it will be automatic, not manual, so look up how to drive one in advance if you haven't done so before. You're pretty much guaranteed to need 4x4 at some point
AlexandraJun 2025
If you are using your credit card insurance, bring the bank letter printed out.
Carolyn DJun 2025
Don’t buy the website insurance. It isn’t adequate for international rentals. I had to get a refund.
Verified travelerApr 2025
Book directly through the car company or when in country. And get the insurance in Costa Rica.
KostaApr 2025
Ask about the "mandatory fees" before booking!!!
Verified travelerMar 2025
Don't use Payless. And - the car companies in Costa Rica will charge you for liability insurance no matter what you may have paid for during your booking.
Verified travelerDec 2024
Rent at known brands like Avis, Hertz, etc and get an AWD/4WD for sure
Verified travelerFeb 2025
Book directly though a rental car company not a third party site
Verified travelerJan 2025
Don’t bother with your own insurance because you are made to pay for extortionate mandatory insurance when you get there anyway. Test sitting in all the seats before setting off as they may not be as clean or dry as they first appear. Inspect the vehicle and under chairs and under mats, etc. for insect infestations.
Verified travelerAug 2024
If you are traveling outside of the city, I would definitely recommend an SUV, it will be more comfortable traveling up and down the mountains. I have been twice and both times had a Geely they are very comfortable and run very efficiently .
Verified travelerJul 2024
The car was great and so was the service. My only discrepancy is with the pricing and insurance packages. Just ensure you have ample proof of what you paid and a receipt on hand so they honor it. If not you're at the mercy of what shows up on their system. Apparently, just a confirmation isn't enough.
Juan PabloJul 2024
Please consider mandatory insurance of over $50 a day.
Verified travelerMar 2024
The main thing I wish I knew was that I did not have to add insurance from the US, simply adding it when picking up the car is easier cheaper and covers a lot more as well. I was able to cancel what I added from the US thank God.
RonMar 2024
Rent an SUV because the roads can be very bad and be prepared for constant traffic jams if you are driving in the cities!
EricJan 2024
Driving in CR is pretty easy, but just realize due to traffic and road conditions, it takes about 30% longer than planned to get to your destination.
DeenaJan 2024
Winding hilly roads but overall in good condition. Keep an eye out for dogs, people, and bikes sharing the road!
kyleFeb 2024
Stick with the common rental companies and inspect your car closely.
Verified travelerSept 2023
Driving is not so bad, be aware of the ‘no lights’ at night. Get a 4x4 if you can an if you plan on going on the roads
Verified travelerJun 2023
Definitely drive and you 100% do not Have to have a 4×4, unless you plan on off reading. We drove 3 hours to LA Fortuna. Very nice roads, easy to understand the Spanish Stop sign and yield. You will pick it up quick. Slow driving because you are going round narrow mountain but really great! Definitely don't be afraid to do it

Google Maps worked well for us, downloaded prior to arrival, although we tended to have decent coverage through T-Mobile.

KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Alajuela

  • Public transportation in Costa Rica can be time-consuming and confusing, adding unnecessary stress to your travel plans. With cheap car rentals in Alajuela, visitors have the flexibility to explore Alajuela and its surrounding areas at their own pace and convenience. You can design your itinerary to suit your preferences, visit remote destinations, and stay as long as you want. Many of the tourist attractions in Alajuela and surrounding areas, such as the Poas Volcano, La Paz Waterfall, and Zoo Ave, are also best explored by Alajuela car rentals.
  • San José Juan Santamaria Intl Airport (SJO) is the main international airport in Alajuela, Costa Rica. The rental car offices are located at the airport terminal, so it is very convenient to rent Alajuela car rentals upon arrival at the airport. San José Tobias Bolanos Intl Airport (SYQ) is also located in Alajuela, but it is a smaller airport, primarily serving domestic flights. There are rental car offices located outside the airport terminal building, and a shuttle service is available to transport passengers to the car rental office.
  • When driving cheap car rentals in Alajuela, there are several things a person should know to ensure their safety and the safety of other road users. Some yield signs may indicate “alto” which means stop. The road conditions in Alajuela can vary from well-maintained to unpredictable terrain. In rural areas, road improvements may be long overdue, and there may be potholes to look out for. Moreover, the driving style in Alajuela tends to be more aggressive and impatient than in other parts of the country. The most common vehicles on the road in Alajuela are small four-door sedans.
  • Traffic in Alajuela can be heavy, particularly during peak hours in the morning and afternoon rush hours. Rush hour times in Alajuela generally occur from approximately 6 am to 9 am and from 4 pm to 7 pm. During these times, it is best to avoid the major highways and roads, such as Route 27 and Route 1, as they tend to experience the heaviest traffic. Instead, use alternative routes or consider driving cheap car rentals in Alajuela during off-peak hours. Alajuela has a rainy season that lasts from May to November, and the roads can become slippery and muddy during this time. This is particularly the case in rural areas or unpaved roads.
  • Small hire cars in Alajuela are around 49% cheaper than other car types, on average

