Pros: Everything was great about this hostel : great staff, perfectly clean, right next to the station. the private room was like in a hotel. Big bonus for the common areas : a fully equipped kitchen, delicious free tea, and the owner actually lights a woodfire so it’s super cosy.

Pros: Very cosy, with welcoming staff
Cons: Quite expensive
10,0 Excellent
Pros: the place feels very warm: we stayed there in winter and have used the kitchen and dining space quite a lot. The kitchen is very well equipped, the dining space is quite relaxing, there is a fireplace to keep you warm. While we rented a car to get there (free parking on premise), it's also possible to travel by public transport: the hotel is walking distance from the station and there are buses to go to Mount Aso.
Cons: note that the check in time is 4pm and before that there would not be anyone to open the door
10,0 Excellent
Pros: This is the best backpacker I have ever seen. Extremely organized, clean, cozy and comfortable. The design is customer focus. Great location, just close to the bus and train station. Will surely come back and stay for few more days. Unfortunately, I could only book one night during Dec, 2019 due to their renovations.
Cons: Nothing dislike
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Very cozy. The host is very nice and gives useful tips for successful adventure (in a good English). Very close to the railroad station/bus stop. Comfy warm sleep.
Cons: The only possible problem is the reception opening times.

Pros: The service was fantastic, very polite and everyone always have a smiling face. Ryokan has traditional character, is comfy and the private onsen had a very nice setting. Food was delicious.
Cons: A little bit further away from town centre than expected, so difficult to do the bar hopping.
10,0 Excellent
Pros: We booked a maisonette and enjoyed a relaxing and luxurious space with the big sleeping area atop and the indoor and outdoor baths on the ground level. There is also a massage chair and tv in the change area. The outdoor bath, Mori no Yu with a standing bath was unique. The meals were very nice and we had our first taste of horse sashimi. Sadly, it tasted good. The staff were very nice and warm and the owner’s son personally advised us on the outdoor Onsens to visit for Onsen Hopping. The recommendations were good and the free bus service information he wrote on the map helped a lot. Overall, we had a memorable time in Kurokawa.
Cons: Nil
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Gorgeous ryokan with lovely staff. The private onsen in our room (maisonettes style) was perfect with varying depths that most other onsen don’t have! The public onsen is also very beautiful. The meals were delicious. Would highly recommend. Location is 10-15 minutes from the centre and a very easy walk.
7,9 Good
Pros: Stayed in a room with attached private onsen which was great ! Wonderful service. Very attentive. Special thanks to Momoyo. Dinner and breakfast was good

Pros: A secluded onsen ryokan which is quite difficult to locate without own car. However ryokan provides own transfer from local bus stop for those guests traveling by bus. The Onsen are extremely beautiful and the food are probably the best Japanese food we ever tasted. The staff, though could hardly speak English, are efficient and helpful.

10,0 Excellent
Pros: This is one of the best ryokans I’ve stayed in. Free shuttle service from bus stops, excellent communication and hospitality, amazing food and meals, the onsen...
10,0 Excellent
Pros: This is the place where you get to experience the real Japanese hospitality. The reception is exceptional. The driver picked us up from the bus stop and helped us move all luggage onto the trucks. It was raining quite a bit and he really put his guests first and didn't let us help. When we checked out, it was snowing and he kept us in the car and stood out there to help us stop the bus. Please note that the hotel has helped you manage all bus schedule with the proposed time of checking out. Everything is tailored and carefully arranaged such that you won't miss your schedule.
Cons: Upon dinner, some Chinese speaking staff may have been a bit pushy. We haven't finished some of our dishes but they got collected anyway. The conversation conducted may be a bit too fast as well. That was just one of the staff members though. All other Japanese speaking staff members are easily the friendliest I've ever met (Ref: I may already have visited over 15+ onsen hotels.)
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Staff has got high service-minded. Service is excellent. Definitely stay here again if I return to Kurokawa onsen.

8,3 Excellent
Pros: The staff were very kind and welcoming and the baths divine, both the private and outdoor public ones. The ryokan itself is very beautiful and atmospheric. The spectacular Japanese breakfast more than made up for missing dinner.
Cons: It was more difficult to get to the ryokan than we had anticipated but that was because we had been told we could get a train there. So we were a bit stressed when we got there. Because of the language barrier we hadn't pre-ordered a meal and the village did not have a great selection of restaurants.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Staff was very supportive and some of them spoke English well. The breakfast was very good and the outdoor onsen was very special. The build and room had the very traditional old Japanese building style. We found at 10 min walk a e-bicycle rental near Hanaasobi Rose Garden.
Cons: We travelled without a car, had not booked dinner in the hotel and were faced with almost all restaurants nearby closed in the evening (late October).
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Almost everything about the ryokan: the wooden house, lovely garden, the atmosphere, the outdoor onsen, professionalism of the people, the fire place, cleanless, quietness. And the coffee is really good, and they have nice refreshing drinks. We loved the breakfast, and the course meal was surprising, impressive for the eyes and absolutely delicious as we didn't know what to expect at all.
Cons: n.a.

There are quite a lot of stuff which you can rent for free or rent for certain price Huge space Futon is actually quite comfortable Very awesome xmas decorations. Can tell that the hosts made a lot of efforts Spacious free parking Good check-in experience Quite quiet except...
Cons: The late night 10pm and 630am radio announcement which woke us up...not sure where the sound comes from. Location: Can be hard to find and navigate at night. Best to have a car because it is not near any bus stop or station Other than that, the stay was pretty awesome

Pros: Private onsen was very good and breakfast spread was excellent. They have yukata rental and event space with table tennis and game stalls in the night. Wonderful view of the mountain range.
Cons: Room needs renovating and tatami floor was stained. Town area was very quiet with not many shops and gets dark at night but safe.

