Top tips for hiring a car from Budget in Queenstown

  • Book Budget car hire in Queenstown to make the ultimate leap in taking control of your holiday by exploring the city and surrounding areas on your schedule and not by other means. You'll avoid the high cost of local taxis and the inconsistent scheduling of public transport. You'll be able to visit places like Coronet Peak, Lake Wakatipu, and Milford Sound without worrying about how to get there or how long to stay. You can also take advantage of the freedom of a hire car to take a road trip to places like Arrowtown, less than an hour's drive away.
  • When you choose to book Budget car hire in Queenstown, you'll be picking a reputable company that's a leader in its field throughout the world. Budget offers possibly the largest and most varied fleet in Queenstown at some of the most affordable prices. The company's commitment to providing a stress-free hiring experience through top-quality car hires and unrivalled customer service makes Budget car hire in Queenstown an ideal choice for many.
  • if you're flying into the city, consider booking Budget car hire at Queenstown International Airport to have the perfect start to your holiday. Not only will you avoid the expensive airport transfers and unreliable public transport services, but you'll also be able to get to the city centre the fastest. Once you land, follow the signposts from inside the Baggage Claim area in the main terminal to close to the Belt 1 luggage belt where you'll find car hire counters like Budget. Booking online will help save you time and money since in-person booking at the airport is much more costly.
  • When choosing Queenstown Budget car hire, be aware that the surrounding highways in Queenstown can be treacherous, with winding roads and tight corners. They're especially dangerous during the icy snow-ridden months. It's important to keep your eye out and drive more slowly along these roads than recommended. You can check the local weather apps to be aware of the conditions you'll be driving in to make sure.

FAQs about hiring a car from Budget in Queenstown

  • Which Budget offices should I be using in Queenstown?

There are two well-placed Budget offices available in the city, and the one you choose to use will depend on how you arrive in Queenstown. If you're flying in, Queenstown Airport is the ideal location. It's important to book online to avoid the extra fees you'll pay in person. The second option is located close to the heart of the city, at 68 - 70 Stanley Street. Regardless of whether you book from the airport or the office on Stanley Street, you'll have the choice of the same cars. If one branch doesn't have a vehicle you like, the two branches will organise with each other to get you your vehicle.

Remember to bring your confirmation details and reference number, as well as the same credit card used for your online booking. If the credit card used isn't in your name, the card owner must be present when collecting the vehicle. You'll also need a valid driving license written in English and a valid form of ID, preferably a passport.

  • Where can I park my Budget hire car in Queenstown?

It's typically difficult to find on-street in the city centre, especially free parking. You'll find 10 minutes of free parking at the airport but there isn't much else available in the city. I had a confirmed reservation for a vehicle. The DAY before my trip Budget called me to tell me that they gave away my car and no longer had a vehicle for me. The Budget representative stated that this had happened to several customers. I didn't prepay when I made the reservation so they gave the car away. He offered to move my reservation to a different location. I specifically asked if everything would stay the same with my reservation, and stated to him, "price, date, size of vehicle" and he said "Yes". When I got to Budget they would not honor the reserved price and I had to pay almost $100 extra. HORRIBLE customer service and completely disregarding a confirmed reservation, essentially not honoring their contract.Reviewed Jun 16 2026

Budget doesn't have human beings answer the 800 cust. service no. after 7:30PM! that;s right a national car rental comp, so if you have problems with your car NO ONE TO SPEAK TO. want AI instead? a tow though that is not what you are calling about - those are your choices after 7:30. And, no notice when you rent a Tesla that the charging cord is NOT in the car, but can be found only at the Tesla charge station. How would a renter know that? Not in the Tesla driver's manual, not on the rental receipt, no number to call where someone from Budget can tell you that (and when I did the next day talk at 800 no,. that person didn't have a clue herself. ps - the office staff themselves where helpful and fair.Reviewed Jun 16 2026

Terrible. We got to Budget and although we paid for a convertible they said they didn’t have any. They added hidden fees, including a hidden gas charge and windshield protection charge. They also ignored us when we informed them of a low tire pressure in the front right tire, which later resulted in a flat tire. 0 stars, another scamming car rental company.Reviewed Jun 15 2026

The experience was great. The person at the desk was super friendly. Getting the vehicle was a piece of cake. Everything was quick and the vehicle worked great and was easy to drive. My two complaints would be that the navigation system was atrocious and wouldn't connect to my Android Auto even though it's an option, and the drop off procedure wasn't clear. However, I'd gladly rent from Budget again.Reviewed Jun 15 2026

Lost my credit card prior the hand over and since apple pay is absoloutly no option, the transfer of the booking to the cc of my partner was not acceptef. The only option, as you know, was to make a new booking, tripple the price. Worst experience and won‘t book like this again. fyiReviewed Jun 15 2026

First, the staff at the counter pressured me and intentionally provided misleading information regarding the vehicle insurance. Second, they assigned me a vehicle that did not match the agreed-upon specifications. Although they later exchanged it for another one, they never updated the contract. Consequently, the insurance would not have covered me because it listed a completely different vehicle.Reviewed Jun 15 2026
