8,3 Excellent
Pros: Rooms were very spacious and clean, in a very quiet area of Franz Josef. We really loved the cosy throw blanket on the chairs. Staff were also very friendly and helpful.
Cons: The door to the rooms are large sliding doors, so you can feel a bit exposed as people start making their way to the cars in the morning. We were also a little underwhelmed with the “fireplace” but it didn’t affect our stay!

Pros: We loved everything about our stay at Holly Homestead B&B--the beautiful restored old building, luxurious room, delicious communal breakfast with fellow travelers--but most of all we appreciated the welcoming embrace we got from our hosts Bernie and Gerard. A truly outstanding place.

Pros: Great room, great hosts.

Cons: The only criticism I have is that the WiFi was poor. They should consider investing in a mesh WiFi system to ensure fast, comprehensive coverage.

Cons: Noise from the nearby bar travelled at night somewhat
10,0 Excellent

8,8 Excellent
Pros: We loved our beautiful room. We stayed in the main house and had a gorgeous view of the glacier from our room. The bathroom (with heated floors!) was luxurious and the room was well-designed. The hotel itself had great amenities like a billiards room, a guest lounge (with stunning views), board games, puzzles, a library and DVD library. Breakfast was lovely and Kaz went out of her way to make sure guests were comfortable and well-cared for. We really enjoyed our stay here. When deciding on a place in Franz Josef, we wanted something that felt personal, had character and was 'mountainy' in tone and Westwood delivered.
Cons: As it's a two minute drive into town, it was a 15 minute walk. This wasn't taxing and the road is well-lit at night. It was only slightly inconvenient. However, we thought the hotel's design and size of the rooms made up for this.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Kaz was awesome. Location was very ideal. Great view of Franz Josef. Very quiet. Just a very comfortable Place
Cons: Nothing
8,8 Excellent
Pros: We just stayed overnight, and loved the comfortable big bed, and the resident dogs! Kaz was very welcoming and informative and cooked a tasty breakfast (Eggs Benedict and a 'Kiwi breakfast'. Our Coach room was also spacious.
7,9 Good
Pros: Choice it for the view, unfortunately it was raining
Cons: Thought that it was over priced for what in reality was a motel with communal lounge
9,0 Excellent
Pros: The lodge is a couple of minutes out of town, which made for a very peaceful stay. The views from the main lodge guest area, as well as from our room were superb. (View towards Frans Josef glacier) The rooms are a great size, large bathrooms, a couch to watch TV's / movies as well as a small desk if you were working. The rooms are a lovely timber and were spotless. Caz & Leslie were lovely hosts, and we enjoyed the company of the two dogs Benson and ???
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Warm and cozy. Chalet style. Nice view. DVD you can borrow to watch in your room
Cons: We can hear the sound from the road when staying on the balcony. But not to load
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Westwood Lodge has a real home away from home few about it. I couldn’t have been happier there, Kaz was a fantastic host!

Pros: Great compact room with everything you could possibly need. The space was utilised very well with a little well equipped compact kitchenette- great for heating noodles and making breakfast. The staff were super friendly too.
Cons: Looking out the window at the car blocked the ability to see the mountains. The bed was a bit soft and squishy for our liking but I guess everybody has differing ideas of what makes a bed comfy.

Te Waonui Forest Retreat - Franz Josef Glacier - Building
6
8,9 Excellent (234 reviews)
R7 910+
Overview Reviews
Te Waonui Forest Retreat is the ideal place for you to reconnect with nature and the dramatic surroundings, offering an unparalleled example of sustainable accommodation. Our four wings join together to enclose an area of dense native rainforest, ensuring a sense of privacy. Our specially personalised reception area and array of in-room features and facilities give you choice, and a feeling of total relaxation, while the exquisite Canopy Restaurant serves 5 course degustation dinner.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Great ambiance, nice location
Cons: Buffet could be better in terms of options for kids.
6,7 Good
Pros: Bedrooms were nice size and bathroom had both a shower and a bath.
Cons: This was our lost expensive hotel during a 5 week tour of NZ at NZD1,000 (£500) per night. The so called Degustation menu consisted of 4 cold dishes prepared in advance and one hot course cooked to order. The service was appalling - we arrived at our allotted slot on time but were basically ignored for 15 minutes before being shown to a table. Another 15 minutes later (and after some prompting from us) a menu arrived....and so on. Lots of staff but all seems pretty chaotic. What should have been a real treat for two nights over the New Year period ended up being a total disappointment. We would have been so much better checking into a local motel at a quarter of the price and enjoying good basic food at one of the diners in town. I suspect that the hotel makes most of its money from bus tours with higher paying guests providing the profit on top. Rooms themselves were of a high standard. It is clear that we are not the only ones to feel let down as the reception staff did not have the temerity to ask how our stay was.
7,5 Good
Pros: Beautiful surroundings
Cons: I felt it was a bit over priced
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Lovely hotel - great setting. Dinner in the evening was amazing (albeit it very small portions) rooms lovely too
Cons: The bed was not comfortable. Mattress was hard and the topper peaked in the middle making you feel like you were sleeping on a slope!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Bed really comfy and loved the underfloor heating in the bathroom. Dinner and breakfast excellent as were the staff.
4,0 Okay
Pros: Breakfast was good
Cons: Dinner was very bad and much too expensive
7,1 Good
Cons: Too cold outside the room and in restaurant. Insufficient heating.

