Pros: Room ,location,food
Cons: Nothing
9,7 Excellent
Pros: This is a luxury hotel with a wonderful location right next to Unzen's most famous attraction, its hot water jigoku (hells). It is also a very convenient, short walk from the bus center and tourist info center. The rooms are surprisingly large, especially by Japanese standards, with excellent views and all the amenities. The staff speaks English and is very helpful. The onsen baths are delightful and the food is excellent. What more could you ask for?
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Hotel filled with tradition yet newly renovated.
Cons: The fish in both dinners was mediocre
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Big room,good service
Cons: Too small toilet ,dressing room
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The service was spectacular
Cons: The location was a bit remote
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Hotel management was very understanding of our situation which happened on the day of check in. Thank you. Both dinners exceeded expectations - highlights included abalone one night and lobster the other night. Fantastic, Japanese painting-like scenery from the room. Terrific room setup and very clean. Hotel was fully booked but you don't feel it - enjoyed the privacy. Great lounge areas. They also provide postcards for you to send to family and friends.
Cons: Breakfast on the second day was not as good as the first.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Everything
Cons: nothing
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful hotel with outstanding facilities. Like the Volcanic water bath available in the room and the top floor club with free drinks and massage chairs. Beautiful view at 360 degrees. Rooms are spacious and of high quality design and materials.
Cons: Food is good but outpriced.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Feel so luxury n exclusive once step in the ryokan. Right next to Unzen hell national park with great view from our room n from the rooftop bar. Self service free flow alcohol drinks n juices from the rooftop bar which is enjoyable.
Cons: The duvet a bit too thick for not a winter season, the pyjamas provided can be more comfortable n more fashionable
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Good food Some of the staff members were very polite and friendly (but not all sadly) and the hotel has a pretty special location right on top of Unzen's hell
Cons: At this price point, service could have been a touch better/more flexible. It was already known I had my child with me yet the room did not include a yukata for him - I had to ask for it and turns out they had it. Also, we had just purchased some fine Japanese peaches and the staff weren't willing to have the kitchen cut it for us during the breakfast/dinner (which were both meals included already in our rate). In both above examples, I have been to enough higher-end ryokans which would have gladly taken care of these properly. There are no public onsens at all, good ryokans often have very nice ones. The private onsen in our own room didn't have what I consider good enough privacy standards as there is a public path nearby that people can look into the room from

9,6 Excellent
Pros: Location of Onsen Resort and fabulous food in traditional style
Cons: Room was to be a corner family room with views to both the garden/mountain with a balcony. Still the space was fantastic but not the view that we thought we booked for the price
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Convenient location to enjoy the thermal springs and little township where there were shops. Thoughtful staff who were very eager to please. Short driving distance to ropeway.
Cons: Breakfast and formal dinners were rushed. The courses were presented with insufficient explanation of ingredients. We were overwhelmed and lost as to which items we were to eat first. Maybe staff was eager to get his job over and done with. Maybe it was winter. . There werent much fruits on the menu.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: The place is very quiet with the scenic spot just next to the hotel. My room got upgraded to the upper floor. It is fantastic. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The service was really good. The private onsen could be booked without charge. It is really nice.

Pros: Very close to Unzen Hells, there is a walking trail to Unzen Hells that starts right at the hotel. Most restaurants are located 10min walk away from the hotel.
Cons: We had a room selected at check-in on the ground floor. The room furnishings were fairly old and dated, though still clean. Not much luggage space for 4 people to a room.

6,3 Good
Pros: Nice onsen. Pretty old, needs a refurbish. Food was ok. We stayed one night for that it was ok.
Cons: Altogether pretty expensive for what you get.
8,3 Excellent
Pros: It is near bus stop, just 30sec walking to the hotel. Staff are nice and friendly and speak multi languages. It has private rooms for dinner and foods are excellent.
Cons: Rooms are little bit gloomy and air-con didn’t work well.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The public onsens, especially the outdoor ones were a dream. Definitely try both. The dinner and breakfast was a feast, and the staff were very welcoming - as a memento they gave us a framed photo they took of us at dinner as a honeymoon gift, very sweet.
Cons: The bathroom was a bit dark and run down, but we washed in the public baths so it didn’t matter (we stayed in the old wing).

Pros: Great location - 1 minute walk from bus station. Staffs are very nice. An old man greeted us with little English but was very helpful - trying to explain Unzen area map and calling the bus station to book a shared taxi to Nita Pass for us. When we're about to leave for the bus station, he ran following us to give another useful map and made sure we understood the word 'Nita Pass' in Japanese writing. Very impressive!! Onsen experience at the hotel was great. There are both indoor and outdoor onsen with full facilities.
Cons: Nothing I don't like. Just one recommendation - please put an English instruction to use heater/air-conditioning.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: The location is good. Onsen condition is nice.
Cons: Nil
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Very good location and nice onsen! Good view.
Cons: Nothing much!
9,0 Excellent
Pros: After checked in to the hotel, we were surprise by knowing that the hotel had been established more than 300 years, even the previous Japanese Emperor been visiting the hotel. We reserved the private on-sen (open air) with fees and enjoyed the night view while soaping inside the hot water. Unzen is one of the famous on-sen city in Japan. Some people might not like the smell of the on-sen due to rich of sulfor mineral.
7,0 Good
Pros: Parking space, smiling staffs
Cons: Quite thin and hard bed (futon) as well as low thread bed sheet resulting in uncomfortable sleeping
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff, good location, high comfort, big and clean facilities - enough said. :)
Cons: Just a very small thing, that the room heater was set too high. Had to switch it on and off intermittently by hand. Would suggest that it be turned on to warm up the room before going to sleep and then turning it off for the night. The provided quilt is more then sufficient for winter.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: We enjoy the onsen and is big and well facilitated.
Cons: The room is a bit old.
7,9 Good
Pros: We slept incredibly well.
Cons: The man at the front desk told us the wrong time for the bus and caused a 3 hour delay. Obviously not intentional but a little annoying.

