If you’re planning to drive alone or with your partner around Nantucket, a compact mid-size, fuel-efficient car is preferable. Privately owned roads and some attractions areas located some distance away from the town, such as Siasconset Quaint Fishing and Cottage and the Bluff Walk, may need a more powerful car, such as 4WD.
The maximum speed limit is around 30mph in most parts of Nantucket town but drops to 25mph in thickly settled residential areas and business centers. Other areas such as Milestone Road and Polpis Road have a speed limit of 35mph, while other regions like Monomoy Road have a speed limit of 30mph. Nantucket’s transport department has invested in road signposts across all major roads to enhance traffic safety, so pay careful attention to signs to avoid accidents. Nantucket authorities are strict with their traffic regulations. Therefore, we advise adhering to traffic guidelines at all times.
Free public parking slots in Nantucket are available at Washington Street, Valet Parking of America at Broad Street, and Town Lot. There are NRTA Park & Ride Lots at three locations, along Surfside Road, 5 Dave Street, and 27 Fairgrounds Road. Parking at Hy-Line will cost you about $15 per day.

Thrifty was not located where advertised. Advertised that it was at the airport, NOT TRUE. Agency is located about 1 mile away from airport. I had to get a ride to pick up carand was dropped off at airport where agency was supposed to be and isn't. Had to wait till manager could come and pick me up. Very inconvenient.2,0 Poor

Cons:
Rental was for a commercial van and it was a bait and switch situation - instead of the van the only available vehicle was a Penske box truck. Vehicle had more than 100,000 miles, reeked of smoke and felt dangerous to drive.4,0 Mediocre

Cons:
I searched for a car rental pickup in Hyannis, MA. The search setting apparently also included rentals in Nantucket. So when I arrived to pick up the car, the car was not available in Hyannis. When I inquired, I learned my car rental pickup had been booked for Nantucket, a location I could not even get to without taking a ferry. Furthermore, my drop-off location was in NJ. So the notion that I was allowed to pickup a car on an island to be dropped off in NJ is absurd. This type of booking should not be allowed to even take place. Who would ever rent a car in Nantucket, pay to put a rental car on a ferry, then drop it off on the mainland. You need to put in booking restrictions against this type of reservation, so this does not occur in the future.2,0 Poor

Pros:
New, very comfortable car. Pleasant staff; easy pickup and drop-off.Cons:
I expected it to be expensive, and it was ($112/day for a midsize), but probably less than other rentals on the island.9,6 Wonderful

Pros:
Hertz was great, very friendly and helpful.Cons:
carrentals.com who co-booked the rental with Kayak, did not provide Hertz with my contact information. This caused confusion when they tried to call me to tell me the location I had booked the car was closed and to head to a different location. I could not be reached so I showed up at the closed location and had to then catch a cab across town to the open location.2 locations in Nantucket
