I loved this resort. The food was excellent. The beach is amazing. The staff were friendly and helpful. The pools are clean and well maintained. The grounds are beautiful, with waterfalls and giant trees and lovely walking paths. I highly recommend staying there.
The location & setting is great. The staff we're great (tip the bartenders and cleaning staff for even better service ! ) Our shower was always hot (would have liked a colder water option actually). The food selection was great as well. Beach side waiter service would be an improvement for sure.

Cons:Cheap 2 star food service. If you don't ask for it you won't get it. This was my fifth visit to the Reef. Every year the overall food service has gotten progressively worse especially in the Italian Restaurant. Four years ago that restaurant had an excellent antipasto salad bar now it has the same salad bar as the main restaurant. The entrees youst to be very good to excellent and the house wine and champagne were surprisingly good, no more. We never went back to that restaurant after the first try, nothing special. The hamburgers at the snack bar are mixed with a filler that does not taste good. I couldn't eat it. The food in the main restaurant varies little from day to day. They use the cheapest meat available but prepare them well and in a tasty manner. Beef is rare but if you ask for it they will get you a steak. Years ago the Italian restaurant was NYC quality, the main restaurant had fresh squeezed orange juice for breakfast, champagne flowed all day, now you have to pay for it after 11 AM and the overall food service was much better. I have to admit I found something I like to eat at every meal and they served steaks after I asked for them. Our bathtub needed replacement, it was cracked on the bottom. Our TV was broken as well.
Pros:the only good thing was the ice cream parlor and it's location was amazing so close to 5th Avenida! We walked to the little town of playa del Carmen and all it's shops!!
Cons:The beach is always dirty with sea weeds, the food is horrible the staff are not attentive not greetifull. Bartenders are horrible and drinks suck! If you want to go and have diarrhea and vomiting for two days with you and your children all together go to this place! We were 9 In our party and 8 of us got sick!! And I heard from other quests that people in There party got sick also!! The restaurant is outdoor it's hot and humid and food is not kept at a good temperature so any dairy product or meat will be prone to bacteria very quickly. They do not have enough ice and do not keep food fresh! If they use beans tonight for dinner the left over is served for breakfast! It's so disgusting!! Would never stay at the reef playacar again! So many Mosquitos!!! Be prepared to get bitten and get food poising beach is terrible!!
Pros:Terrible: On the worst Experience EVER, Since we walked in and we checked in they asked for our passports Really!! The we get to the room that smelled HORRIBLE the lights did not work and latch was missing, The Beds where so hard, I think the floor was Better all the servers where so rude. NO ACTIVITY at the pool area the pools where so small plus if you needed to pay extra if you wanted a different beer and then to get a coffee at the lobby was 3 bucks really what part of all inclusive was I missing. I hated this Hotel it was the WORST EVER NEVER AGAIN. We also got food poison, and other people staying here at the REEF also got food poison. The food is not kept at the right temperatures and the service was HORRIBLE you would ask for your Drinks they either took forever or they would not come at all. At the food stations the cooks where always in a BAD MOOD. There beach was super dirty this was the only hotel that did not clean the sea weed. JUST THE WORST HOTEL EVER
Pros:My first time in Mexico and at an all inclusive. I really enjoyed the area and the feel of the resort. The separate restaurants had nice dinners and the buffet breakfast lunch and dinner was pretty good. The beach and the pool were very nice and the resort was located close enough to the downtown area that you could walk or take a cab for next to nothing. I would come back and would recommend this place to others.
Cons:Our check in had some confusion based in the american websites that we had read and what actually was the case regarding her son and kid staying free. However they were pretty sympathetic and work out a very reasonable deal with her. They have some guys not he beach that r selling excursions and asking for money to hold your place that don't work for the resort and if you didn't know better then you think it's ok. They are a scam and they will take your money and refund you if you decide not to go. Beware or them!!
Pros:Beach is impeccable - best beach in playa. Pool area was beautiful. Got a great deal via kayak $125 incl tax per night all inclusive for two. Alcoholic beverages included and paddleboard free for 30 min. Located in gated community so beach was a bit exclusive - no one hassling you/ begging for money.
Cons:Menu variety very generic, bad attempt at American dishes. We didn't even understand why. Food quality subpar - fruits weren't sweet, ceviche poorly done. Dinner was OK. Hotel would not allow me (parents staying at hotel) to access property without a playacar membership card (hotel is located on golf course/ in gated community) had the card thanks to my Airbnb host but was not allowed after 6pm to watch sunset with parents to celebrate their anniversary.
Pros:Nothing - The place was completely mediocre. The only good thing is that it is a beachfront hotel.
Cons:The check in procedure was a nightmare. I flew in from spain and had done the reservation the night before. Upon arrival, they tell me that the reservation is not in the system because the person who takes care of reservations is on a holiday until tuesday! The man tells me that he'll put me in a provisional room. We walk there ( mind you Im carrying my whole kitesurfing equipment with me ) and as the bellman opens the door, we notice the room is occupied. So then we had to go back and I was put in another room for the night and then had to transfer the following day. My check out date was on Friday and I needed an extension until Sunday - I contact the lobby and they tell me they have no availability. While I was booking my room elsewhere I decided to look at their webpage and they did in fact have rooms available. Completely unprofessional people. Yes this is an all inclusive too, but the food is terrible. Breakfast and dinner tastes exactly the same.