5,0 Okay
Pros: spa view
Cons: Room wallpaper
7,1 Good
Pros: Staffs were great. Breakfast and dinner great too. Onsen was good too.
Cons: The room. Don’t ever let the Hotel put you in a western room nos. 315 or 316. Always insist on a tatami room. These are very small rooms sandwiched in the back of the hotel. See pictures.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: This hotel has a lake view and onsen. The onsen was luxurious and the lake view was amazing. The staff was absolutely wonderful. They were so accommodating. I arrived two hours before check-in, but they gave me tea while they quickly prepared my room. I spoke to them mostly in Japanese since I knew a little, but they were kind when I didn't understand, and translated words for me. They even translated a bus schedule into English so I would be able to read it. The meals I ate there were amazing delicious experiences. (Make sure you pre-arrange meals ahead of time.) They even offered a loaner umbrella when it was raining, and told me to just leave it at the bus stop and they would come pick it up. The staff went above and beyond my expectations, and it made my stay very enjoyable.
Cons: My only suggestion to travelers is: some of the cheaper rooms don't have a lake view, so if that's important to you, double check that before you book.
5,8 Okay
Pros: Breakfast was ok.
Cons: Extremely difficult to communicate with the team. Spent a lot of time trying to get information and getting help from team. We were very upset when we could not get effective help when we told them we lost our money. The hotel really lacked security. 1. There was no security for the lady's onsen and anyone could access the onsen from the elevator. 2. The glass door leading to the garden and beach was kept open throughout and anyone can access this door. 3. Luke warm water in vacuum flask provided in room so we could not make tea. Thus, requested for change of hot water. The staff accessed our room to replace a new pot of hot water into room when we were not in the room.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The room, although not spacious, was clean and comfortable with everything we needed which included a small fridge, hot water for tea and a large bathroom. The onsen too was very large with lovely views over the lake and beyond.
7,5 Good
Pros: Nice hotel. The room is regular. Nothing too special- two beds, bathroom which is quite spacious relative to japanese hotels.
Cons: No tea bags and coffee in the room. Only macha. Smell of the kitchen next to the room.

6,7 Good
Pros: I liked their kindness for serving non-seafood breakfast. They also have colourful & lovelier yukata(s) for ladies only. Otherwise, staffs are extremely kind and welcoming for quests.
Cons: Bathroom in the room is extremely old and small. I just couldn’t feel like taking a shower or bath in the room. Additionally, electrical plugs are not enough or visible in the room.

7,2 Good (444 reviews)
2,9 Mediocre
Cons: Toilet and bathtub super old and look very crappy.. see photo... Do u dare enter?
6,0 Good
Pros: Very close from bus terminal, 1-2 minutes walking. Great view from the room, especially at night.
Cons: Hotel was old for this price. Price/quality rate can be better. Total price for staying was higher than showed on booking. Staff speak Japanese, however if they know that you are foreigner, they talk to you in non-polite Japanese, but more rude.
8,3 Excellent
Pros: The room looked stylish with a tatami floor and large windows with a view of the hells. It was our only room on this trip to have a large low table and sofa for drinking tea. A teapot, green tea and sweets were in the room. The location is great, just around the corner from the bus stop and on a street with wonderful small restaurants. We were given from the hotel a beautiful fruit platter for staying three nights.
Cons: I found a hair on my pillow and on the freely provided pyjamas, the bedsheet was stained. There was a small step from the bed into the room that was easy to miss and fall. We opted for a Western room and perhaps because the staff did not wish to enter it wasn't cleaned or the bed made up for the three nights. Fresh tea and towels were left outside.
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Can't beat the location!! Right by the buses and the hell hot springs. Mainly convenient. Onsen where vere decent: they switch the two between men and women every day, which makes it fair since one is better than the other - I recommend trying both.
Cons: The extra step to the bed, though I understand historically, was easy to miss...
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Centrally located with an excellent onsen with large outdoor pool. Very modern room, recently refurbished with a good view of the resort.
Cons: Exterior of the building is worse for wear.
7,5 Good
Pros: Good location right on the main road in Unzen Onsen. Very close to the visitor's center where you can pick up a shared taxi to the ropeway. Beautiful room with a great view over the hills, steaming vents, forests, and lakes.
Cons: Price is a bit high for the room. Also thought the breakfast price was quite high at 1500 JPY. Rattling hallway windows during a wind storm made it difficult to sleep on our last night. English was not really spoken which was an issue a couple of times.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Traditional Japanese room with tatamimats, easy to get to Nita Pass.
