Pros: Everything was great about this hostel : great staff, perfectly clean, right next to the station. the private room was like in a hotel. Big bonus for the common areas : a fully equipped kitchen, delicious free tea, and the owner actually lights a woodfire so it’s super cosy.
Cons: Nothing bad to say.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: Very cosy, with welcoming staff
Cons: Quite expensive
10,0 Excellent
Pros: the place feels very warm: we stayed there in winter and have used the kitchen and dining space quite a lot. The kitchen is very well equipped, the dining space is quite relaxing, there is a fireplace to keep you warm. While we rented a car to get there (free parking on premise), it's also possible to travel by public transport: the hotel is walking distance from the station and there are buses to go to Mount Aso.
Cons: note that the check in time is 4pm and before that there would not be anyone to open the door
10,0 Excellent
Pros: This is the best backpacker I have ever seen. Extremely organized, clean, cozy and comfortable. The design is customer focus. Great location, just close to the bus and train station. Will surely come back and stay for few more days. Unfortunately, I could only book one night during Dec, 2019 due to their renovations.
Cons: Nothing dislike
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Very cozy. The host is very nice and gives useful tips for successful adventure (in a good English). Very close to the railroad station/bus stop. Comfy warm sleep.
Cons: The only possible problem is the reception opening times.

9,2 Excellent
Pros: The service was fantastic, very polite and everyone always have a smiling face. Ryokan has traditional character, is comfy and the private onsen had a very nice setting. Food was delicious.
Cons: A little bit further away from town centre than expected, so difficult to do the bar hopping.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: We booked a maisonette and enjoyed a relaxing and luxurious space with the big sleeping area atop and the indoor and outdoor baths on the ground level. There is also a massage chair and tv in the change area. The outdoor bath, Mori no Yu with a standing bath was unique. The meals were very nice and we had our first taste of horse sashimi. Sadly, it tasted good. The staff were very nice and warm and the owner’s son personally advised us on the outdoor Onsens to visit for Onsen Hopping. The recommendations were good and the free bus service information he wrote on the map helped a lot. Overall, we had a memorable time in Kurokawa.
Cons: Nil
7,9 Good
Pros: Stayed in a room with attached private onsen which was great ! Wonderful service. Very attentive. Special thanks to Momoyo. Dinner and breakfast was good
Cons: Onsen that’s open to public is a bit old and rundown. Good thing we had our own private onsen

He helped store our luggage after check out. Self-help kitchen available. Nice rooftop. Clean shower room. Fun decoration.
Cons: It would be an unrest night when someone snores a lot at night time/ turn on the light when everybody is sleeping (but one can pick single room to avoid this)

5,0 Okay
Pros: The surrounding should be quite nice but we only stayed one night so didnt have much time to explore.
Cons: The private bath attached to our room was quite dirty. I could see the dirts and grime on the floor, side of the bath, on the bottles of the shampoo, hair conditioner and bathing body. Water was too hot as well. Definitely more than 40 degrees. We were not given the correct sizes of yukata for the mother and children. While having our Kaiseki, there was a group of family near our table who was talking quite loudly and they disturbed our dinner.

8,3 Excellent
Pros: The staff were very kind and welcoming and the baths divine, both the private and outdoor public ones. The ryokan itself is very beautiful and atmospheric. The spectacular Japanese breakfast more than made up for missing dinner.
Cons: It was more difficult to get to the ryokan than we had anticipated but that was because we had been told we could get a train there. So we were a bit stressed when we got there. Because of the language barrier we hadn't pre-ordered a meal and the village did not have a great selection of restaurants.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Staff was very supportive and some of them spoke English well. The breakfast was very good and the outdoor onsen was very special. The build and room had the very traditional old Japanese building style. We found at 10 min walk a e-bicycle rental near Hanaasobi Rose Garden.
Cons: We travelled without a car, had not booked dinner in the hotel and were faced with almost all restaurants nearby closed in the evening (late October).
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Almost everything about the ryokan: the wooden house, lovely garden, the atmosphere, the outdoor onsen, professionalism of the people, the fire place, cleanless, quietness. And the coffee is really good, and they have nice refreshing drinks. We loved the breakfast, and the course meal was surprising, impressive for the eyes and absolutely delicious as we didn't know what to expect at all.
Cons: n.a.

