Pros: Very friendly and helpful staff. Dinner was superb and the waitress, despite very little English spoken, offered fantastic service. Receptionists too were extremely helpful to show us the direction to get to sightseeing spots.
5,0 Okay
Cons: The garden was lovely.
7,0 Good
Pros: The large clean characterful room. The large indoor and outdoor Onsen. The buffet breakfast was excellent. The shuttle service to/from the station was very handy, given the station is far from the town.
Cons: There was a lingering smell, possible food (crab) throughout the corridors on my floor and the room. The room was next to some large external water pumps/vents that made a lot of noise and so the the position of the room and the outside noise wasn't the best.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Everything is OK
Cons: Some dinning staffs are not friendly
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Excellent butler services, started with choices of food for the dinner/breakfast, to timing arrangement/reminder, to taxi services..... You can feel all the details are being taken good care. I left a vast jacket in the room and realized it after arriving Tokyo. I phoned the hotel and the staff was very helpful, and immediately arranged the courier to be sent to my next stop. Thanks a lot!

10,0 Excellent
Pros: The staff were all very friendly and helpful! Responding to our inquiries and speedy check in and check out. Room was very spacious complete with all the room amenities and the outdoor bath was really nice. Love the massage chair in the room especially after a nice soak in the hot bath! The lady at the souvenir store was a real legend, she is 68 years old but still looking young and beautiful, spoke pretty good English and introduced us to all the local delights while we shop waiting for the 9pm drum performance in the Hotel. Overall an excellent place for family!
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Fifth onsen in Japan over past several trips. Onsen facility is the largest and best. Building is a bit aged. Food dinner is fantastic, breakfast could be better. Staffs are helpful and friendly.
Cons: Room facilities could be better and breakfast can improve. Location is a bit remote not easy to find supermarkets.

Cons: Can't think of.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: The location is just at Kakusenkei Gorge, good for the view and a walk for the beautiful surroundings around.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: This is a classic ryokan experience, rooms with tatami flooring, sitting area with balcony overlooking the river below, sliding shoji doors. The hotel is built on the cliffs, so all rooms have a view of the valley and river. We also took part in the kaiseki dinner, and I found the stay a real bargain with half-board included -- dinner was not the most elaborate I've had in Japan, but I quite liked the buffet breakfast with plentiful of options. Room was spacious and comfortable; futon used was extra thick (plus an additional padding), so sleep was perfect. The hotel is obviously aging, but still feels grand with its design and choice of materials. Typical for a ryokan, the onsen facilities are small and comprised of just a large indoor bath, sauna, and outdoor rotenburo -- but they overlook the valley, forest, and river below, and the sound of running water (plus the soundtrack of shamisen music) really adds to the atmosphere -- there was even free sake and umeshu offered in the rotenburo (but only in the evening hours). Free massage chairs are available in the relaxation area just outside the onsen. An abundance of activities are provided in the hotel, including karaoke room (free during the day, but reservation required at night), ping pong, game room with video games/comic books/claw machines. If you get bored, the main stretch of town with the public bath and cute shops are just a few blocks away. The ryokan does offer free shuttle pickup and dropoff from Kagaonsen station, but you need to reserve a day in advance (since the shuttle is shared among multiple properties). I found all staff quite courteous, which is the norm for Japan.
Cons: Only small hand towels are provided in the onsen (so you have to carry the large bath towel from your room and back, which I found somewhat strange). Staff speaks limited English. We were not escorted to the room with tea freshly made for us on arrival, which is typically the format while staying in a ryokan in Japan.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Staff where lovely all through my stay. Although a big hotel it felt intimate and the traditional room was such a treat! They also provide free pick up to and from the JR station and gave me great advice on things to do!
Cons: Nothing
10,0 Excellent
