Great location, 4 minutes walking to Amsterdam CS. The hotel is housed in the Scheepvaarthuis building registered as a monument. Nice wellness with all types of saunas, jacuzzi (although very outdated and not particularly the most comfortable). Huge rooms with great high ceilings and large windows. The hotel has done a great job keeping the legacy of the building in the whole bundling.
Staff experience was 50/50. When it comes to cleaners, wellness staff and others they were very helpful and nice folks. On the other hand, receptionists and other executives had a certain attitude. Quite common here though. Wellness front desk staff not present more than actually being there. Multiple people being left to figure out a way to get started... Just some things you don't want to see at such hotel. To find your way around the hotel is like a maze and not much has been done to help guests with directions... For a room of that size, I'd expect more space to hang clothes, without the need to call the front desk for more hangers (and getting different options as you requested). On top of that, the storage space was full of equipment, which I wish could have a more discrete placement within the room, without sacrificing space for hanging clothes. Historical style is great, but would be even nicer without having a coffee-table with squeaking legs. Generally a bit of an empty feel to the room. Although mentioned in the hotel guide that calling a room service would let you know more about the food offered, why not place a menu in the room directly? Instead, there was an offer for pizza, but I imagine asking for different types of food is not too demanding? I don't remember getting a notice about an on-going construction? Otherwise great views were obstructed, so it would be nice to know about it in advance. Generally a nice hotel, but the lack of attention to detail makes me not sure how to feel about the stay.
Overrated property not worth the five star rating or the cost
This hotel is perfectly located in Amsterdam and is exceptionally clean, the staff are really friendly and the breakfast was beautiful. We found the complimentary mini bar a refreshing change from being charged to use the mini bar.
This hotel advertises pregnancy spa treatments. I booked this hotel in Amsterdam specifically because I wanted my partner to have a relaxing spa during our stay (she is 17 weeks pregnant). On attempting to book a pregnancy treatment we were informed by the staff "sorry we cant offer that, we aren't specially trained to do pregnancy massages, we keep telling the management team but they wont stop advertising them, all we could do is a light facial." not really acceptable. They also advertise 24 hour room service which is does but the only food you can order is pizza.
Large rooms. Great location and lovely breakfast. Very helpful staff
The location was very central to all of the sights in Amsterdam. The swimming pool and spa area were very good. The included minibar was good.
The hotel is having building works undertaken at the moment. Our first room had filthy water pouring off of the scaffolding down the windows making it impossible to see outside. Our replacement room had a severe drainage problem in the bathroom which made the whole room smell of rotting cabbages. This was reported but despite a little bleach being poured down one drain the following day the problem persisted. There was no follow up from the staff to see if we were satisfied. The room design was generally poor making it difficult to do makeup, hair etc.