Pros: Wonderful and hearty breakfast. Very nice private family Ibsen.
7,0 Good
Pros: The bath on our patio...the meat at dinner
Cons: I left a pants and belt in the drawer under the bed, notified you, but you said you could not mail them to me in the U.S. or get them to Tokyo before I left today
7,1 Good
Pros: Staff was good Breakfast was delicious Dinner buffet selections was very good
Cons: You have a cross a road to the bathing area The bathing area was just ok Dinner is a little bit too early as they close 8pm & it was started 6pm, not really have much time to enjoy the dinner

5,1 Okay
Pros: The Onsen (spa) was quite nice. It was very quiet.
Cons: We took this hotel because everything else was booked out. We didn't know that it is a golf hotel and that it is very far from the actual town Aso. The staff had no clue about activities outside the hotel and could hardly speak any English. This hotel is good if you are above 50, have a car and want to play golf. Otherwise it's too far away from town and has very poor connection to public transport.
6,7 Good
Cons: Beds were very uncomfortable and hard to sleep on.
6,7 Good
Pros: A lot of parking space. Onsen is good
Cons: The resort needs renovation. Usually hotels in Japan are spotless but here is an exceptional case. When you switch the light you can see the tracks of towel on the mirror. Toilet stinks. The receptionist is polite (in a city way) ,which is okay, just the contrast is big compared with all receptionists I met in Kirishima and Miyazaki.
6,0 Good
Pros: Hotel located in a park like golf club. Quiet natural setting.
Cons: Hotel's dinner was buffet style. A rather high price vs overall quality. Rather strange elementary school style plates. Famed beef was a bit too well done and disappointing really as compared to a previous restaurant. Arrived at hotel about 1:15p. Attempted to check in and drop off bags before sightseeing. Were directed to an area to wait for someone to inform when check in was ready. After 20 minutes in uncomfortable chairs, further inquiry informed need to wait for another 90 minutes until 3:00pm. It's the official time and no one is allowed to check in before that time.... Poor communications at it's best.
8,8 Excellent
Pros: Love the onsen, especially the outdoor onsen, and the green surroundings (It has a golf course!)
Cons: A little away from everything so driving is necessary to get to shops, restaurants.
7,1 Good
Pros: The views is nice for photo taking.
Cons: The staff didn't give a correct information on the Onsen facilities and the timing of the opening. We need to find out ourselves.
6,3 Good
Pros: Very nice onsen Good breakfast with beautiful view Very nice staff Comfortable beds
Cons: Bathroom in the room was very old, very bad humid smell. We have decided not to use it and used the onsen instead
9,2 Excellent
Cons: Hot spring is not clean. There are bugs inside.
7,1 Good
Pros: The dinner is really amazing. It worth the money.
Cons: The room is too small. Only one staff can communicate in English. The pajama for us going to the hot spring is really terrible. It is a blouse and trouser suit look like what a workman worn. Only one size is offered despite different size of customers. Even worse, only one suit is offered for each hotel customer. We are not allowed to replace a clean one with our dirty one on hand.
6,7 Good
Pros: The onsen is great, rooms are spacious, the breakfast buffet with panoramic view on the caldera is very nice. Also, the hotel is located quite close to the road up to the crater of the volcano.
Cons: The staff at the reception weren't as friendly as we are used to in Japan. In fact, they came across as a bit arrogant. Only the people working in the restaurant and cleaning were friendly and polite. Also, there was a distinct seventies vibe in the building. Not particularly homy. As I read later on Tripadvisor, one of the guests described it as 'slightly institutional'. Maybe that's the right description for this hotel.

Pros: Good location and rooms with good view. Dinner and Breakfast are good. Great Onsen. And a nice ice cream cafe just right next to hotel building
Cons: Room is a bit dated but still ok
10,0 Excellent
Pros: Old school feel with traditional Japanese style room. The onsen is a great way to unwind in the evening or first thing in the morning. Friendly English speaking staff. Comfortable and spacious room. Nice views if you choose a mountain view room. Short walk into town for a variety of local restaurants and bars. The Zen shop and cafe next door has great ice cream!
Cons: Remembering to grab the shampoo, body wash etc on the way in. There is none in the room as seems usual in Japanese accommodation

7,1 Good
Pros: Good location for Aso volcano
Cons: It was a bit dated, in need of decorating. It was quite noisy.
5,0 Okay
Pros: Nice staff, changed room without hesitation after some issues mentioned.
Cons: The tidiness. There were hairs everywhere in the bathroom and stains all over the carpet and sofa. The smell in the bathroom was pretty bad.
6,7 Good
Pros: Cool room, little far from the station but all the hotels are quite far from the station. Bathroom is from nineties and so is the hotel but it was comfortable. The restaurant is very nice aswel for dinner as for breakfast!
Cons: Aso is a tourist trap, there are like three busses in a whole day that do return to kumamoto so people tend to stay in aso itself for longer hikes which drives the prices of these hotels way up because they can!
4,2 Okay
Cons: The hotel is a bit far from the JR station and there is no shuttle offered by the hotel. For travelers who are taking public transport, it is not so convenient. The onsen is small and lack of maintenance. There isn't much choice of restaurant in the hotel or around the hotel. We have to stick with the buffet dinner in the hotel; and the food does not value for the money we paid.
3,0 Mediocre
Cons: No shuttle service. No English explanation on anything, you supposed to guess what’s where and how to get there. Poor customer experience in general. Especially when I compare it to other spa resorts of the same level of stars and price I had in Japan.
8,0 Excellent
Pros: Good location... Clean
