Réunion generally follows French driving laws. They drive on the right and the blood alcohol limit is 0.05%. Even with their storm drains, heavy rains can cause landslides that lead to road closures during cyclone season. This is especially true on the island's mountain roads. Outside of these situations, driving conditions in Réunion are usually very good and you'll find driving along the coastal motorways easy. It can get quite busy in the summer months. You may find that you prefer to park on the outskirts of Saint-Denis, as this is where traffic will be busiest. There'll usually be more manual vehicles available, so if you want an automatic, book well in advance.

You'll usually need to be at least 21 years old to book car hire in Réunion. Some Réunion car hire companies will also charge a 'young drivers fee' to drivers under 25. Due to Réunion's small size and varied geography, speed limits can change quickly, so always keep a close watch for signs. Additionally, you should be prepared to drive below the speed limit in heavy rain.
