Set between the heath and the Elbe, the Best Western Premier Castanea Resort Hotel, Luneburg, Germany, is a relaxing resort with a golf course, a large spa and wellness area, free Wi-Fi, a ballroom, a congress centre, seminar rooms, and a gastronomic boulevard of restaurants and bars, a short drive from the gates of Hamburg. Open heathland stretches to the west and the Elbe meadows to the east, with the old town of Luneburg and the city of Hamburg within easy reach. A quiet countryside surrounds the resort. Luneburg is a thousand-year-old salt town of crooked gabled houses, trendy restaurants and red-brick merchant fronts, grown wealthy long ago on the salt trade. Just beyond it stretches the Luneburg Heath, the largest connected heathland in Central Europe, which turns a sea of purple when the heather blooms in late summer, grazed by hardy Heidschnucke sheep and crossed by walking and cycling trails. Horse-drawn carriages still roll through villages of thatched cottages nearby.
