Top tips for hiring a car at Hobart airport

  • To explore the vast area of Hobart and its epic scenery of hills we recommend opting for a hire car. There are several reliable and competitive options for car hire at Hobart Airport. All of them are conveniently situated in the Arrivals terminal and have entry and exit access via Loop Road and Long street. The airport main exit and entrance will connect you to a dual-way highway that takes you directly to the city of Hobart within 20min.
  • If you want to ensure a stress-free driving experience don't hesitate to get a GPS device when booking your hire car with KAYAK as an additional gadgets option. The signal is very good throughout Hobart so you can rely on being connected and smooth sailing on the well-maintained roads.
  • Be sure to check with your hire car agent representative when collecting your vehicle if you are allowed to take the vehicle off-road. Most rental agents do allow it with the addition of insurance coverage, and some car categories such as 4x4 and larger SUVs have automatic driving programs loaded in the vehicles to facilitate off-road driving.
  • Remember that it is mandatory to wear a seat belt whenever driving in a vehicle in Australia whether you are in the front or the back of the car. If you do not adhere to this rule you could face a fine, which will be charged directly to the credit card associated with your Hobart Airport car hire vehicle.
  • Book your car hire at Hobart airport at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

FAQs about hiring a car at Hobart airport

  • What do I need to bring to the counter when collecting my car hire at Hobart Airport?

The actual driver of the car needs to be present in person at the collection of the vehicle. This driver needs to present a current valid driver’s license. If you are an international driver you need to present an International Driver’s Permit or your homeland current valid driver’s license in English. You also need to have either a main brand credit card or a debit card with you. Payments happen upfront before taking your vehicle.

  • Can I cross into another state with my car hire at Hobart Airport?

You are not permitted to travel interstate in a vehicle obtained from this airport unless the trip has been pre-approved by the rental agent who must provide you with written confirmation before the start of your rental agreement. A situation like this is only possible through booking your hire vehicle online in advance.

  • I am travelling with small children, what should I do?

When you pick the best car for you on the KAYAK website, make sure you request the addition of a baby seat or child booster chair as an extra. Don't leave this till you collect the car from the airport as you might find they don't have any available ones at that time. This optional extra is chargeable at a daily rate depending on the agency. They will not fit it for you at the airport, as you are meant to fit it yourself for insurance purposes. Make the process smoother by finding out what type of child seat it is and doing some installation research before the trip, although they are generally pretty easy to secure.

  • My plans have changed can I return my Hobart Airport car hire vehicle early?

Not a problem! Be sure to let the agency know. Then drive to the designated drop-off parking lot at the airport and park the car in the marked area for that particular agent. A representative will come to do a walk-through of the vehicle, collect the keys and log the mileage. Please keep in mind that no deductions to your charges will pass because the car was returned early. You will be charged for your original booking period.

  • Which car hire companies will pick you up at Hobart airport?

Car hire companies that offer shuttle or pick-up services from Hobart airport to off-airport locations include Alamo, Avis, Bargain Car Rentals, Budget, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Europcar, Hertz, keddy by Europcar, National, and Sixt.

We had very wonderful experience with Avis in Tasmania especially staffs were very friendly and helpful. Dipa helped us out getting our car very simple and she also gave us some guidance on which places to visit in Tasmania. We did not had any issues with the car and very convenient to pick up and drop off the car at the airport. So, Thank you Dipa and other staffs for your excellent service. 😊😊

Great price and quality car. The pickup was a little confusing, as the supplied instructions were to call Apex to arrange transfer to pickup point, but no-one answered the phone, and the system was not working. We just saw the Apex transfer bus at the airport pull up and hopped on randomly. With the Apex depot off site, the car drop-off had to be done before 5pm, which was inconvenient for us, as we had a late night flight. It would have been good to have an extra cost option to be able to leave the car/keys somewhere else for after hours drop-off, but unfortunately this was not an option. But the hire car was good quality, well priced and the staff were great once we found how to get to the depot.

Kayak misleadingly shows this as “in terminal” when in fact it’s a shuttle ride away. The shuttle does not run very often. And they don’t have cars ready (we were told when we arrived that it would be at least an hour because they were waiting on another rental company to send them cars). Sketchy! Avoid!
