Insights shared by verified travellers who hired a car in Salt Lake City
Verified travelerDec 2025
Don’t be scared to use off site rental companies like Fox excellent experience
StevenFeb 2026
Rent from a company that you can go right to your car and not go to the counter for the same nonsense you fill in online
Verified travelerJan 2026
Just check closing time before you book. SLC has many things closed on Sunday.
Verified travelerSept 2025
Get something a decent size. It’s a long way to anywhere.
KirstenJul 2025
Do not use a third party vendor, book with the rental car company and don’t trust that the shuttle will come to take you to an off site rental desk. Rent from a company that is at the airport.
KenApr 2025
Find a rental company that’s at the airport itself. Not worth the savings for the inconvenience of off airport rentals.
LaDawnDec 2024
Check to make sure the vehicles is fully functioning and if you notice anything wrong, tell them immediately or they may claim that you damaged the vehicle. I had a slow leak in a tire which I just kept filling because it was Christmas and I had shopping to do, but when I took it back they tried to claim that I needed to fix the tire. I pushed back and to their credit they relented, so all is well. But be ready for anything!
Verified travelerJan 2025
Go with a rental car company that has cars on site. The shuttles to the off site rentals have long wait times and the off site locations are about 15-20 minutes away.
Verified travelerDec 2024
Be sure you book a car that's at least all-wheel drive because you can't go up big cottonwood canyon or Little cottonwood canyon without it.
Verified travelerFeb 2025
Bring your own insurance cert if you're already covered... know the rules about snow tire requirements if accessing the ski resorts.
DoraOct 2024
Again would have loved to have known that the agency we rented from was off site from the airport, and had an on call pick up shuttle so when we landed we could have called them.
SergioOct 2024
Be aware that if you are going to the mountains ask for winter tires when renting.
Mary BethNov 2024
Be sure to know that their rental counter closes earlier than the others, 8pm.
Verified travelerOct 2024
May have more success renting in the city, or off airport.
Verified travelerSept 2024
Avoid Easirent at all costs, reserve well in advance at reliable locations at the airport that don't require a shuttle to and from the car rental place.
DJul 2024
We had a Honda CRV that was very comfortable and fun to drive. We happen to be in Moab during a flash flood. Luckily, there was no hail damage to vehicle, and we weren’t caught in the flood. But that might be something to ask about insurance wise.
Verified travelerAug 2024
Go direct with someone at the airport like enterprise or Alamo to avoid long delays.
JenaroJul 2024
Pay attention to the road signs. The roads are a bit different than other places.
Verified travelerJul 2024
Look SPECIFICALLY for a rental agency on-airport - the off-airport companies are not franchises and provide questionable service.
Verified travelerMar 2024
The car rental places that are at the airport or actually basically in the terminal so it’s probably worth it to just go with one of those

Check of the lights are working and check the tire pressure as well before leaving the parking lot.

If you can afford it, stay with the bigger agencies who are on-airport.

Very easy to get around. I am from a small city in Maine, we are not populated like this area. Never felt overwhelmed.
Verified travelerDec 2023
If you are in a time crunch, make sure you book onsite airport rentals- the shuttles aren’t super reliable.
Verified travelerFeb 2024
Google maps took us to another location to drop off the car. Give yourself extra time.

Did NOT have a Chevy Traverse available as per requested. Car rented was not available until washed. Had to wait additional time. Shuttle was immediately available at airport. Appreciate that service!

Driving in Salt Lake City is generally good. At least during the hours I traveled, traffic was light and signage was good.
Verified travelerOct 2023
No tips, they were excellent.
Verified travelerSept 2023
take into account that from the arrival hall, it is a 10 min walk to the shuttle bus location (representatives of other brands are willing to give directions to the shuttlestop) In total it took us 1 hour from the arrival hall until drive away.
Verified travelerSept 2023
There are many options. If you choose to use an "off airport" rental, you may receive an older vehicle with excessive mileage.
Verified travelerOct 2023
Make sure your car rental company has 24 hour service if your flight is either late or early.
ArlinaAug 2023
If driving long distances, check tire pressure, gas, and use Google maps. Maps helps to find alternatives if there is traffic. Take stops along the way (great signs for rest stops and they have bathrooms) and watch out for the trucks, as sometimes they swerve into your lane. There are also several winding roads and many don't have street lights so don't let speedsters intimidate you, drive safe and alert.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Ace rental and Rugged Rental are good off airport choices for Off-road SUVs and ski vehicles when visiting the SLC area.

