They replenish toilet paper after cleaning room, answer front desk when you call, had pamphlets in room about tours restaurants etc
Some of the staff were still trying to provide courteous service despite facing unemployment in a matter of weeks due to impending hotel closure. The hotel is in a good location at the north end of the Virginia Beach boardwalk. It was clear to us that the hotel had once been an elegant and well-appointed place to stay. Sadly, whoever now owns the property now has decided to run it into the ground in the run up to its demolition.
Given that the new owners of the Hotel Cavalier Oceanfront are planning to demolish the building later this summer it was not surprising that the facilities were poor, that the staff were decomitted, and that the decor was looking very tired and worn out. The first room we were given still contained trash from the previous occupants and the beds had yet to be changed. After complaining we were given another room which, although it had been serviced, smelled as if mold was growing inside or near the AC unit. It was so bad that we tried to leave the balcony door and the door to the corridor open for as long as possible each day. We also found that the stairwell (we were on the 4th floor and did not want to wait for the elevator, and didn't fully trust its safety) was littered with trash including discarded McDonald's food. It was interesting that the food after being present on the stairs for several days showed no sign of decomposition, an valuable side-note on the longevity of McDonald's "food" product. It should be noted that the Cavalier Oceanfront is a different building to the original Cavalier hotel built back in the 1920s set back a few more blocks from the seafront. The original Cavalier, which appears from the outside to be a historically interesting and architecturally attractive building, is currently closed for refurbishment and there are posters outside announcing that the hotel will re-open in 2016. I suspect that the refurbished Cavalier will be beyond the price-range of most working and middle class people, but if it is owned by the same company / consortium / individual as the Oceanfront then I truly do not hold out any hope.
