Top tips for hiring a car at Santander Airport

  • Car hire at Santander Airport (SDR) gives you the ideal opportunity to explore this seaside city on your own steam, without having to rely on the local public transport system. Buses are the main mode of transport in Santander and are subject to roughly 15min intervals, with regular stops en route to offload other passengers. Having a hire car means bypassing any of the wait times and being able to travel to any destination you want when you want to.
  • Before leaving the parking garage with your car hire at Santander Airport, make sure you go around the car and take note of any dents, scratches or potential issues and mark them down on your car hire agreement to avoid extra charges when returning the vehicle. Also, check the boot of the car to ensure there is a wheel wrench, a jack for the car, a hazard sign and a spare tyre. These items are usually supplied, but with high volumes of hire cars being processed, sometimes things are missed.
  • Santander is a seaside city with smaller roads than most major cities. These roads can accommodate cars of all sizes, but smaller cars tend to be easier to navigate and find parking for. Smaller cars are also more fuel efficient and suit budget travellers. There are around five car hire companies at Santander Airport, and all of them offer plenty of compact and economy car choices.
  • You'll want to avoid hiring a car at Santander Airport from December through to February. These are the coldest and most rainy months of the year and not the best time to be out on the roads. If you're in the city during these months, public transport is less busy and they're equipped with adequate heating. If you do need to hire a car during these months, you'll at least get some of the cheaper rates of the year.
  • Book your car hire at Santander Airport at least 4 weeks before your trip in order to get a below-average price

FAQs about hiring a car at Santander Airport

  • Where are the Santander Airport car hire desks located?

Santander Airport is home to around five car hire companies operating out of the airport every day, and the company desks are located in the main arrivals hall and inside the luggage claim area. AVIS and Budget are located on the far left, inside the luggage claim area, while Europcar and Enterprise are to the left of the exit as you leave luggage claim. Hertz and OK are on the right as you walk into the arrivals hall from luggage claim, and SIXT is located right across the hall, close to the exit gates.

  • What amenities does the Santander Airport car hire centre have?

Santander Airport doesn't have a dedicated car hire centre and instead has companies operating out of the airport and from a parking garage outside. You will have access to the airport amenities when picking up your car hire at Santander Airport, which include both standard and accessible toilets, shops and restaurants. If you need to grab a bite to eat or use the restroom before driving out, we suggest doing so at the airport. Once you've filled out your forms, you'll be escorted to the parking garage for vehicle inspection and be given the car keys.

  • What are the requirements for hiring a car at Santander Airport?

The majority of car hire companies at the airport have a minimum age of 21, while others require you to be at least 23. If you're younger than 25, companies tend to add an extra surcharge to your car hire, for being a young driver. You must have a valid licence that's at least a year old. You'll be asked for a valid form of ID, usually your passport, and you must present a valid credit card in your name. If the booking has been paid for online, the credit card and the owner must be present when collecting the vehicle.

  • Which car hire companies will pick you up at Santander Airport?

Car hire companies that offer shuttle or pick-up services from Santander Airport to off-airport locations include Ace, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Europcar, Goldcar Rental SP, Hertz, and keddy by Europcar.

I was forced to take additional insurance for the car, with rather unclear justification. Very long process and queue to take and give back the car. Was accused of not having filled the tank, which I had done. Uneasy to find the office, which is located outside the airport premices.