Lots of good roads in SLC! Have your maps app up and ready!

KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Salt Lake City

  • Planning on picking up a hire car after landing at Salt Lake City International Airport? Getting to the hire car center is simple; just exit the main terminal and head to the parking garage across from it -- you will find the hire car counters on the ground floor.
  • Visitors to Salt Lake City will rejoice to hear that Salt Lake City does not suffer from severe rush hour as is so typical in other cities. However, while congestion may not be on the same level as the likes of New York City or Dallas, traffic does still slow from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. In particular, I-15 can get backed up during the peak of rush hour.
  • One of the major advantages of renting a car in Salt Lake City is that the whole city becomes readily accessible. For example, perhaps you would like to catch a Utah Jazz game at Vivint Smart Home Arena. You could take public transportation to the arena, but you will find that a car is a much more convenient way of getting there, especially when you take getting back home after the game into consideration.
  • Utah is an absolute utopia for winter sports, thanks to its world-class snow. However, its snow is both a blessing and a curse for visitors to Utah, as many of them may not be used to driving on snowy or icy roads. Some tips for driving in the snow include: don’t power up hills, avoid stopping on hills, drive slowly, and keep a safe distance from the cars in front of you.
  • 25% of our users found a car hire in Salt Lake City for R972 or less
  • Large hire cars in Salt Lake City are around 51% cheaper than other car types, on average

They oversold their vehicles as left me without a car, had to stay in the city for another day, come back to the airport the next day and rent a car from National, also had to get another hotel room by the rental location at Salt Lake City airport due to not being able to drive to the city my hotel was in. Total experience was horrible.

Our pickup time was at 10am and we did not receive a car in SLC until 3:30pm. This caused us to have quite a bit of inconvenience in having to leave the AVIS rental location and wait until they called us later in the day when a car was ready. While we received a nice rental vehicle, it wasn’t overly clean. The dropoff in Omaha went smoothly.

Convenient location, great car, very clean. Pick up can be more smooth. Not sure why it took so long to enter my details in the computer (since I already entered them online). Took 15 minutes to get my drivers license registered, fill out forms, texting on cellphone, scanning QR codes. Not sure what was happening since i already had a reservation and filled out my details online, but took way too long. Anyway. I am thankful and appreciative of the service. Drop off at the airport was excellent.

The front desk clerk made it seem like it was required for me to carry their insurance. Her question was, "Do you want just the basic insurance, or do you want the premium insurance." At first I told her just the Basic, but then as I was filling out the initials on the sheet I asked her, "But insurance isn't required if I have my own, right?" She said, "As long as your insurance covers it, no, it isn't required." I told her, "Okay, so my insurance will cover it, so I don't want the insurance coverage." She snatched the sheet off of the counter and said, "No worries.. that will just be refunded with your deposit." Instead, she turned in the sheet. I inquired with the manager when I got back and she was going to look into it and give me a call back, which has never happened. The front desk rep was there at the time I was talking with the Manager and we brought her over to get her memory of the situation. The rep said, "Yeah, that conversation is vaguely familiar. I do recall something like that happening", but that was it. The manager said she'd talk with her General Manager and return my call, which has never happened. The shuttle ride was fine, but the driver didn't get up and offer help for us to get onto or off of the shuttle. Throughout the experience, I felt like a Dollar Sign and not a human. As long as I'm out of their site, and they got their money, apparently they're good.

They gave me a bad car to begin with. The car already had an Oil change required warning sign. The car had an empty red bull can. When I complained the same to the Hertz customer operations manager at Salt Lake City, he was least interested in listening to what I was saying and was very adamant in accepting the fault. When I said the vipers were making a screeching sound and the viper auto mode was not working and I had to manually move it up and down, he said that Hertz does not guarantee the working of auto vipers and some cars don't even have that feature. I am renting cars since ages and never felt experienced such a terrible customer service. Never choosing Hertz again in my life.

