Pros: This was our second time staying at Yamada Bessou and it was wonderful yet again. The building is beautiful; the staff friendly and helpful; the breakfast delicious and elaborate. We loved it all!The ryokan is in a great location. We walked to onsens, restaurants, shops, the train station. This place is a true treasure.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Feeling japanese authentic hot spring. Highly recommendable in Beppu.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Everything was perfect. What an incredible place to stay for discovering Beppu. Rumi ( sorry if i don't write well your name =/ ) was so kind and helpful. Each detail was thought to make the perfect night for me and my girlfriend. It was my girlfriend's birthday and Yamada Bessou made us some magic surprises for us. We won't never forget, a pure moment of hapiness during our trip. That was the perfect illustration of " why we love Japan". The rooms are so clean and beautiful, you will discover a real Ryokan as you've always imagined. The garden was so nice, you will can observe it from the window of your room. We've had the pleasure to wear Yukata during our stay. Tea is also offered in the room with a set to serve it. If you choose the breakfast during your experience, you will be served in a relax atmosphere with calm music and cute decoration. The food was so good and prepared with love. We loved it. People of Yasada Bessou were so sweet, you can go there with your eyes shut! Thank you for this great experience, Lovely, Steven & Laurene

8,8 Excellent
Pros: It is a very clean and comfortable hostel. The breakfast is good. The staff is kind and helpful.
Cons: The private onsen is not located near the bathroom. Some share toilets are smelly.
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Staff were friendly and gave us a nice tour of the place, room was spacious and clean and the private onsen was absolutely lovely. Shared bathrooms were also nice and clean, complete with toiletries. A little pricier than other places we've stayed in Japan but well worth it and would definitely recommend for an authentic Japanese experience.
Cons: A little on the pricey side as there were only 3 of us and we had a large room.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Big room Staff is nice and good in English I like the English
Cons: The onsen is small
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Very welcoming, real traditional experience. We loved this place!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: I want in not expect much for the price but was greatly surprised by this Michelin award winning establishment. Very traditional but with a European toilet. The outside hot spring that had to be booked each was out standing. Don’t forget to pay extra for the breakfast. The staff all went above and beyond.
Cons: The wifi varies by location in the facility. Some parts of my room upstairs excellent others spots not so good. The pin in google map puts in the little lane to the west or back of the place. The lane it is one to the left as you look at the hills behind.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Yamada Bessou. It was so lovely to stay in such a wonderful old house with so much character and history. We loved the private onsen. Such a great way to relax at the end of the day. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the room was lovely and clean and had everything you needed.

Overview Reviews
With a stay at Ryokan Sennari in Beppu, you'll be within a 5-minute drive of Takegawara Onsen and Umitamago. The front desk is staffed during limited hours. Free self parking is available onsite.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Consistently outstanding food, breakfast and dinner were out of this world. Truly charming service and excellent premises, clean, warm, friendly, efficient- Ryokan perfection with lovely in-house onsens literally a few steps away from the station, and with excellent parking. Absolutely perfect.
Cons: Nothing- it couldn't be better. I just hope that the unique and wonderful features of this Ryokan are there forever.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Everything else
Cons: It was a bit pricey
8,8 Excellent
Pros: the place is clean and staff is really helpful. the place is near Beppu train station. The breakfast was Amazing and Good. The private outdoor onsen was absolutely wonderful.
Cons: nothing to complain about :)
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The location is really close to the station, you can reach the hell's or other attractions really good and fast from it. The room is pretty big and you have an amazing view of the garden with a pond. They have 3 Onsen / public baths. Which you can use in private for as long as you want for the 2 indoor baths. Outside one is limited to 30-40 minutes which is enough in my opinion. Everything is really clean. The breakfast was perfect after a good night rest. Sadly there was no option on booking for dinner. But all in all I'm very happy staying at this really nice ryokan
Cons: For a solo traveler a bit pricey but the ryokan experience is still one of the best you can have.
7,5 Good
Cons: Hotel is located 2 minutes from Beppu Station. It is easy to find restaurant and more shopping around there. It was such a great time that we can relaxing at private onsen in hotel and no need to pay extra. Breakfast was good with Japanese style. But very surprised when we back to our room. Housekeeping clear our Futon (bed), it seems they don't want us relaxing more after breakfast and waiting for check out time. That's I really don't like it.
8,3 Excellent
Pros: The staff is really attentive and the facilities/room was nice if a little dated. The food was authentic as was the experience. There are specific times at which things are available (like the onsen), but generally they’re relatively broad.
Cons: The dinner was a little expensive and the furniture was a little dated. There is also only one choice for food (at the ryokan, there are a few other options if you venture out), so if you’re not comfortable with local classic dishes, it might not appeal to you.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: The location is near Beppu train station which is very convenient.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: I like the staffs' friendliness, amenities and especially the food there. It's really delicious!
Cons: Nothing!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Beautiful place! We really enjoyed our stay at this magnificent Ryokan. The experience you are looking for if you travel japan! Traditional rooms with modern elements, emoji space and finished with love for the detail. very nice Onsens (2 Indoor and 1 outdoor), great staff, beautiful garden views and very clean. Can’t put it words. Highly recommended if you go to Beppu and would definitely go again! Arigato gonzaimas!
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Personal onsen (in the room) was located in the open air and was very good and picturesque. Public open bath was able to be reserved at any time for 30 minutes. It was very comfortable to rest there, because it's hard to find gender-mixed baths in other places. Dinner and breakfast were served in the common space (dining room), but were very delicious and big enough. Room was very spacious and pretty. It had a great view from the windows. It was really comfortable.

