10,0 Excellent
Pros: The host was fantastic, the private onsen exceeded expectations. Location was very convenient and the breakfast was amazing, I highly recommend it. WiFi was surprisingly fast. After we had a tour of the place and were shown to our room, my wife said: "this is so romantic, if we weren't already married I'd think you're about to propose". We got the traditional experience I was hoping we'd have :)
Cons: Mattress was thin and not very comfortable by modern and western standards, but that does not mean our stay was not absolutely worth it. I still highly recommend this place.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Everything is great.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Nostalgia in every corner. Yamada Bessou is the only place anyone should ever stay at in Beppu. It was built in the 1930s and remodeled after WWII, and it's retained it's charming retro vibes. I came to Beppu to bathe and relax, so here I bathed in the communal bath and magical, open air bath many times. I spent hours in the parlor area reading a good book with quiet music playing in the background. Futon floor bed was comfortable, facilities were spotless (except perhaps communal bath), and the building was beautiful. The photos online don't do this place justice. Breakfast was delicious, and there was tea and coffee available at any time. The hosts are lovely and friendly. I immediately asked for a second night, and I'm glad I could stay longer.
Cons: The women's communal bathroom seemed a bit aged for comfort, like it could use a good power washing. But that kinda added to the charm of the place, so it was no big deal. Also wished they served dinner, because the breakfast was so good!
7,0 Good
Pros: Wonderful traditional breakfast, garden and onsen.
Cons: No TV
9,2 Excellent
Pros: The onsen is about 15 minutes on foot from the train station. Not too difficult to find. We were welcomed with a cup of hot green tea and sakura mochi (it's cherry blossom season after all). There's a big beautiful cherry tree right in the front--can't imagine how beautiful it would have been when it blossomed a few weeks earlier. Initially we didn't book breakfast but we booked it when we arrived and we were not disappointed. Considering the cost of eating around Beppu, $10 for a breakfast is very good value. It was served in a traditional way in a large dining area with other guests; we enjoyed it very much. We also like the staff who can communicate well in English and their hospitality. People may have good days and bad days but in Japan, customers always expect a smile and courtesy. That's just how things work in Japan. Our next onsen in Yufuin shows how traditional this one is, from the way the host cleans the wheels of your suitcase before carrying it to your room, to the look, the feel of the onsen, the way food is served to you. And we like that a lot. Overall a very enjoyable experience. We're so glad we picked this over some large Western style near the train station. And you'll be too.
Cons: The facilities are a bit older but very well and extremely clean. There's nothing not to like.

9,6 Excellent
Pros: The staff were absolutely incredible! The kindness, attention to detail and the welcome has been absolutely unprecedented. The rooms and the location right next to the beautiful river and the gardens were spectacular.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Very helpful staffs , the traditional Japanese cottage is beautiful , tatami very comfort , they provided free private onsen , that’s amazing .
Cons: The bathroom shower is weak to supply hot water , luckily we use onsen bathroom , that’s better than bathroom in room ,
9,2 Excellent
Pros: The onsen is excellent with great privacy. The staff service is attentive. The room is clean and comfortable also with good size.
Cons: The price I booked is a bit too high. The food quality is not as good as I expect but still quite nice.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Room were inclusive of breakfast & dinner. And both meals were amazingly done! The staff were very very helpful and friendly and helped us in all Enquiries that we had. This is by far the most amazing stay we had!
Cons: Nothing at all. All were too good to be true!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Very warm and friendly staff, being very kind to my 6-year old daughter. The hotel is well situated being at the mountain, if you want to spend some days in calm and relaxing atmosphere, this hotel is definitely much better than others you can find at seaside Beppu (plenty of tourists). Also the first day we waked up and find many monkeys on the top of the roof and they jumped from one tree to another, fantastic scene! The meals are great, authentic Japanese traditional meals!
Cons: Nothing, everything perfect!
10,0 Excellent
Pros: The staff was very helpful, they took real good care of us. Nishimoto-San picked us up and dropped us off at the Beppu station, and also showed us how to take the bus to hot springs. The maid at the hotel was very attentive, making our bed, setting up breakfast and dinner and explaining to us what they are.
Cons: Nothing really. The facilities were fantastic. If you love privacy, you won’t be disappointed. Very quiet and peaceful. If you want late night snack, then you are out of luck. The hotel has a drink-only vending machine. You could stop by 7-11 which is about 15 minutes walk away from the hotel. That’s what we did.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: The location was most inspiring! It was clean, garden immaculate, the air is fresh.
Cons: The toilet is cold.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: Staff are so nice and responsive Food is great