10,0 Excellent
Pros: Very clean and new facilities
4,0 Okay
Pros: Good location free parking
Cons: Noise at 1am of people talking even though I had private room
10,0 Excellent
Pros: It was very spacious and clean even though we stayed in a 10 bed dorm - it didn't feel crowded. Lockers are available in the room itself. Well stocked and very big kitchen. The lounge and dining area were huge, clean and very comfortable. Appropriately priced
Cons: The wifi sucked and we pretty much had to use our own data card throughout our stay
1,0 Poor
Pros: The facility had a lot of amenities such as pool table, saunas, and a large kitchen.
Cons: The facility put a lot of money into fun amenities but all of the door for the rooms slammed and were very loud. If a neighboring persons door shut/slammed, we heard it in our room as well. And because there were a lot of rooms and people, there was continuous noise from doors slamming all night. It was like a war zone in the facilities. I just wish the backpackers spot would have put a little more money on quieter doors. I basically did not get any sleep. I debated going to the car to get some sleep. We were in New Zealand for two weeks staying in 13 different towns, therefore a bunch of backpackers places and this one was the loudest.
7,4 Good
Pros: Large youth hostile enviroment , huge kitchen facilities well stocked. Very quiet and overall clean.
Cons: No one was there to check in, but they left the key in an Envelope so Not a problem. But there were no parking spots left when we arrived. There were people in front of the hostile camping in the street. The doors were left open to the patio which flowed to the lounge kitchen and into hallways with rooms and bathrooms. Thus it seemed it was open access to all who cared to walk in From the street.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The joined bathroom and kitchen are fully functional and good. Had a good time staying there.
Cons: All nice.
5,0 Okay
Pros: Nothing really.
Cons: There was no designated smoking area. I was told rather sarcastically to stand out on the road. The walls are not soundproof and we could hear people having sex in the next room.

Cons: Although a really good motel, it’s quite expensive. Compared to other motels we stayed in on our trip it offered the same facilities but cost more. Franz Josef is a small place so its understandable, but I will probably shop around for somewhere cheaper next time.

8,0 Excellent
Pros: Motel owners / staff behavior was very courteous and helpful. Property was right besides the town centre. We had a flood due to which we had to stay for an extra day, and we were made to feel very comfortable by the staff there. The cleaning staff also was cheerful and helped us with local places to visit.
Cons: Room could have had a small sink apart from the bathroom sink for cleaning utensils. Room was a little small but manageable. Entertainment system could be made modern by using netflix / youtube instead of DVDs.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Our circumstances were exceptional. After planning an overnight stay we had to stay 5 nights in Franz Josef as roads were closed to north and south due to landslips in bed weather . The property provided what we needed over the period . It was clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful. It was a pleasure to have an extended stay here .
Cons: Our first night was in a compact studio which was adequate for one night but if staying longer could have been a bit cramped with our big suitcases.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The Location is perfect. Around the motel are a lot of different restaurants and bars and it’s next to the Franz-Josef Glacier. The hosts are amazing and got in contact with us before we arrived to inform is about the current street situation and that we should be aware of it. Furthermore they helped us to book a flight around the glacier. Thanks a lot!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: We spent one night in Franz Josef on our West Coast road trip to Queenstown. The Bella Vista was clean, the room was a tad small but for one night as a place to sleep it on our way to else where it served it’s purpose. The beds were comfortable and the complex quiet at night so had a good nights sleep. Location is great, close to everything. Nothing special to report here, it is what it is.
6,7 Good
Pros: Location
Cons: Small room for a family of 4 while the costs were higher all the other places we are staying
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Very kind and cozy
Cons: None
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Like all of the Bella Vista’s we have stayed at clean and very nice rooms. Brilliant location and accessible parking. Great host too.
Cons: Nothing was a great stay
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Great check in and service. Very friendly and helpful. Room was a little on the small side but the bed and pillows and facilities great. Thought it a little expensive for what is was but guess that is the time of the year ( January holidays) excellent location.
Cons: Room on the smaller side

