Top Tips for Hiring a Convertible Car in Oxford

  • One of the UK’s most culturally-iconic cities, Oxford and its Medieval architecture awaits you with lush greenery, 38 high-end colleges, movie set backgrounds, and the famous 12th-century university in the centre. Oxford convertible car hire is a refined and luxurious way to take in your surroundings. Whether staying local or up for some road-tripping fun, hiring a car will allow you to easily visit the Blenheim Palace, head east to Chiltern Hills for magnificent vistas or take a trip to Stratford-upon-Avon and visit the home of William Shakespeare.
  • When looking for convertible cars to hire in Oxford, you will find only select car hire companies carry stock. A good place to hire a convertible car in Oxford would be the closest airport, which is London Heathrow. It's about an hour away by car along the M40 motorway and has an extensive range of car hire companies, like Europcar and Enterprise. You can find them at Terminal 1 at Arrivals on the ground floor. If you would like to hire a convertible car in Oxford city, there is a branch of Europcar in Little Mead Business Park.
  • Driving your convertible car in Oxford will be a delight as the roads are in great condition and quite wide just outside the inner city. The motorway most used to get in and out of Oxford is the M40. A convertible may make you feel free, but seat belts are still mandatory for all passengers. Stick to the speed limit, particularly in the inner city areas, as there are many student pedestrians. You can drive up to 30 mph (48 km) around built-up areas. 60 mph (96 km) is often the maximum speed outside urban areas, and when you hit the motorways, you can drive up to 70 mph (112 km).
  • When you hire a convertible car in Oxford, the potentially gloomy weather will be your biggest challenge. Summer will hopefully bless you with sunny days, but keep an eye on weather reports for quick showers, which may ruin a drive. Driving in the inner city can also be challenging, as roads tend to be narrower, so it's best to avoid it when possible. Pedestrians own the streets, and with all the colleges, you will find the inner-city is far friendly for bicycles and mopeds. Some of the larger roads experience congestion, and you should avoid weekday rush hours if possible. Peak times are usually from 6 am to 9 am and from 4 pm to 6 pm. Please be on the lookout for intoxicated students stepping into the road at night. They are used to having right-of-way, and a night out could lead to some jaywalking.

FAQs About Hiring a Convertible Car in Oxford

  • Where can I find Oxford convertible car hire companies?

Convertible car hire is slightly rarer than regular sedans or compact cars, and getting one may require an advanced booking. If you cannot get one from a local car hire company, it would be best to book it at Heathrow Airport, where there is an extensive car hire centre.

  • What is the most reliable convertible car to hire in Oxford?

With Oxford convertible car hire, you will have less selection than, for instance, luxury cars. Still, you will be guaranteed a high-end, good-looking, pristine vehicle. One of the most popular convertibles cars you can hire in Oxford is the timelessly classy Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet. This dynamic car is filled with energy and is perfect regardless of your age or taste.

  • Where should I park my convertible hire car in Oxford?

If you're visiting Oxford, it's ideal to park at your accommodation for vehicle security. You can find parking in town, but it may not be the most affordable. Oxford University does have a large car park which is free on weekends. The Westgate Oxford Car Park on Thames Street also stays open 24 hours a day. Alternatively, look for the 24-hour Worcester Street Car Park.

  • How does KAYAK find such low convertible car hire prices?

KAYAK compares convertible car hire prices from all major car hire companies such as Thrifty, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, Payless and more to find you the best deal.

The car was dirty with bald tires. It didn’t feel safe. I was also charged many fees that were not disclosed when I initially booked this car with kayak. Very unsatisfied.
