Great place to stay on a budget
Super cute rooms with that DDR charm! Everything was clean and neat, and comfortable. Thankfully the rooms are updated enough to have comfortable beds and clean new bathroom fixtures with the DDR accents. I chose the private bathroom, and was pleased to have it. Easy check-in & check-out. Vintage radio worked great! Ideal location 2 min walk to the S-bahn
A bit difficult to maneuver luggage up and down stairs as there is no lift. Would have been nice to have a mini fridge & a fan as the summers are hot! Private bathroom was not en suite, but across the hall. Otherwise no complaint!
Unique, but...
DDR feel. Overall clean.
No toilet in the room, even if you paid for. No or bad WLAN in the room. Didn't liked, that I was asked to pay the bill in advance during the checkin.
Would be nice if it wasn't for the bed bugs!
This place had an interesting retro decor, that lives up to the DDR theme that they are going for. The room was pleasant enough for a Hostel. Generally it initially met the expectations of what I was paying for. The location is good. Fairly close to many things, particularly the Ostbahnhof.
The room smelled like it had been smoked in every day for years, despite the no smoking signs everywhere. I was letting that slide until I found out that my room had bed bugs! I had lots of bites. Upon closer inspection, I found out that the mattress was infested, and I killed a full grown adult as it was crawling around on me. The room had almost all of the things you can look for when hunting for bed bugs infestation. Blood spots from the post-feed, bug parts in the mattress lining, bug dirt in the sheets and mattress crevices. It was all there. I understand that these things happen, even in the nicest hotels, and would not be leaving a scathing review if the situation had been appropriately handled. But in addition to the infested mattress, the staff seemed unconcerned. Which makes me think this is a regular problem, and that there is no protocol for dealing with it. The woman at the desk did not bat an eye at the dead bed bug I showed her. She offered me another room, in a tone that suggested I was being unreasonable. There was no apology, no offer of refund for the two nights I had already been there, no offer to pay for laundry, no offer of plastic bags to quarantine things. They didn't want to come look at the room to see where the bugs were. Those are all bad signs, and I left for another hotel minutes thereafter. I did get refunded for the nights that I would not be staying there, but had already paid for, so at least there is that.
This is an excellent choice for those who are mostly thinking about price and cleanliness, but it is also very well located with regards to public transport (the train station is only a few steps away) and there is a cheap supermarket right by too. And the design is cool and fun. Staff was very friendly too. Highly recommend this place.
It didn't bother me but sound easily travels through the doors. However, there seem to be only 3 rooms in each section so there are really only two other rooms that will be using the same hallway as you.
Great novelty ddr hostel! Staff were very friendly and helpful. Clean rooms, nice bathrooms. Plenty of hot water!
Nothing
It was a great experience stepping back into the East Germany of the 1980s. The room was basic, but met our expectations. It's not for everyone, but if you want to experience what life was like back then, then it's great.
I thought the shared bathroom on our floor was untidy.
I liked the old radio in my room and the helpful staff who provided me a really useful instruction about the city.
NO
Very good location, the decoration of the Hostel is cool with a ddr look. Room is big (mine was a double room).
They didn't keep my receipt and didnt put my payment in the system, if I haven't kept the receipt they would make me pay again. The entrance is not controlled.
location
The Ostel's closeness to Ostbahnhof(rail station) - it was fantastic!
Six floors, no elevator
The staff were very helpful in giving information, stowing our luggage on the last day and spoke English!
Noise! It claims to have sound-proofed rooms. They certainly block the noise from the nearby railway station but the walls are paper-thin. There was drilling early morning twice, loud talking by people with their door open at 2.15 am and a woman shouting into the shower that she had left her ring there.
We were given a single room at the price of a double room (8 square meters). There were no closet, toilet, tv or anything in the room, and it was noisy. There were no common rooms at the hotel and the DDR-design are pseudo. Very low value for money.
