand anything, for being a women driver. I had to ask them to stop and remind them that I do understand the language even if I do not speak it. Then the giggling and smiling stopped. They refused to return the car before the contract was up. But I could not drive the car cause it was in such a bad condition. They have sexists employees who spent more time making fun of me than trying to solve the problem. I had to leave the car at the location without any written acknowledgement for the return and file an official complain with both Thrifty and better business bureau to get my money back including the deposit which should have been returned with the car. I finally went to Avis who gave me a car in a perfect condition which could easily be driven even in mountainous roads.
