Windermere Hotel

The Windermere Hotel is one of the oldest in the Lake District, having been built back in 1847 when the railway line between Oxenholme and Windermere opened. Upon closer inspection of the walls, you’ll see that traditional Lakeland slate was used in the construction. Today the hotel is listed as part of English Heritage. The building is also set within a national park.

You can enjoy a scenic 2h National Rail or TransPennine Express train journey from Manchester Airport (MAN) to Windermere Station; from there it’s just a roughly 2min taxi ride to The Windermere Hotel. If you’d like a faster trip, pre-book a private taxi or car with a reputable firm (like Lakeside Taxis) to transport you from Manchester Airport straight to the hotel.

Thanks to its lofty location perched atop a hill, rooms at the hotel have great views. The most popular accommodations are The Lake View Rooms (double or twin) that live up to their name: through the windows, you can see as far as Lake Windermere and Lakeland Fells. Many of these rooms also feature quaint, Victorian decor pieces, such as sash windows and high wooden ceilings.

The Windermere Hotel welcomes both cats and dogs in selected rooms, with a maximum of two pets per room. The hotel will provide your furry friends with complimentary food and water bowls. The gardens surrounding the hotel provide plenty of running space for your dog.

The hotel’s restaurant has been refurbished to provide an even better dining experience. With its large, floor-to-ceiling windows, the restaurant provides meals with a view across the town and out toward the lake. The breakfast buffet is popular among both guests and outside visitors. For dinner, you can expect the talented chefs to serve up traditional English fare, such as steak and kidney pie, with a contemporary twist.

The Windermere Hotel’s small but cosy Orrest Head Bar lounge is open to hotel guests and other Lake District visitors and serves a wide range of wines, ales and spirits, as well as a small selection of snack foods. When it’s cold, you can enjoy your libations inside the lounge near the stone fireplace, or take them outside to the lounge terrace during the warmer months to appreciate the weather and the view.

The Windermere Hotel offers business delegates a boardroom-style meeting space that can accommodate up to 30 persons. It’s sufficiently versatile to be used for any type of conference or business meeting, with a large television screen and separate lounge area with comfortable couches where you can relax with a cup of coffee between sessions.
