Just beyond it stretches the Luneburg Heath, the largest connected heathland in Central Europe, which turns a sea of purple when the heather blooms in late summer, grazed by hardy Heidschnucke sheep and crossed by walking and cycling trails. Horse-drawn carriages still roll through villages of thatched cottages nearby.
