KAYAK ’s top tips for hiring a car in Napa
Choosing car hire in Napa offers the advantage of flexibility and mobility, allowing you to explore the region at your own pace. With a car, you can easily visit the numerous wineries located throughout Napa Valley and create your own personalised wine tour. Public transport may not provide direct access to some of the more remote vineyards or boutique wineries, making a hire car essential for a comprehensive wine-tasting experience. However, be advised that drinking and driving is illegal, so it is recommended that you have a designated driver. Finally, using car hire in Napa lets you easily venture beyond Napa Valley and explore nearby attractions such as Lake Berryessa or the scenic coastal towns along the Pacific Ocean.
The airport closest to the city of Napa is Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (STS), located approximately 50 miles (80 km) south of Napa. To hire a car from here, several car hire companies are available, including major brands like Hertz, Avis and Budget. These car hire companies have their counters conveniently located within the airport terminal, eliminating the need for a shuttle to reach them. Once you collect your luggage, simply follow the signs to the car hire area, where you can easily find the counters of the different car hire companies.
Driving in Napa is on the right-hand side of the road. In the area, you will find a mix of cars, from modern sedans to luxury vehicles, reflecting the region's affluent and tourist-friendly nature. The roads in Napa are generally well-maintained, offering smooth driving experiences. However, it is important to be cautious of cyclists and pedestrians, particularly in downtown areas and near vineyards. Overall, driving in Napa allows for convenient exploration of the area's picturesque landscapes and vineyards.
Using Napa car hire may have a few disadvantages. During peak tourist seasons, such as summer and harvest time, the roads throughout the Napa Valley can get quite busy. The Silverado Trail and Highway 29, which are major thoroughfares, experience higher traffic volumes. Rush hour traffic tends to occur in the mornings between 07:00 and 09:00 and in the evenings between 16:00 and 18:00, particularly on weekdays. However, with proper planning and consideration of alternative routes, the disadvantages can be mitigated.

They did not have a car. They had no cars even though the site allowed me to make a reservation. The people there said that they don’t update their inventory. It looks like they have lots of cars online. You can select among many cars and classes, but they didn’t have a single car that we could rent despite making a reservation the same day. We were stranded. They said we could wait until their close time but couldn’t guarantee that there would be a car for us. I’m not talking about the type/model that we reserved. They said there were no cars available at all. It’s ridiculous that you can make a reservation online and show up without any cars of any class being available. I don’t know how they run a business.