Cons: Bathroom shower wasn’t working properly (in house one) and no heating system apart from rooms wilhich made rest of the spaces rather cold and chilly. Pros: Everything was perfect during my 2 night stay. Staff were welcoming and attentive. Food was delicious and Michelin Star standard. Open air onsen was superb and quite exclusive (private) due to low density of guests. Overall superb experience.
Cons: I have nothing bad to say about this ryokan. I will highly recommend it to my friends.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Very warm and friendly staff, being very kind to my 6-year old daughter. The hotel is well situated being at the mountain, if you want to spend some days in calm and relaxing atmosphere, this hotel is definitely much better than others you can find at seaside Beppu (plenty of tourists). Also the first day we waked up and find many monkeys on the top of the roof and they jumped from one tree to another, fantastic scene! The meals are great, authentic Japanese traditional meals!
Cons: Nothing, everything perfect!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Unbelievable experience. Easily one of the finest Ryokans in Japan. And top customer service.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The location was most inspiring! It was clean, garden immaculate, the air is fresh.

The hotel also kept our luggage for us after we checked-out and went sightseeing. Coffee and water are available at the lobby for guests. Other amenities such as razor, shower cap, etc are also available at the lobby for guests. Room size is pretty standard for Japan's hotel. They went out of their way to make us wellcome and attended to our every need. Stunning views and a very good onsen with great toiletries. Superbly efficient operation.
Cons: We stayed in a traditional japaneese room, which appeals to families. It would have been nice to have an option of segregating a small part of the room with sliding doors for parents to stay awake in, while children to go to sleep earlier. This is something we found useful in other similar hotels, that we stayed at in Japan.

3,3 Mediocre
Pros: I liked the location of the place.
Cons: The room that i got, had smell like fungus. air conditioner did'n't work. House had more rules than any 3 star hotel and you pay the same price. Pay only with cash and got no receipt. And the day i was, there was bees flying through the air conditioner in the lounge. By the way- laundry- do it yourself near by!
7,1 Good
Pros: The location is great. You get there really fast from the station with just a short walk. The staff is very nice and helps you as much as they can; for example by finding a good onsen nearby. You can leave your luggage in a locker before and apparently also after checkout time.
Cons: The building and facilities are very old. They do their job, but you shouldn't expect too much. I also couldn't see the stuff often around. Especially before check-in time there is nobody around, so early check-in isn't possible at all. Maybe it would work if you contact them before, but I never knew for sure when I arrive.

9,2 Excellent
Pros: Everything about the hotel was very nice. Great room, nice common areas, in-house spa and bath, and near train/bus station.
Cons: The only, and minor, downside was the hallway on our floor. In need of freshed up carpet. Stains and wear are showing in contrast to everything else.
7,5 Good
Pros: Good location and friendly staffs
Cons: Their onsen was bit disappointing
8,0 Excellent