7,0 Good
Pros: Breakfast was good and the place was clean and very spacious. The onsens were nice.
Cons: I arrived a few hours before check-in time, but there was no one to speak to at the reception or to keep the luggage before the actual check-in time. A bit expensive for the amenities.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Very near to Beppu Station & cheerful & helpful staff
Cons: No staff available in Ryokan when try to check in early... Got to leave the bags inside unattended unsure of its security & safety.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Really comfy traditional Japanese inn, exactly what I wanted for a short getaway. The place was really clean and simple. You get your own toilet and sink, but shower in the onsen which is shared among other guests in the hotel. It was still nice because the onsen is for private use, so each guest can use it for 30-40 mins at a time.
Cons: During the morning, I wanted to relax in my room after breakfast and before checking out, but a gardener started working right outside my window so I was unable to just sit and enjoy the view. I would have hoped the gardener could have waited until after 10AM checkout to start.

Pros: Always delighted to return to the hotel. Cheerful and passionate English-speaking staff. Helpful and they remember your needs. They give good advice on food options and travel tips. In my previous review I mentioned that my room was a bit dusty thus I gotta wear a face mask while sleeping - this time the room is quite clean and the dust problem is much reduced! Appreciate that.
Cons: Pillow, always the pillow. Nice bed but still the pillow is a bit too soft for my neck...and prefer a thick pillow. Hope they provide that option in my next stay... looking forward for returning to the hotel and seeing more choices of pillow type lol
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Location is the greatest point of this hotel, it's only 2 mins walk from the Jr station. Close to the bus stop, so you can go to the Beppu Onsen or Africa safari easily. A fair hotel for the price.

10,0 Excellent
Pros: The location was perfect. 3-4 minutes walk to Beppu Station and a lot of Restaurants and Izakayas nearby. The hotel staff were friendly and accommodating. My room (single room non-smoking) was very comfortable to stay with. The room has it's own hair dryer, fridge, TV, electric pot, 2 sets of cup&saucer, room slipper, a smart phone, telephone. And for the batroom it has 3 sets towel, body soap, hand&face soap, shampoo, conditioner and a disposable toothbrush and your own bathub. Plus they had a coin laundry at the 2nd flr and restaurant at the 1st flr. I had the most relaxing and comfortable stay the hotel.
Cons: It has no view from the window but it's okay

Pros: Great breakfast and nice staff
Cons: Small toilet but still okay
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Great value for money and excellent location. Staff extremely helpful, providing map and advice for dining and public bath kit (hotel does not have its own) . Very Good breakfast, Japanese style buffet with adequate good quality of choices. Very conveniently located for train station. Room size is generous for the cost and comfortable bed and good room facilities.
Cons: Its a competent hotel which offers all the basics-no real complaints about anything.

Pros: The hotel is a 10-15 minute walk from the station. It may seem a bit far if you are traveling with luggage. The staff were very polite and the facilities were very clean. The hotel may seem a bit far from the train station but is in a central location in relation to restaurants and major shopping areas.
Cons: The rooftop open air bath is a little smaller than it seems and the showers to bathe yourself before soaking take a while to warm up. It can also be quite windy on the rooftop which is may not feel too good in the nude. Much more pleasurable in the enclosed shared bath.