The in airport pickup was great. The agent was great. The car worked great for me. The only reason why it didn’t get the top-top rating was because the poor desk agent had to switch between programs for 3rd party purchases (like kayak) and that took quite a while. For their sake I’d like to point out that’s inconvenient and not the way that most rental companies work. But it was a minor thing and overall I was very happy

CHECK CLOSING TIME! We booked the car for a 2pm pick-up, and this Enterprise closed at 2pm so I'm not sure why that was even an option. I was Ubering from Provo to get this Enterprise with 5 kids in tow. We arrived a few minutes late, and there was nobody there. Which meant we were stranded, and needed to get back to Boise that day. Ended up having to dish out more than $500 to get a car and get back to Boise. Yes, we should have been on time to our pick-up, unfortunately, circumstances didn't allow it. But again, I'm not sure why they would allow us to set a 2pm pick-up if they were closing at 2pm. Maybe this is a KAYAK problem.

Staff were friendly. Car was great. Good value. Easy pickup and drop off. The only thing we had difficulty with was trying to see if we could change drop-off locations. We could not get in touch with anyone directly, other than a calling service who only was able to leave a message. We never did hear back on that, but it all worked out anyway.

NU Car Rentals – Salt Lake City Airport | Formal Complaint & Demand for Refund Reservation: 6750285640NU | Agreement: SLC01-52068 Dates: September 26–27, 2026 | Paid: $136.93 Reserved: Compact SUV (Nissan Kicks class) Received: 2024 BMW 228i AWD sedan I am demanding a FULL REFUND of $136.93 for what I believe was a potentially deceptive bait-and-switch sales practice involving misrepresentation of vehicle availability, coercive upselling, and threatened cancellation of my prepaid reservation. I reserved and prepaid for a SUV because I am 6’8” and require an SUV to accommodate my height. Instead, I received a sedan after declining a paid upgrade. WHAT HAPPENED While waiting in line, I watched the female counter employee tell three customers ahead of me that their reserved SUVs were ready and available. Each was immediately offered a larger SUV for an additional fee. All three accepted and paid for the upgrades. When it was my turn, the employee told me my SUV was ready and offered the same upgrade. I declined and said I would keep the SUV I had already reserved and paid for. She walked to the back, as she had with each customer before me, returned, and suddenly announced that my SUV was unavailable. She offered me a sedan instead. I explained that I am 6’8” tall and would not fit in the sedan. She responded that this was precisely why I “have to” pay for the larger SUV upgrade. I told her I did not have to pay more. I had reserved and paid for an SUV and would gladly accept ANY SUV (compact or other) available. I was not asking for a particular make or model, only the vehicle category (SUV) to be honored which I had purchased. I pointed out that she had just told three customers their original SUVs were available, that all three had accepted paid upgrades, and that numerous SUVs were in the lot being offered as upgrades. She said the company was a small, family-owned operation and that I would take what they gave me or they had the right to refuse service and cancel my reservation. I warned the customers behind me in line that they might be given sedans if they declined the upgrade. The employee then threatened to cancel my reservation and told me to take a shuttle back to the airport and rent elsewhere. After I requested a manager, Shane intervened and allowed the rental to proceed. I ultimately received a sedan instead of the SUV I had reserved. WHY THIS IS SERIOUS The sequence raises legitimate concerns about potential bait-and-switch conduct: customers were told their original SUVs were available, offered paid upgrades, and I was told mine was unavailable only after I declined. Providing a sedan instead of the reserved SUV category, insisting I pay more to obtain an SUV, and threatening cancellation raises concerns about potentially deceptive or unfair trade practices. A disclaimer that makes and models are not guaranteed does not, by itself, resolve whether the reserved vehicle CATEGORY was fulfilled. I am requesting an investigation into whether this is an isolated incident or a broader practice across your locations, including whether employees are instructed or incentivized to withhold reserved vehicle categories to induce paid upgrades. FORMAL DEMANDS 1. Full refund of $136.93 to the original payment method. 2. Written confirmation that the $300 authorization hold has been released and no further charges will be assessed. 3. A written explanation of why my SUV was initially represented as available, why it became unavailable after I declined the upgrade, and why no other SUV was offered. 4. A formal review of the female employee’s conduct, the cancellation threat, and manager Shane’s handling of the substitution, including appropriate corrective action and employee coaching for the female employee. 5. Preservation of relevant reservation, inventory, vehicle assignment, upgrade transaction, incentive, internal communication, and available surveillance records from September 26, 2026. NOTICE OF ESCALATION If this matter is not resolved satisfactorily, I am prepared to file complaints with the Federal Trade Commission, Utah Division of Consumer Protection, and Better Business Bureau, and to seek legal advice regarding potential claims under applicable consumer protection laws. I reserve all rights and remedies available to me. Please provide a substantive written response within 10 business days, addressing each demand and explaining the basis for any refusal to issue a full refund. I am sharing this experience so other travelers can make an informed decision before booking with NU Car Rentals. I expect NU Car Rentals to take responsibility, issue the full refund, and provide a meaningful written explanation.