10,0 Excellent
Pros: Staff at the hotel went out their way to help. Food was good had options of a buffet and also the onsen was amazing. It was a wonderful experience at beppu. 1
Cons: The response from booking.com was very un helpful with communication.
10,0 Excellent
Cons: I booked a triple sharing room, but was not informed it can only accommodate two pax. Rather stumped as I did select the option of three guests. No biggie as top up for additional pax was quite reasonable though.
7,4 Good
Pros: The parking facilities and access was very good. The room was comfortable enough, although it was too expensive. Although we did not travel by train, persons who do will find that the train station is convenient to the hotel.
Cons: Going into the restroom facilities, the high step up is very dangerous. Many people who have a hard time walking can get hurt. The meal plates are very poor whether they are for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Large clear plates are necessary and important. The view from our hotel room was not the best. Of course, it was pouring down rain on the day we left, so it was nearly impossible to have a great view of the City.
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Onsen at the hotel is good
Cons: Near from station only 450m, near from mall (you me mall) only 650m. Very good location
7,5 Good
Pros: Good value for money
Cons: Far away from attractions Only two hot springs available
5,0 Okay
Cons: Hotel is crowded.

Pros: It's a charming spot right next to train station with a bath to rival some of the town's onsens
Cons: n/a
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Very nice place, Japanese slyle room and onsen.
7,1 Good
Pros: Close to Beppu station and bus stop. The place is very clean and it also has private onsen.
Cons: It would have been better if there were fresh air coming into the room as the window could not be opened so that the room will not be damp.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: I didn't have high expectations because the place is obviously old but I was pleasantly surprised- while things were old, it was clean and very livable and the owner made sure to make us feel welcome and use the bath which we really enjoyed. It looks dark in the picture but it was very enjoyable. The rooms were large and the toilets Western with a few channels on the TV and a nice tea service set so life was good. We found a great Yakitori shop around the corner (味にわか) and there was enough other food and entertainment in the immediate area. The station is an easy walk away as well. Nothing fancy but Kokage was like a nice version of grandma's house with a cozy onsen.
Cons: A little tricky to find with it hidden from the main street (but Google Maps found it fine). If I cared about fancy and new I might have been disappointed but it was actually fun and relaxing.
5,0 Okay
Pros: Nothing
Cons: REALLY FILTHY. Don't go there it's really dirty. Please see the pictures. Really expensive discusting place. It looks like it hasn't been clean since 1960. I understand when a place is old but does it have to be filthy? I don't think so! The floor and the wall have a lot of stains since they never been replace. Nobody tried to even clean it! I don't have pictures of the onsen but just to make you understand we wrote dirty at the bottom of the bath... The tab there is full of something really sticky. Just avoid. Also it is really really noisy, you can hear everything from the street and can't open the windows for fresh air.
6,3 Good
Pros: Quirky old building with charming character.
Cons: Could definitely use some updating.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: The two old women who run the place are incredibly kind. The rooms are cozy and the onsen downstairs is great.
Cons: There is shampoo in the onsen, but no conditioner. It wasn't a dealbreaker or anything, just a small thing I had to go buy on my own.
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Free hot springs and great location
Cons: Maybe better English next time
9,0 Excellent
Pros: Authentic minshuku (guest house), full of character, run by a pair of elderly Japanese ladies. Not much English spoken, but enough, and they were really helpful. They even let us check in early. Compact but comfortable room (6 tatami mat sized) complete with fridge and an extension cable. The best thing about it though was the genuine onsen in the basement -- you could have it all to yourself for a 40-minute private slot in the evenings. With most onsens being single-sex, this gave my girlfriend and I the chance to relax and enjoy the onsen experience together. Fantastic location too, tucked away just a few minutes' walk from Beppu train station. Turn right off the main road and then turn right again immediately -- there is a small sign, but it's easily missed. There was a good information board to get you oriented. It was a great place to stay.
Cons: The mattresses and pillows were fairly thin -- not the worst we slept on by any means, but it wasn't the most comfortable night's sleep for us westerners.
7,5 Good
Pros: The inn is very conveniently located - just a 5 min stroll from the train station. It has a homely feel and the onsen will be reserved for your private use - good if you are not comfortable bathing with others.
Cons: The inn looks as tired as the two grandmas manning the place. It's very clean but could do with some upgrading. Rooms are on the second floor so you will have to lug your luggage up the stairs. Not suitable for the elderly who can't climb stairs.