Pros: -Onsen(hot spring) was nice and comfortable. -Bus company is at next door, very easy and convenient to buy a bus day-pass there right before going out. -10 min walk from Beppu station. If you have a bus day-pass and with big luggage then might be better to take a bus. -There were 2 convenience store nearby. -wifi connection was good.
Cons: -Room was quite small. We didn’t bring any suitcase with us so was fine. People with big luggage should consider about the room size before booking. -Facilities were kind of old. Not a big deal tho. -There’s no plastic bags or any kind of small bags inside the room for us to bring our stuff when going to onsen( which is located on different floor.) Especially that we have to bring towels from room to onsen area due to hotel rules, a small bag provided would be appreciated.

8,0 Excellent
Pros: An excellent hotel on the outskirts of Beppu. The staff were very helpful and we made good use of the onsens (separate ones for male and female). Breakfast is Japanese style, so was a surprise on the first morning, but we enjoyed it. We used the yukatas quite a bit around the hotel and even wore them to breakfast.
Cons: It is quite a long way out of town, so you'll need a car or to use taxis if you want to get anywhere. The centre of Beppu does not have a lot going for it, but at least had some rugby fans around when we were there.
8,3 Excellent
Pros: The room is clean and new, and the view is awesome. Location is good for driving.
Cons: The public bath is a bit small.
5,0 Okay
Pros: The staff were fantastic and worked very hard to accomodate our family including getting an extra room at short notice.
Cons: Very little English at all. Difficult to order in the restaurant, understand the staff, understand the tours etc. Room was small, beds and pillows hard (like many Japanese properties) and there really was no wherte to sit or work.
7,1 Good
Pros: 1. A very, very spacious hotel room with a wide sea view of Beppu Bay. 2. Very close (10 mins) away from the the Kintetsu Beppu Ropeway, a popular tourist destination in the area.
Cons: 1. Called the receptionist from the room and they said they couldn't speak English. 2. They charge JPY100 for the bottled water in the fridge. Not a lot, but didn't expect that.
7,5 Good
Pros: The service overall was good.
Cons: The hotel a bit too old and the room has smell when I go in. The breakfast and dinner were not expect like that. I expect more grand and nice.

Pros: Food and service is good, we like the dinner in our room. Staff are friendly
Cons: Overall is good as expected
8,3 Excellent
Pros: Food was outstanding. Having dinner served in your own room whilst enjoying a 5star quisine and service was a surprising and welcoming novelty. All staff were so kind and helpful. They went out of their way to make us wellcome and attended to our every need. Stunning views and a very good onsen with great toiletries. Superbly efficient operation.
Cons: We stayed in a traditional japaneese room, which appeals to families. It would have been nice to have an option of segregating a small part of the room with sliding doors for parents to stay awake in, while children to go to sleep earlier. This is something we found useful in other similar hotels, that we stayed at in Japan.
9,6 Excellent
Pros: Lovely, clean and comfortable room. Onsen and rotenburo were excellent! Dinner was served in the room course by course with fantastic explanation. Superb!
Cons: Breakfast restaurant was uninspired and staff were superficial.

6,7 Good
Pros: Fast internet Good breakfast Close location to bus station and JR station
Cons: It is a smoking hotel, so our room had a smokey smell permeating throughout our entire room (including bathroom, toilet, entryway, and room) from a previous guest, which made it hard to sleep. Be aware of this when booking the hotel. We tried to change rooms, but the hotel was full. When using the private onsen on the rooftop, another guest in another onsen also decided to smoke at the same time, which made it not very enjoyable.
2,0 Mediocre
Pros: The sea view rooms
Cons: - stated allergies in booking notes and upon arrival staff was shocked and denies receiving information. Took too much time to reconfirm this over and over. - breakfast and dinner was mediocre for price - breakfast on day 2 was served shellfish and although reconfirmed it wasn’t shellfish, turns out it was
10,0 Excellent
Pros: 10 mins walking distance to JR Beppu station. A mall across the street. No need to take the private onsen since the public onsen is really good.

