Top tips for hiring a car at Phuket Airport

  • If you’re looking at car hire at Phuket City Airport, you’ll find that it’s very simple to locate the car hire desks in the airport. Once you’ve gone through passport control and collected your baggage, you’ll find the car hire desks situated in the Public Zone of International Terminal 1, which is on the first floor. There are also car hire desks in Domestic Terminal D on the same floor. All major car hire companies are found here, with their counters conveniently grouped together and visibly signposted.
  • Phuket City Airport car hire is a great way to get around and explore this stunning island, especially if you want to visit the vast coastlines and beautiful beaches. Phuket city has a decent public transportation system, with cheap buses and tuk-tuk taxis dominating the roads. However, from the airport itself, there is only an airport bus that departs every hour for the city centre and costs around 170 THB (3.75 GBP). If you’re looking to get on your way and travel elsewhere, it’s much better to hire a car as you can fit in all the local areas you want to visit without having to rely on bus schedules.
  • Once you’ve finalised the rental agreement and collected your car, you can get your trip underway and start exploring what Phuket has to offer. From Phuket City Airport, you have a few convenient road networks connecting you to the city and other surrounding areas popular with tourists. It’s important to know that the airport is situated approximately 20 miles from Phuket city, which is around a 45min drive via Route 4031 and 402 motorways. Most of Phuket’s famous beaches are based in the south, so driving from the airport in the north is the best option, with places like Pa Tong Beach accessible in under 1h via the coastal roads, Route 4031 and then 4030. Moreover, you can reach Kata and Karon Beach in around the same time, via Route 402 and 4024, respectively.
  • When it comes to car hire at Phuket City Airport, it’s important to make a note of your car hire company’s operating hours. Some are open 24h, whilst others have different hours and close as early as 21:00, so double-check this when booking as it may affect the return of the vehicle. On occasion, you will be asked to confirm a convenient return time when finalising your reservation, so it’s recommended to put the latest hour possible so you can take advantage of the car for the whole day and if it’s outside office hours, the company can include it in their rate. You can find rates (including late return policies) through KAYAK.
  • Book your car hire at Phuket Airport at least 6 days before your trip in order to get a below-average price

FAQs about hiring a car at Phuket Airport

  • What documents do I need to provide to hire a car at Phuket Airport?

If you’re planning to hire a car at Phuket City Airport, you will need to ensure you have the right documentation with you. You must provide your booking confirmation, an official form of photographic identification such as your passport and a valid driving licence. Furthermore, an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) must accompany your driving licence, you can apply for these at your local post office in the UK. You will need a credit card to process the deposit and payment. Moreover, you must be at least 21 years of age to hire a car in Thailand.

  • Which car hire company is the easiest at Phuket Airport?

There are several highly regarded car hire companies at Phuket Airport, with Budget and Europcar both having solid customer ratings. However, local company Thai Rent a Car has excellent customer service ratings, with a swift process and a cheap rate. They are fondly thought of by travellers, especially those on a budget, so it’s worth checking out their rates and availability through KAYAK.

  • What types of vehicles are recommended to hire at Phuket Airport?

For car hire at Phuket City Airport, we recommend hiring small and compact cars that you can drive around in easily, holding four passengers with enough space for your luggage. These vehicles are perfect for Phuket’s tight roads and are also the cheapest vehicles to hire. There is an array of different models available, so you’re spoilt for choice.

  • Which car hire companies will pick you up at Phuket Airport?

Car hire companies that offer shuttle or pick-up services from Phuket Airport to off-airport locations include Avis, Bizcar Rental, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, keddy by Europcar, National, Sixt, Thai Rent, and Thrifty.