Pros: Room was comfortable for the four of us. Owner make the effort of warming up the room for us. Breakfast was superb. The owner only serve the soup & rice when we are seated at the dining table to ensure it’s warm. He also specially prepared ramen for my son, not just instant noodles. Lots of care & thoughtfulness. We had a great stay. Facilities were simple but we felt very comfortable. Great for family or group of friends. Will definitely come back again if we visit Kumamoto.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: The hotel is suitable for family who travel with kids. The owner is kind enough to give us the Japanese style room at the ground floor. Room size is good and clean. The nearest subway is within 10 minutes walking distance from the hotel and only took few stations to reach Kumamoto shopping area and the famous Castle. We not able to visit the Kumamoto Castle as it still under renovation. Before continue our journey to catch the ferry to Shimabara, we had our breakfast at the hotel which cooked by the owner, the food was good!

9,2 Excellent
Pros: Clean property.
Cons: Paid parking. Should provide free parking for guests.
7,1 Good
Pros: It has the basic amenities you would expect of the hotel. Love the Kumamoto decor in the lobby :) Location was pretty good. It was near shopping street with lots of eateries and drug stores, bookstores, small boutiques, free museums, convenient stores etc. Sakura-machi bus terminal was nearby so it’s convenient to travel by bus from airport or Fukuoka, and go to other places such as Aso. Cleaning service was really flexible as we mostly head out around noon where they started cleaning other rooms first. They always clean up the room by the time we are back. The staff were very nice and friendly. They know English too. The cleaning staff were helpful when our door couldn’t shut and helped us contact the receptionist to fix it. Check-in was fast. Size of room was alright and can fit 2 adults and 2 kids and 2 luggage. The hotel was easily seen from the entrance of Sakura machi mall. Easy to reach by foot, very accessible!
Cons: The air-condition cold function wasn’t working as they are going through some upgrading work. I wish we were informed prior, as this was the only thing that bothered us... the room was stuffy and stale even though it is winter time. I Guess a fan would have helped but we were not offered this option. When we asked the staff to help resolve the issue, we were told to off the heater and open the window to let the cold air into the room. The window opens a little due to a safety feature so not much wind was able to help ventilate the room. We are a family of 4 so it was quite stuffy. We kept our main door open until the moment we wanted to sleep and it was the only thing that helped. Our kids couldn’t sleep well every night and they cried many times at night (sorry neighbouring guests). Nothing else bothered us other than the AC. It was scheduled to be completed after March 2020 so if you are coming after that, it may not pose any issues.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: The Kuma Bear room was very cute, probably one of the reasons we chose the hotel. Location-wise, it is about a 5-min walk to the Shinshigai Shotengai.
Cons: The doors to the rooms could not open very wide, so it wasn't very comfortable to walk through, especially with luggage.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Close to shopping street (walking distance). Comfortable bed. Clean. Parking site is right next to the hotel.
Cons: Paid parking.

Cons: Bathrooms needed a major upgrade and room was super tight. Concierge gave a terrible recommendation for an izakaya - food was sub par and a lot of smoking - at least it was cheap and close.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: We had a wonderful suite at the 9th floor, perfect in every single detail. The furniture and decoration were so beautiful, felt like a real apartment. View on the castle The staff was very helpful and kind Engineerimg-wise, unique parking system
Cons: The restaurant at the ground floor was not so special (we had both dinner and breakfast)

7,9 Good
Pros: Comfortable and just right next to the train station. Breakfast was decent - good spread, ok quality
Cons: Room quite small for 3 but at least they provided 2 luggage racks which was quite thoughtful. Hotel building doesn’t quite standout though - no name on the building itself. A rather non-descript building. Spent a while locating it but once you know what it looks like then you’ll be fine
9,0 Excellent
Pros: Breakfast at 1500yen. But there are many choices at Kumamoto station.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The twin room was really spacious and well furnished. The location, breakfast and staff were impressive. Just next to Kumamoto Station and the bus terminals and a tram stop are adjacent to it. The spread at breakfast was very satisfying and staff were helpful and patient.
Cons: May be a gym would add value to the hotel.
