Bern is the capital of Switzerland, its sandstone old town wrapped in a loop of the green River Aare and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Six kilometers of covered arcades shelter shops and cafés along the medieval lanes, the old Zytglogge clock has chimed since the Middle Ages, and brown bears roam a riverside park below the cathedral terrace. Swimmers float down the swift, clear Aare through the middle of town each summer.