Don't get scammed!!! I booked with Avis through QEEQ with the belief that AVIS is a reputable brand. After booking, I read countless reviews about people being scammed by AVIS at SJO and LIR in Costa Rica, so I came fully prepared: international driver’s license, printed voucher, Visa insurance letter and policy, and I even videoed the car at pickup and drop-off. It didn’t matter. I booked a full-size/premium SUV for $698.75 USD and was given a Nissan X-Trail instead, a lower-class vehicle, while being told it was “equivalent.” It isn’t. No price adjustment was offered. The final bill came to $1,136.78 USD, over $400 more than booked—with charges that don’t resemble the original agreement at all. I was told at pickup that it would be corrected at drop-off. It wasn’t. At drop-off, they refused to provide proper documentation. The inspection just said “All Good”, no signature, no name, no receipt. The agent wouldn’t even identify themselves. The damage deposit is still being held by Avis (not Visa), despite their terms stating it should be released after return with no damage. Instead, they later claimed it takes 15–30 days, contradicting their own agreement. Avis Costa Rica operates as a franchise, so AVIS International has no authority over them and they've become a fraudulent operation consistently scamming tourists, ignoring booking contracts, adding extra erroneous fees, refusing to release the credit card holds, refusing proper documentation, refusing to follow their own terms and agreements that they provide you with and there is zero recourse. Don't get scammed. Book elsewhere, AVIS will be more expensive and far more stressful than elsewhere.

The vehicle was fine, but my $140 reservation ended up being $504 by the time they added all the "mandatory fees". They refused to accept my insurance. It's one thing to have a few taxes or roadside assistance to pay, but the final cost was more than triple what I was quoted!

They said i have to pay the additional fee which includes there own insurance or else they will not release the car . They said my problem was that i bought the insurance from Kayak and not them so if i dont want it i should go on the website and cancel . They already knew that i cant cancel cause it was less than 24 hours . What a scam . very disappointing from Kayak website to advertise and offer their services on your website . Never again

We had cut our trip shorter by four days and the price quoted changed very little. When I questioned this I was told because I HAD to purchase additional insurance on the car we were driving. Also, our flight left before the dealer opened so I was told I had to leave the car at the airport, but not where at the airport. There are no signs or public parking lots around the airport so I drove around asking people where to leave it at 4:00 am in the morning, but no one knew. I finally took it to Payless and parked it in the front and took an Uber back to the airport. It was a real hassle.

There was a minor scratch at the bottom of the front bumper which is not visible unless you are on your knees. As far as I am concerned we didn’t do anything to cause it. It may be already there and we didn’t notice when we took the care at midnight. At any rate my gripe is with how they handled this situation. We bought most expensive coverage possible with them which is twice the rental price itself. But during checkout they stalled us because of this issue even though we told them that we are cutting too close to our departure time and requested them to call the insurance and get it reimbursed because we already bought the coverage. But they insisted on us calling them and we couldn’t because we didn’t have local mobile plan. After lot of back and forth they checked other contracts on the vehicle and probably figured out that the damage was already there and the let us off the hook. It was a happy ending but the whole drama could have been avoided if they had customer service at the forefront of their minds.

The car I hired (a 4x4) was not available on pickup. After a 12 hour flight we were offered a small car or they would takes us back to the airport! Which was no good to us as we were staying 3 hour drive away. We took the small car but it took an hour to process and the sales assistant was rude and unhelpful. We eventually got given the keys to the car but was not told anything. We had to ask what fuel it took. We were given no instructions on the car use etc. Drop off was easier.

I had purchased insurance via Kayak when I booked the car. When I got to Hertze the did not accept the insurance and said I had to purchase their insurance.

Horrible. 1.5hrs waiting time for pickup. Then for return the same line. Actual price including mandatory fees (ofcourse 'mentioned' in the 15 pages small print) 3 times higher than shown price when I made the booking. Worst experience with a car rental ever. Will not rent at Hertz again and definitely not via Kayak

They are hiding the extra insurance charges until you are actually picking up the car and they are forcing you to take their insurance and ripping you off with more than double the rental price. Big scam 😒

Kayak quoted us a price with insurance and once we arrived in country, we were told we needed to pay an additional $300 for insurance as the country did not recognize the insurance Kayak had sold us in the rental contract. Very dissatisfied.