Cons: Nothing
7,5 Good
Pros: very reasonable price
9,2 Excellent
Pros: We were surprised and delighted with this property because of the room size and value for money. We had a large room on forth floor and took advantage of the private onsen on site just great.
Cons: Nothing
5,0 Okay
Pros: We have booked 2 rooms (one is big & nice with nice view which is good for 4 people, and the other one is a standard room which is small & looks very old without view) with satisfaction on the big room but not the standard room. Really think renovation is needed. Its location is good with 10 mins walk to a big shopping mall with supermarket & restaurants.
Cons: Renovation is needed for the standard room which is too old.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Very nice, large and comfortable room in Japanese traditional style. Good location approx. 10-15 min. walk from Beppu railway station. Nearby restaurant area (although difficult to assess what they offered due to Japanese only signage). Staff was very friendly and polite. Machines offering free coffee, tea or water on the floors, both hot and cold variations.
Cons: Bathroom also Japanese traditional style; not good for a quick shower Airconditioning was a bit noisy. Hotel lobby had good air conditioning, same for room, but on the floors it was too hot.
8,3 Excellent
Pros: The Onsen (shared hot bath/public bath/toilet) was a good experience at the hotel. Although it is awkward because you have to pass through the dining area. It was nice also that there is a free coffee/tea/water dispenser outside the room at the lounge area. The place is walking distance to the bus and train station and has lots of restaurants outside. ATM is accessible at 7eleven store near the hotel.
10,0 Excellent

5,8 Okay
Pros: The traditional Japanese breakfast looked absolutely amazing, and had clearly been prepared with a lot of tender loving care. But if like me you don't like traditional Japanese food, you really won't like it. I didn't eat mine but felt so guilty, as it was almost a work of art! So if you like traditional food, it would probably be a 10 out of 10. Had my first ever Onsen here - came out feeling very relaxed. Excellent location for the port, buses and train station, and close to the action in town.
Cons: The breakfast!
7,1 Good
Pros: The spring is very good. The sea view in the room is excellent. The indoor spring is very clean and have rest area
Cons: The dining provided is just fair, not too special. The hotel is a little bit old and the outdoor spring needs to pay.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Hotel had an English speaker on staff. Staff very friendly. Room was clean. Very good location.
Cons: The baths were nice but not very hot. Would be nice if they had some lights outside the bath towards the sea, it would be a great view at night.
7,1 Good
Pros: Room was nice and big, really spacious. Nice sea view.
Cons: Paid for half board. When we went for dinner the staff forgot about us and we had to call them a number of times. Dinner was quite small and certainly not worth 6000per person. We changed our breakfast time but the front desk didn't tell the kitchen so they weren't expecting us. Paid for private family bath. Bath was way, way, way too hot. It took 20 minutes to add enough cold water to make it bearable. I have been to plenty of onsen in Japan and that was crazy, especially compared to the less than hot bath for general use.
7,5 Good
Pros: About 10mins walk from Beppu station. Awesome sea view from my room. Private onsen was enjoyable.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Friendly staff. We enjoyed the foot hot spring in the room very much with sea view. The dinner and breakfast was rich and delicious.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Very traditional, true, peaceful. We loved it

Pros: Close to the HELLs, excellent view of Beppu Restaurant is fantastic.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Great Japanese experience.
Cons: None noted
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Very spacy tatami room. Excellent japanese dinner with all kinds of food - much more than somebody can eat. And in the middle of the hot spring hells in Beppu.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: They employed some students for placement and they are excellent and professional! We don’t speak Japanese and there was a staff from Taiwan who spoke mandarin with us, we could therefore ask him anything that we don’t understand and we enjoyed our stay here very much. Another Japanese student worked in restaurant introduced the dishes to us in fluent English and it was really impressive! Love our stay here!!!!
Cons: None
7,5 Good
Pros: It's a big Hotel with 3 onsen baths located in different places of the hotel, the attention of the personal was remarkable, friendly and willing to give all the help posible, they let us keep the luggage for free in the hotel after the check out and lend us umbrellas to visit the jigokus.
Cons: The location is way too far from any JR station, so you have to walk for around 45 mins uphill and is exhausting. Also in my opinion the price was a bit too high for the size of the room and considering that breakfast was not included
7,5 Good
Pros: The hotel is clean. But the hotel decoration is a bit dated; I guess that's the reason they are able to keep the rate low.
7,5 Good
Pros: Dinner was good.
5,4 Okay
Pros: Close to beppu hells
Cons: Too overpriced
6,7 Good
Pros: Nice onsen and friendly staff
Cons: On the main road with traffic
8,3 Excellent
Pros: The food was excellent, fresh and many selections to choose from. The location is on the main road and convenient to a lot of the scenic areas. The roof-top onsen was very nice.
Cons: one of the staff members were not too friendly. All the rest were great. I don't know if he was having a bad day or it was because of my language barrier ? The onsen water temperature could've been a little hotter.

