KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Suva

  • If you're hiring a vehicle in Suva for the first time, it is essential to check if you meet the eligibility requirements. You'll typically need to provide a full government-issued driving licence written in English. If you come from a non-English speaking country, you will need to present an international driving permit (IDP) along with your driving licence. You can get this document from your home country before travelling to Suva. Also, some Suva car hire providers may require you to be at least 25 years old, with additional restrictions and fees for younger drivers.
  • Cheap car hire in Suva allows you the freedom to plan thrilling road trips out of the city. Most Suva car hire companies allow you to drive out of the city to explore other gems in Fiji. However, this option has additional restrictions, such as extra fees, prohibited areas and distance restrictions. It's essential to confirm any limits, charges or requirements with the car hire provider upfront. Some exciting road trips from Suva include exploring lovely scenery on the Rakiraki Drive and immersing in Fiji's rich heritage on the Sigatoka Sand Dunes Drive.
  • Before hitting the road with your Suva hire car, it's essential to familiarise yourself with the traffic laws in the city for a hassle-free experience. First, like in Australia, traffic in Suva moves on the left side of the road, so you won't have difficulty fitting in and cruising like a local. But if you come from a country that drives on the right side of the road, you should be extra cautious, especially when shifting lanes or making turns. Also, all vehicle occupants must wear seat belts, and kids under five must be restrained in a child safety seat.
  • Suva is the capital of Fiji and its largest city. Car hire in Suva can open up the whole island of Viti Levu to you, allowing you to explore Natadola Beach, the tourist hub of Nadi, inland delights like Wainuta Falls and nature reserves like Koroyanitu National Park in your own time. Suva is also the commercial hub of Fiji, so if you’re there on business, Suva car hire is a practical option that allows you to take full control of your schedule.
  • Suva-Nausori Airport (SUV), also known as Luvuluvu, is situated around 25 km northeast of central Suva. The airport is connected to Suva by Kings Road, which can get you into town in around 30-40min. You will find companies like Avis, Budget and Hertz in the arrivals area of the single terminal building. However, if you're planning on booking your car hire in Suva, remember that airport vehicles often book out in advance, so it’s worth pre-booking online.
  • Since it’s the commercial hub of Fiji, traffic can get quite congested in Suva, with peaks at around 08:00 and 17:00 on weekdays. It also rains a lot, generally in small, passing showers. So, you may go out on a sunny morning and be hit with a downpour later in the day. It’s important to slow down to ensure you can brake and turn corners safely in wet conditions.
  • In Suva, and on the winding roads that connect the nation’s capital to the other villages and towns of Viti Levu, you will often see stray dogs and locals hanging out along the roadways. Keep an eye out and watch your speed to ensure you’re able to react quickly. Queens Road and Kings Road will take you around the perimeter of the island. Though the road quality is good in most places, it’s important to keep an eye out for potholes, particularly after heavy rainfall.
  • Book your car hire in Suva at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Standard car hire in Suva are around 23% cheaper than other car types, on average

FAQs about hiring a car in Suva

  • What type of car is recommended for driving in Suva?

Whether you’ll be sticking to the city limits of Suva or venturing out to Pacific Harbour, Nadi, Lautoka and other beautiful regions of Fiji, a compact car should be all you need. Compact vehicles are ideal if you’re looking for cheap Suva car hire, and they’re also easy to park and manoeuvre. If you’ll be bringing your own gear for watersports or travelling in a large group, it’s worth upgrading your car hire in Suva to an SUV. This will give you plenty of legroom, roof racks and extra space for bags and equipment.

  • What’s the speed limit in Suva?

Within the city limits of Suva and in all residential areas of Fiji, the speed limit is 50 km/h unless otherwise signed. The maximum speed limits you’ll find on roads like Kings Road and Queen Road, which connect the coastal towns and villages of Viti Levu, is 80 km/h. However, there are many winding sections and tight turns on these roads, so keep an eye out for speed signs and always reduce your speed when navigating twisting roads and sections with potholes or other hazards.

  • Where are the best places to park in Suva?

You can expect to pay for parking in most parts of Suva, though some shopping centres, like Suva Central and Tappoo City, do offer free parking for the first hour. But it's always vital to check with your provider about their payment policy.

  • What insurance do I need to get a hire car in Suva?

We recommend getting insurance, especially if you’re booking cheap car hire in Suva. Although third-party insurance is mandatory for hired cars in Suva, it won't cover you or potential damages to your hired car. So, incur the surcharge and get extra insurance from your car hire provider to enjoy complete protection when driving in Suva.

Not much to like. I overpaid for a poor quailing rental because not enough selections were available. The steering wheel on the vehicle shook every time I braked. Made me fairly nervous while driving so I had to be extra cautious. For the amount of money paid for the rental, it almost felt like a scam.