It took 2 hours because the shuttles were full, then traffic was bad for the 2 mile drive to the rental place. Then really misleading pricing- I had to pay an additional $600 total for insurance that should’ve been baked into the price originally. On top of a $2500 deposit (pending). They tried to haggle and negotiate this additional tax price when I got to the rental counter. 2 other families in there were fighting the same issue. Same story when we returned the car- tons of pissed off people forced to pay hundreds more than budgeted because of false marketing. Also the car was a total POS. We had trouble accelerating quickly which was quite dangerous in Costa Rica. Navigation didn’t work so had to hold our phones manually

A total scam - they charge enormous fees for insurance. I brought a copy of my credit card contract and they refused to let me get its coverage. It cost more for the insurance than the actual rental. Avoid these guys and go with someone who is legitimate and honest. I will never rent from them again. Ever!

So the garage tried to charge me a $2500 deductible straight off of my credit card and then I told him that that was not discussed prior to him trying to charge it and I said hey there was a guy at the airport that told me he could do it for $300 deductible and 350 for the week and so then he said OK I can match that point being negotiation is definitely required with This company. Whatever they offer you lowball them and they will probably meet your offer. Hope this helps. I will say the comfortable car and reliable in the mountains. They provided was really good. It was called vGV

Unfortunately not to recommend. The insurance costs are not communicated in advance and are not transparent. We had an issue with the vehicle and and although having a the highest security insurance we did not get an alternate vehicle. The company insisted us of driving 220km without a valid licence plate to bring the vehicle back to the station and wanting us to break the law, making us believe that it would be no problem.

The rental itself was booked for $152; not cheap but acceptable to pay for a good experience… then when at the rental desk, we were met with options of paying an additional nearly $200 mandatory insurance(?!) or “shuttle back to the airport”…! At this point, we felt robbed and backed into a corner of no-winning outcome as we had onward travel plans with the car. Thereafter, it became apparent after 10 mins or so sitting on the passenger seat that it was damp and sure enough the passenger had quite a wet pair of trousers by the end of the journey. Too late to turn around by that point. Additionally, we spent the next two days chasing ants around the seats and dashboard of the car! Very distracting and dangerous driving experience as a result and we had to get the car fumigated in order to use it safely! It obviously wasn’t clean! Customer services did offer to replace the vehicle but the only option presented was a 3 hour round trip drive to the nearest rental office, which couldn’t be accommodated in our existing prepaid tour plan schedules.

You book online, it says total final price but in fact you pay 3x more at the office. The car breaks in the middle of journey (after first week) and you wait for car replacement for 6 hours (with inside baby in the car) while they keep of lying to you that they arrive in 2 hours.

Renter beware. This company will tell you to have repairs made, provide them the receipt, but then they will not refund your money as promised (also had full coverage insurance through the company). The car itself is cheap to rent, but the insurance will get you. Do not recommend, because of their shady practices.

i am surprised that Kayak would recommend a sub par car rental. i took Kayak's referral to be qualified and accountable. i will never take a Kayak referral seriously again. -full sized suv would not fit 4 persons w/luggage -having to change vehicles causing an sizeable $$ upgrade -alternate vehicle was in poor condition with no other viable choice to make -gas in alternate vehicle was "just under half." what does that mean? -constant ball bearing or axle grinding noise -**power steering did not work taking 2 hands to make minimal turns. by the time of drop off, vehicle was unmanageable with potential for an accident. -zero to none accountability by drop off staff. A DISASTER.

It was terrible, they didn't send a shuttle to pick us up from the airport, even after repeated phone calls and assurances they were sending someone. After waiting for over 45 minutes, and having to get a taxi to the rental store location, it was closed... it was 8:30pm but their website clearly stated they were open until 10pm. After finally getting someone to open the gate, they informed me that they didn't have the car available for us and they were unable (unwilling) to work something else out for our group of 10. I DON NOT RECOMMEND THEM AT ALL!

When I booked online, there was an option to select no insurance. I selected this, and then when I show up, they tell me I need to pay 10x the amount that the car rental costs for insurance. I ended up just not getting the car. I would like a full refund.

No one should ever rent from this company. They are fraudulent. They operate on the bait and switch model of offering low rates to rent the car and then DEMANDING 3 times more money for insurance than the car rental rate. Our price to rent a car for 17 days was $307. We brought our proof of insurance and our entire insurance policy with declarations as well as a credit card which provides car rental insurance. EC Rent a Car would not accept this and demanded $960 for car insurance and a $500 deposit on our credit card before we could rent the car. Let that sink in. $307 to rent the car and $960 for insurance, for 17 days. It’s a scam. We met a Canadian couple on the shuttle to the airport with the same complaint. They paid 300% more for the insurance than the actual car rental rate they were quoted. Additionally EC Rent a Car has vehicles in terrible shape. Our car died and had to be towed away on our 2nd day of vacation. We lost an entire day of vacation. They would not compensate us for the loss of use of the vehicle. The replacement vehicle had faulty brake lights making it unsafe. DO NOT EVER RENT A CAR FROM THIS COMPANY. YOU WILL REGRET IT! It’s a SCAM.
