Definitely, the private garden with animals (there is a lovely deer, even). This was the best part of the hostel, there are two tables outside where one can enjoy dinner, but for some reason all the guests preferred to eat inside....maybe they were not aware of it. We had the family room with direct access to the garden (that's how we discovered it).
Very very old house, electrics scarily old, common facilities also old. The floor of our family room was not straight and you must sleep with an angle. Funny for a while. If renovated with taste, this house has potential to become one of the best hostel of New Zealand. At the moment it is an old lady which needs artificial joint implants.

German owner bake sourdough bread for breakfast. It reminded me my stay in Germany. Toast, cereals, coffee and tea provided. Location is handy to city. Big size room for family. I loved it
Friday night and Saturday night can be very noisy until very late night. Hard to go sleep a bit. Recommend to set limit time staying common area

Best breakfast selection in Hostels around the North Island so far. Super nice staff and well equipped kitchen. Quiet and Relaxed atmosphere, just like the town itself. It`s close to town and supermarkets; fast and reliable Internet. All in all in my Top 2 hostels so far.. perfect stay after outdoor adventures (Whanganui River Tour, Hikes.. )