Pros: Foods are excellent in a private space
Cons: Public bath is too small. Reserved private bath is not expensive but no vacancy. The idea to stay is for hot spring, but it is disappointing

Cons: None noted
7,5 Good
Pros: The hotel is clean. But the hotel decoration is a bit dated; I guess that's the reason they are able to keep the rate low.

8,3 Excellent
Pros: The food was excellent, fresh and many selections to choose from. The location is on the main road and convenient to a lot of the scenic areas. The roof-top onsen was very nice.
Cons: one of the staff members were not too friendly. All the rest were great. I don't know if he was having a bad day or it was because of my language barrier ? The onsen water temperature could've been a little hotter.

8,0 Excellent
Pros: The location is basically right next to the Beppu station and very easy access to the beachfront. We arrived very very late and the staff was friendly and checked us in quite quickly.
Cons: Not to lie we barely slept during the one night we stayed there. But for starters the building is old and walls are not for keeping noise out. Not able to pay with card was a bummer.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Showers were good. Kitchen to cook. Lockers to leave our bags before and after our stay.
Cons: The room was small, barely big enough to fit two futon beds. The room looked a bit unfinished.
9,0 Excellent
Pros: I had a very nice stay! The staff was super friendly and helpful and the location was perfect! Many people complain about the building being old but that was the best for me! It's full of personality. Definitely recommend staying!
Cons: Maybe that I could not pay with cash as I asked, but that is a problem with booking.com as it happened to me in other places too.
7,0 Good
Pros: The woman at the front desk was friendly and polite. There is luggage storage available before check-in and after check-out. The kitchen space was large and well-equipped. The storage space in the room was more than adequate. The location is very convenient and close to the station.
Cons: Figuring out how to turn on the main light in the room wasn't intuitive. There was no light switch. Instead there was a remote stored by the air conditioner/heater remote.
9,2 Excellent
Pros: Good place to stay if you take the single Japanese style room ! Very comfortable :) Staff was nice to help you as they could
2,0 Mediocre
Cons: The beds were uncomfortable. If someone in the upper beds has turned on the night light in the bed, it is bright in the whole room. The bed curtains are bad and do not shield the light. The street noise can be heard in the room.

Pros: It was a very interesting stay as I expected. Very old hotel but has a nice flair. They have onsen I enyojed. Offer also free try Wedding Kimono service that I discovered too late. Everything was old but clean. Could have stayed longer. Good locateted to the train station but if you want to go to central onsen area you need a bus.
Cons: Need renovation but not too much.

Pros: I like the privacy, it's not old, the lady just loves antiques. It feels like you can experience real Japanese Ryokan there. I arrived at 10am and auntie let me checked in early. She knows basic English enough for you to understand. She tries her best to help even she can't speak much English. If I come back to Beppu to experience snow in Mount Tsurumi, I'd stay there again for sure. Thanks auntie, I missed you already!

Pros: Clean, Nice Free Onsen, Great Location..

Pros: Right next to the train station. The owner grandma is super friendly and willing to help. The house and facilities are old but it offers a very unique “time travel” experience. You get a traditional style Japanese room with a private toilet at the price of a hostel bed. Highly recommend this stay if you are seeking a real Japanese home stay experience while on a low budget.
Cons: Nothing (but I would notice that this is a cost effective home stay and please don’t expect luxurious ryokan experience)

Cons: Facilities is a little bit old.

Cons: Nothing.
7,4 Good
Pros: The parking facilities and access was very good. The room was comfortable enough, although it was too expensive. Although we did not travel by train, persons who do will find that the train station is convenient to the hotel.
Cons: Going into the restroom facilities, the high step up is very dangerous. Many people who have a hard time walking can get hurt. The meal plates are very poor whether they are for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Large clear plates are necessary and important. The view from our hotel room was not the best. Of course, it was pouring down rain on the day we left, so it was nearly impossible to have a great view of the City.

Cons: Overall is good as expected

Pros: Lovely, clean and comfortable room. Onsen and rotenburo were excellent! Dinner was served in the room course by course with fantastic explanation. Superb!
Cons: Breakfast restaurant was uninspired and staff were superficial.
