Grenoble car hire

The type of car you should hire during your stay in Grenoble depends heavily on the time of the year and where you plan on driving. If you are planning on staying around the town itself, then a compact car is ideal as it makes it easier to navigate and to find car parking, but if you’re heading to the ski slopes, then a 4x4 car is what you need.

As for the roads surrounding the city, such as the E73 and the E712, the speed limit is between 43mph and 55mph.

While parking is prohibited in the Old Grenoble part of the city centre, you will generally find street parking available right outside that area and you will be able to reach the historic city centre in just a few minutes' walk. You will need to pay an hourly fee from Monday to Saturday between the hours of 9:00 and 15:00. The hourly cost is typically between around €1.50 (£1.30) and €2.50 (£2.20) depending on the zone, and there is a time limit of 2h 30min. If you need to make a quick stop, you can get a free 20-minute parking ticket. Free street parking is available on most streets located south of Boulevard Marechal Foch and west of Rue Abbe Gregoire.
