Cappadocia has well-maintained roads and generally smooth driving terrain. There are plenty of roadside gas stations in most areas, so you don’t need to worry about running out of fuel. If you are exploring the city in your hire car, be aware that some historical urban areas have only very narrow roads, which can make turning and manoeuvring difficult. You should also be aware that traffic lights are situated very close to junctions on Cappadocian roads. This means that, if you pull up too close to the line at the traffic lights, you may obscure the light for the drivers behind you. Try to leave a decent distance when you pull up at traffic lights to avoid this.

There are high-speed tolls (HGS) in operation on all of Turkey’s main roads and motorways. Many rental vehicles in Cappadocia are fitted with an automatic toll collection machine that keeps track of the high-speed areas you pass through. As you drive into a toll booth, you should slow your speed down to 30kph as this will allow the automated metre to log the toll for you. You will then pay the total charge to your rental branch when you return your car at the end of your trip. Although these toll booths are numerous in and around Cappadocia, they are not very expensive. For example, passing through a toll booth usually costs around 2-3 ₺ (less than £1).

British visitors to Cappadocia must obtain an International Driver’s Permit before they can legally hire a car or drive on the road. International Driver’s Permits can be purchased for around £10-£15 and should be acquired in advance of your trip to Turkey. When you are driving around in Cappadocia, make sure that you have both your IDP and your British licence. You will need to present both to the authorities if you are pulled over for any reason. Drivers must also be over the age of 21 to legally hire a car in Cappadocia. Some rental companies will only lease vehicles to drivers aged 26 or over. However, some car hire firms available in Cappadocia offer rentals to younger drivers, usually for an additional surcharge. When you go to collect your vehicle, make sure you have your passport, your British driver’s licence, and your IDP with you. You should also take your credit or debit card to make your purchase.
