KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Haarlem

  • Booking with a company offering car hire in Haarlem may be a great option for those looking to save money on their trip to the Netherlands. It is often cheaper to pick up your vehicle in Haarlem instead. One of the best ways to use your Haarlem hire car is to take it out of the city. The beach town of Zandvoort is only 15 minutes away and with a car, you won't need to worry about taking all of your beach gear onto the train. If you can take your car across the border, Brussels is about 2 h 30 min away, and you can make it a full-day drive by stopping in Utrecht and Antwerp along the way.
  • If you're flying in, it's often more convenient to pick up your car at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS). You can find a number of international car hire companies in Schiphol Plaza. This is the main area in the centre of the airport. If you're returning your car to the airport, take the A4 towards the airport, and you'll find signs directing you to Car Rental. You'll often need to make the return with a full tank of fuel, but luckily there is a station at the airport you can use.
  • Firstly, when using car hire in Haarlem, it's important to remember to drive on the right-hand side of the road. This also means that you should keep right unless you're overtaking. While Haarlem doesn't have trams, if you plan on driving to Amsterdam or other cities in the Netherlands with trams, you may need to make some adjustments. Trams usually have right of way, and they may sometimes stop to let passengers on or off (onto the road). Be ready to slow down and wait for them
  • Rush hour can be quite intense in Haarlem and traffic jams can delay your travel time significantly. If possible, avoid using your Haarlem car hire between 07:00 and 09:00, and between 16:00 and 18:00. Otherwise, factor in extra time for your trip. You can also switch to public transport if you need to travel during these times, but bear in mind that they will be crowded.
  • Small hire cars in Haarlem are around 38% cheaper than other car types, on average

  • What type of car is recommended for driving in Haarlem?

What type of vehicle you get when using car hire in Haarlem will depend on what you plan to do with it. If you plan on just driving in the city, an economy, or even a mini will be most useful. A smaller car will make it easier to find parking spaces. If you have a large group or are planning on doing activities that require a lot of gear, you may prefer a larger Haarlem hire car.

  • What's the speed limit in Haarlem?

Unless otherwise stated, in cities, the speed limit is usually 50 km/h (31 mph). Keep an eye out for signs, as in the city centre this can drop to 30 km/h (19 mph). The speed limit on motorways during the day (06:00 to 19:00) is generally 100 km/h (62 mph) and 130 km/h (80 mph) in the evenings (19:00 to 06:00). Don't forget that speed signs will be posted in kilometres, but this will match the speedometer in your vehicle.

  • Where are the best places to park in Haarlem?

You can sometimes find free parking on the edge of Haarlem's city centre. Check the Schalkwijk district and the Kennemer Plein. If you want to park in the city centre, you'll likely need to pay, and the rates will vary depending on the area. Parking is usually cheaper (around half the price) overnight rather than during the day. The ParkBee De Koepel and Jaanstrat are useful covered parking spots close to the city centre, and spaces here can be booked in advance online.

Pick up was easy. Free upgrade. The car was not explained to us and the manual was in Dutch so we couldn’t get answers on dashboard alarm. Tried calling Hertz and no one picked up. Drop off… no one there, just key drop. Went inside and was told attendant was on break “ just drop keys off”