8,3 Excellent
Pros: The host is exceptionally nice and helpful. We had a great time chatting about my plan to Aso mountain, in which he assisted me with some guides on when is the best time to go and what is the best way to get there by public transportation. Room is clean and the traditional breakfast is decent as well. For those who would like to know the onsen (hot spring) more, the host will be the one to ask.
Cons: I will say the location is a bit far from Beppu downtown (train station), so for those who would like to come in winter, please prepare for no restaurant opening after 6 in the area, aka Kannawa of the guesthouse.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The host is the nicest guy ever! Everyone in Beppu is very friendly but he went above and beyond. He helped me plan my daytrip to Yufuin and drew me a detailed map along with all the bus timings. He shared some shochu and snacks and we stayed up late talking one night. He helped solve a booking mistake I had made. The place itself is 1 minute from the bus station in kannawa, and a short walk to a ton of onsen/jigoku, but off to the side so there is little road noise at night. Laundry was cheap. Everything was new and clean.
Cons: I had the room to myself so it didn't matter at all, but with multiple beds in the same room and no curtain privacy, I could see it being uncomfortable for some to sleep.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Great location, friendly staff, comfortable beds. I'd stay here again!
Cons: No lockers
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Location is very good, walking distance to 6 jikoku (famous sightseeing spot) and hyotan onsen. The staff is very nice too.
Cons: room is tidy but found a cockroach in the bed room.
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Location: Away from the station, and close to most of the Jigokus; very picturesque area with vents spouting steam all around you
Cons: Had a tough time locating the hostel in the evening, when I arrived. A bigger name-board (with lighting) and an English location entry in Google maps would help
3,8 Mediocre
Pros: No bins in room, one shower didn't work very well, sides on beds, air con in Japanese so couldn't work well, difficult to find, no kitchen no cold water

Visitors to Beppu will find that the Ryokan Kappo Sekiya is a fantastic accommodation choice. From the hotel, JR Beppu Station is just 1km away. This hotel makes a great place to kick back and relax after a long day of sightseeing.
7,9 Good
Pros: The hotel is a bit outdated. The staff is nice. They cooked us Japanese traditional dinner. It was pricy but delicious. The onsen needs some repairs but it is functional. The hotel provides all you need to enjoy the onsen.
Cons: Some charges that we didn’t expect. The owners didn’t bother to explain to us what they were charging us for. It was all in Japanese.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: It is a very nice family ryokan. Nice and comfortable Japanese style bathrobes are provided and the staffs are very helpful. When we checked in, everything was clearly explained to us and the room was very cozy. Tea and snacks are provided and the hot spring is available all night long. When I asked the staffs for recommendations for food, hot springs or places to go, they are always very helpful. The Japanese style breakfast is definitely the highlight of the trip.
Cons: The mosquitos are a bit of a problem.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Kind and nice staff, delicious dinner, pretty big hotel room, large and warm hot spring. Good.
Cons: - No private bath. It is only problem in my room. -If you are korean, you might feel bad about dinner at first. But you will get used to it. Just because it is unfamiliar type of food in korea.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The staff, the breakfasts, the room size, the checkout time.. it was all superb. The Ryokans location is a two minute walk from the main bus stop in Beppu.
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Convenience, close to the shopping mall
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The food was very delicious and reasonably priced. Dinner was really delicious and breakfast was good too. The onsen was very small but the water is very warm. It’s walking distance to The sand bath house and also, the bus to the Hells of Beppu is just 5 minutes away. The rooms were big and only a toilet was in the room. For the price, it was good value for food and room.
Cons: The property was a bit old but well maintained. The staff spoke decent enough English. The onsen a bit crowded after dinner but in the morning and afternoon it was fine.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Fantastic breakfast and wholesome dinner ryokan style. Close to Bus station and a little walk from JR Station. Very hospital staffs and great 2 nights twin room
9,6 Excellent

Pros: Had a really nice stay here. The room was comfortable and spacious. The bath is really nice and the dinner and breakfast were delicious. They don’t speak English so much but are very helpful and provide printed information for your confort.
7,9 Good
Pros: Everything else! The owners were very nice, and the staff were always perky and polite. The food is amazing. The place as an atmosphere of being family-owned and run, so a little less formal than most ryokan. Good value for money.
Cons: Rooms smell a little smoky.
