Rooms are very comfortable and a good size. The decor of the Hotel is distinctive. Breakfast was very nice. 5 mins walk from railway station.
Unfortunately my stay at the ARCOTEL was VERY expensive indeed. This hotel is in a very dodgy area of Hamburg, which I did not realise when I booked it. I was a solo female traveller. I travel a lot for business so this situation is not unfamiliar to me but I had to keep my wits about me all the time which is more than usual. To minimise the risk in case I was robbed on the street I left spare cash and spare cards in the room safe. Unfortunately this was my mistake. The rooms in this hotel have indicators when the room is occupied on the outside of the door (when you key card is inserted). This also tells people when you are out. I also requested no room servicing to support the environment (save the bees initiative) so I should have been the only person in my room. When I was preparing to check out I emptied the safe and found that $500 cash had been stolen. The hotel staff were shocked but no help. They would not investigate who had been in my room. Clearly someone had to have a key and master for the safe. I went to the police who were amazing and came immediately to investigate and this is when I found out that they call it crime corner with lots of gangs, drugs and prostitution. They told me this kind of theft is not uncommon. As an experienced traveller who took good precautions, I would recommend being very careful about staying at this hotel particularly if you are alone. I was clearly targeted which is alarming. I was shocked that this could be possible in what seemed like a very respectable hotel.
The price for a suite was good.
We had to change rooms as the first smelt of cigarette smoke despite being a no smoking hotel. Although we were moved there was no apology for the inconvenience. Also despite a room for three people, we only had coffee cups and two of each of teabags, coffee, etc. A little more consideration would have been welcomed.
Everything was clean
No warm water in the morning, no towels plavailable in the bathroom.
Great location. Had read a few reviews of people saying the area was a bit rough around the edges, but we thought it was quite charming and always felt safe. There is a square not too far away (Hansenbrunnen) which is apparently best avoided at night, but there is no real need to head in that direction and there are great bars and restaurants on Lange Reihe. Room was spacious and quiet. Staff were excellent, helping out when one of us suffered an injury and needed ice.
The toiletries are a bit basic, one bottle for shampoo and body wash attached to the wall unlike in some of the photos, so we wish we'd brought our own.