7,0 Good
Pros: Staff was very helpful with giving advice re: the area, where to eat, what to do etc. Bed was nice and comfy too.
Cons: First night our shower was luke warm and had quite poor pressure :(. Second night it has improved. Not enough parking space on the grounds, we had to park outside.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: Great quirky hostel and really easy to make new friends.
6,7 Good
Pros: The soup was amazing.
Cons: Beds need new mattresses.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: Nice interior. USB sockets.
2,0 Mediocre
Pros: The parking
Cons: The room smelled extremely musty which affected my asthma, and water leaked in through the closed window when it rained all night. The kitchen was a mess with sparrows flying everywhere inside when I went to get a cup of tea before we left. One staff member walked past us about 7 times and never smiled or said hello. I would never go back there or recommend it to anyone.
6,7 Good
Pros: The location of this backpackers is fantastic. The check-in was easy and friendly. The included breakfast was great and general atmosphere was easy-going and friendly. The mattresses were clean, as was the bedding. We were warm and cosy overnight.
Cons: The room was very expensive for the facilities provided but I think this is an issue of the location more than the individual property. Franz Josef is an expensive place to stay. What paid for dungeon of a room with a small bathroom in Franz, gets us a modern, airy, 2-bedroom private apartment with mountain views in Wanaka, for example.
6,3 Good
Pros: Good size and clean common kitchen. Generous breakfast.
Cons: A bit pricey for very basic facilities. No hot shower in the morning.

5,4 Okay
Pros: The location is good for seeing the Franz Josef glacier.
Cons: The key thing to know about Rainforest Retreat is that it's a sprawling complex-- one part serves backpackers and summer employees, and the other has higher end options. The higher end options--like the tree huts--aren't worth the money. We experienced the following challenges while there: - There was a major water shortage during our stay. This had happened before (google Franz Josef and water shortages and you'll see several hits), and the next town over (Fox Glacier) had running water. -The hotel staff blamed the water shortage on the city government (which was true), but did nothing for the guests during this time. Since they were shipping water in, the water wasn't potable/safe to drink, but we didn't find that out until we walked into reception. We had to buy our own bottled water to have drinking water. - The hotel staff also refused to do anything when our room had no running water-- they similarly blamed this on the city. However, that wasn't entirely true-- the backpackers had running water for their shower, and the maintenance people (who came 10 hours later) told us that a clogged water filter was why our particular hut had no water. The maintenance staff did eventually fix this so that we were able to shower once during our stay. - The walls between the units were paper thin. When our neighbors in the adjoining unit came home, we heard every movement they made, down to their lying down on the bed. - All of the furnishings were worn and had seen better days. In short, this was not worth $200 a night for a room. I would expect the hotel staff to ensure I have safe water to drink, that any maintenance issues are promptly dealt with (and that staff actually listened to their guests' concerns), and that the business tries to provide a good experience for their guests regardless of the external conditions. For somewhere nice, I would suggest you stay somewhere else, probably in the Fox Glacier township.

Pros: We chose to stay here for one night - 3 single beds. To offer that, the room should be slightly larger. It was ok, but expensive. Clean but not really new. It was a good stay. Quite.
Cons: Room was crowded.

7,1 Good
Pros: We stayed in the room with bath and shower. It is very basic but clean. It is one step up from camping. It did have a refrigerator.
Cons: The room was small. There was no ice available to either use or purchase on site. They, along with many places in NZ should invest in screens for their windows and doors.
9,6 Excellent
Cons: The clothes dryer was not working
7,0 Good
Pros: The Holiday Park is is a good location for those travelling by car. It is a few minutes' drive from the village centre in an attractive location. The cabins are functional and spacious.
Cons: The children had hoped for a playground but they loved the little go-carts.
6,8 Good
Pros: It was clean, functional and available
Cons: It was quite basic
7,1 Good
Pros: Liked the convenience and cleanliness of the place
Cons: The lack of phone signal sand the shocking WiFi were awful negatives. Not being provided with any soap for the shower wasn’t ideal either
7,5 Good
Pros: A share kitchen was well appointed. The staff were lovely.
Cons: It was very small and carpets needed upgrading as well as the screen on the shower which leaked water everywhere. The walls were also very thin and being located right next door to the communal kitchen was very noisy- like every drawer that was opened was slammed shut. The wifi was really poor.
