You have to be careful of flying rocks/cracked windshields, depending on what roads you plan to be on. You might want to consider extra coverage for that.

Limited options to be honest. Make sure if you use budget, to have them highlight all fees and get it in writing.

The Yukon requires that lights are on all the time. The roads are OK even during winter and not difficult to navigate
Verified travelerNov 2023
Driving in Whitehorse during winter is easy as long as you drive slow and follow the common sense of the road. Driving Force is an excellent rental company.
Verified travelerOct 2023
There are a few parking meters downtown but parking is free after 5:30pm. Easy downtown area to walk. Restaurants everywhere.
Verified travelerSept 2023
Must yield to pedestrians crossing the street on non-stoplight intersections. For an American like me, the speed limit may seem slightly slow, but that's OK.

KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Whitehorse

  • Choosing car hire in Whitehorse will allow you to explore the incredible national parks and wilderness regions of Canada’s Yukon Territory. Whitehorse is a small city and there are no public transport links to the surrounding areas. Hiring a car in Whitehorse will let you drive to stunning locations, like Kluane National Park and Marsh Lake, which cannot be reached by public transport. Whitehorse is also the starting point for the famous circular Yukon road trip, which allows drivers to cover most of the Yukon area via its main highways and then return to Whitehorse via Route 1. You can enjoy driving through the lakes south of Whitehorse and taking in the spectacular views from the car bridges too.
  • If you’re flying into Whitehorse, you can pick up your hire car as soon as you arrive at Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport (YXY). Passengers landing here will find car hire desks located inside the main Arrivals Hall on the north side of the terminal. Once you have collected your hire car, you will be able to reach the city centre in around 10min by road, as opposed to around 30min by public transport.
  • When you choose car hire in Whitehorse, you should get to know some of the Canadian driving conventions and customs before you go. One thing to watch out for while driving in Whitehorse is the use of carpool lanes, which are not common in the UK. Carpool lanes are usually found in urban areas and are marked with diamond symbols. You can only drive in the carpool lane if there are two or more people in your vehicle. If you are visiting Yukon in winter, you must also pay attention to weather conditions. Make sure you take blankets and warm clothes with you and don’t set out on long journeys into remote areas if the weather is likely to change.
  • Yukon is sparsely populated and much of the area is wilderness, so you will generally find that the driving conditions are good and that the roads are mostly clear. Watch out for wildlife on the roads, especially if you are driving in forested areas where animals may emerge. You should also watch out for hikers walking near campsites during the summer months. If you are travelling for work and staying in Whitehorse, you will find that most traffic congestion occurs centrally and during rush hour, which generally falls from 07:00-09:00 and 15:00-18:00.
  • Medium hire cars in Whitehorse are around 51% cheaper than other car types, on average

  • How much does a Small car hire cost in Whitehorse?

A Small car hire in Whitehorse costs R1 798 per day, on average.

  • What type of car is recommended for driving in Whitehorse?

If you want to explore the surrounding Yukon landscape, a larger vehicle with off-road capacity, such as an SUV, is highly recommended. This type of vehicle is much easier to drive in difficult conditions, such as on dirt roads or roads with snow and ice on them, which you may encounter even during the summer months in Yukon. Even if you visit Whitehorse in the summer, a large vehicle with a more powerful engine will help you cross large distances more efficiently and will give you a better view of the road – perfect for enjoying the incredible scenery.

  • What’s the speed limit in Whitehorse?

When you choose car hire in Whitehorse, remember that speed limit signs will be displayed in km/h rather than mph. If you’re driving in an urban area, the speed limit is usually 40-50 km/h (25-30 mph), while on rural roads, the speed limit sits at 60-70 km/h (35-45 mph). On dual carriageways, the speed limit is typically 80 km/h (50 mph), and on motorways, this limit goes up to 100 km/h (60 mph).

  • Where are the best places to park in Whitehorse?

If you opt for Whitehorse car hire, you will find central car parks where you can securely leave your vehicle. Parking in Whitehorse costs roughly C$16-20 (£9-15) for a 2 hour stay. You will also have to pay if you want to park at campsites along the Yukon wilderness trail. Parking at these spots costs roughly C$20 (£15) for a day permit.

Could NOT get the car! Previously I was able to book the car for my son, and he picked it up at the airport. This time they would NOT do it without me being there personally. Same airport, same desk. Frustrating.

The pickup went smoothly and didn't take long. The problem with the car (dirt stuck to the wheels so that the car no longer drove well - even when it was picked up) was remedied well and the employees were very friendly. The car itself, even though it was only a year old, was already very dilapidated. We have never had a car in such poor external condition anywhere before. It had a huge crack in the windshield and dozens of scratches and dents, but it was fully drivable. Due to the road conditions in Whitehorse, such seem Appearances probably don't seem to be an obstacle to renting.

When signing up for the Budget rental through Kayak, we were not properly informed of the additional fees that would incur through driving on the Dempster highway through the Kayak menu nor through the customer service desk for budget. Were hit with an unexpected $1500 fee which more than doubled our trip costs.

My experience was overall excellent. The service was professional, quick & friendly. Drop off took a bit longer than pick up as only 1 employee was at the station & it was busy. The vehicle I got exceeded my expectations. It was clean & fuel efficient.