Luxury SUV

KAYAK
My experience was awful. My flight was delayed, so I arrived about 5-6 hours after my scheduled pickup. Apparently, after 2 hours they put the car I reserved "back out for rent." I had paid for a luxury suv, but they only gave me a standard SUV. They did not refund me for the upgrade I had already paid for. And they had the luxury SUV available, because they offered it to me as long as I paid another upcharge. All I got from the customer service person was "I don't make the rules." Also, their lot is not actually at SLC airport. It's a short uber drive or about a 2 1/2 mile walk from the terminals. They do have a shuttle, but it does not start running until 6a.m., so if you have a 7a.m. or earlier flight like I did, you'll have to drop off before they open and get an Uber to the terminal......or walk 2 1/2 miles. Fortunately, I was warned about this. As my Uber was pulling away, we were flagged down by two people (who look like they got the luxury suv I paid for) who asked if there was a shuttle. They had apparently not been told about the 6a.m. start time (it was around 5:30a.m at this point). Had I listened to the person behind the counter who told me to just get there at 6 and take the shuttle, I would have definitely missed my flight, because getting through baggage check and security took almost an hour. I believe the shuttle ends at 6p.m. as well, so make sure to check on that before your trip if you have a late arriving/departing flight. You might have to Uber to the rental then as well. Despite all that, the shuttle to the rental place (I at least got to take the shuttle on the day I arrived in SLC)was nice and clean and the driver was friendly and helpful. The car was decent, and seemed new, but my wife said it smelled like jagermeister to her. If you're going up in the mountains, I'd highly suggest something with a stronger engine than the Chevy Trailblazer. It struggled getting up. Also, the change engine oil light came on as soon as we got in the car, which left me wondering how well they keep up the maintenance. They were the cheapest option, so you get what you pay for. I will not choose NU the next time I'm in SLC.

NU Car really stepped in for me because I had to rent a car last minute because my previous company dropped the ball and didn’t have inventory. The rep was really kind and worked with me to find a great car for my trip that best fit my needs. She asked about the number of people, where I was going, etc. so she knew what to offer. It ended up being more expensive that I planned but for being a day of rental and for the higher tier we ended up going with, it was a good deal. Also for off airport rental companies, the NU Car shuttle runs really often. Twice as often as another one I tried. I would rent again

We had to try the other rental counters until one was able to rent us a car for 2 weeks. Another customer had the same experience at Budget. I will never rent from Budget again. Car wasn’t ready even though we arrived 1.5 hours after our established pick up time. Kept saying it would be only 5-10 minutes longer, due to the car being dirtier than they thought. Confusion between check in agent & the rep that hands customer the keys over; needing additional signatures and logging the VIN & plates after we left the lot. When the lady in front of me came back in and said the car they just gave her had a cracked windshield and the check engine light was on, i decided to forgo renting from them and called a friend for a ride. I went without a rental the entire visit because I was worried about my safety in a sketchy car they may give me and trying to find a safe Uber at 4am in the city. Sixt ar SLC has been great. The pickup and drop off are quick, easy, and friendly. I have both times received an upgrade on the vehicle. The shuttle has always been right there for me both directions. The one downside the first time I rented from SIXT was that there's no signage to tell me where to find the shuttle. I had to ask lots of questions to find it. And it's a bit of a walk away, past all the rental cars and out to the curb, in case that makes a difference to someone.

I went to pick up the car I reserved and pre-paid, I had a valid driver's license and my credit card with me but they wouldn't give me the car. They said they required a secondary proof of address ONLY FOR LOCALS, but wouldn't take my bank statements or my car insurance bill or my renter's insurance bill. They said it had to be a utility bill. I didn't have any, my utilities are included in rent so obviously I don't have utility bills. They didn't listen to anything I said and were extremely rude and inflexible. The manager was so rude I couldn't believe it. Had to take another Uber back to my office and now I'm fighting for a refund.
