If you're planning to take road trips outside the town, though, opt for something more versatile like an SUV to deal with the different types of roads you'll encounter. Potholes are common, as are loose gravel surfaces caused by rockfalls. If you're taking a road trip through a rural area, a 4x4 is recommended.

You can drive at 50 km/h (around 30 mph) in built-up urban areas, and at 90 km/h (about 56 mph) on the highways that serve the town. Pay attention all the time, however, as the traffic police are fond of speed trapping just after signs that reduce the speed limit and will issue spot fines.

It's not a bad idea to buy a parking card, which you can get from one of the many peripteros (parking kiosks). The town also has a two parking lots that cost around €3 (£2.60) – Manolis Parking Lot and the Marina of Agios Nikolaos. These are centrally placed, allowing you to comfortably walk to the town's beaches and other attractions. You can also usually find free parking at Akti Atlantidos near the Kritsa Junction.
