KAYAK
The car was in terrible shape. It needs new shock absorbers and we were concerned that the struts were about to go. We were afraid to use it as much as we had wanted to over concerns that it would break down.

The customer service was great. I think the young lady that helped me name was Evelyn. She was very nice and professional. She answered my questions. The rental process was easy. The only improvement would be to improve maintenance on the vehicles. The wiper blades were worn out. This can be dangerous when it rains and driving in St. Thomas.

Flight at 9:45 am, office opens at 8 am. Not convenient.

Pros:

The fact that I got a car. The drop off was much smoother than pick up, staff who drove us to the airport for our departure was very nice.

Cons:

We showed up with lots of people waiting for cars after never receiving a shuttle ride from the airport as advertised. We then waited outside for an hour to receive a dirty car that was apparently the last one they had available. We had rented out a truck or similar car, however we’re told they do not offer that vehicle ever (we did see a truck parked in the lot). We received a dirty van that was very beat up and went on our way just happy to have received a car.

Pros:

Sadly, nothing. There was no car available for us as promised in our reservation. Thrifty Car Rental St John sayid that third party internet trial companies promise rental cars that they don’t actually have, so we were left high and dry. Horrible.

Cons:

Thrifty never came to the airport to get us. They barely answered the phone and when they did they put us in hold and never re-answered the phone. After over an hour waiting we had to get a cab to the off airport site, and only then did they tell us that our third party “reservation” was not valid in their eyes. Thankfully Budget Rental Car in the airport had a last minute cancellation that we were able to get there...and after I got back to the airport—again on my own—was able to get that car and continue with my vacation. Avoid off-airport companies like this one!

Absolutely nothing.

Cons:

The sent an email two hours before, and said they didn’t have a vehicle and was stranded on island with all rental cars sold out.

Open-air all-terrain

KAYAK
The car had dents outside, which is acceptable on an island. Inside it was terrible, looked like a 5+ year old car which was never cleaned ever. The car squealed downhill (50% of roads on Tortola). After a quick check we learned that all for brakepads where gone. Front brake discs where weavy. Rear discs corroded. Overall, minimal and unreliable brakes in a 7 seater on a hilly island. Avis is on my blacklist from now on.
