KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Dublin

  • When you travel to Dublin, consider getting a car rental to benefit from your trips fully. Dublin car rentals offer the best way to adventure the city's most vibrant locations without depending on third-party transportation services. While the city has an excellent public transport system, you may not reach certain destinations via public transport. For instance, art lovers who wish to sightsee at Henry Cowell Redwood State Park Campground, 59.4 miles from the city center, can conveniently get there via car in about 1h 13min instead of 3h 24min by BART and bus.
  • If you are flying into Dublin, you’ll likely land at Oakland Airport (OAK), 15.3 miles from the city center. Consider getting your car rentals in Dublin at the airport. Some car rental agencies have desks at the airport terminal, while others offer pick-up services. Also, other rental companies provide shuttle services for car rental pick-up locations. The popular agencies at the airport include Fox, Budget, Enterprise, Alamo, Hertz, and Dollar. Book your car online to avoid long queues at the rental desks.
  • When driving your car rentals in Dublin, expect to encounter jaywalkers. Although the practice is illegal in the city, pedestrians crossing the roads without signaling is common. Drive carefully to avoid hitting them because you don't want to get yourself in trouble, even if they're on the wrong side of the law. Another obstacle worth your attention is cyclists on the city streets. Being a bicycle-friendly city, expect cyclists when driving your car rental in Dublin. They often disregard traffic light rules. Be cautious to avoid hitting them.
  • Like other California cities, Dublin experiences considerable traffic snarl-ups, especially during rush hours. Expect morning rush hours to begin at 7:00 am to 10:00 am, and the evening rush hours start from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. If possible, avoid traveling during these times of the day. Public commuter areas are also worth avoiding during these times because they are brimming with cars and human traffic.
  • Book your car hire in Dublin at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Intermediate hire cars in Dublin are around 30% cheaper than other car types, on average

An Intermediate is an ideal choice if you're visiting with a family or a group of friends. However, an intermediate or compact SUV is a perfect option if you visit off-road destinations. An SUV is well-raised, making it ideal to maneuver uphill and bumpy rural roads. Also, be sure to pick a vehicle with a big fuel tank, especially when traveling outside the city, as gas stations are far apart.

  • What is the speed limit in Dublin?

When driving your car rentals in Dublin, expect varying speed limits depending on the roads you drive. For instance, when driving in a residential neighborhood, the speed limit is 40 km/h (25 mph), 25 km/h (15 mph) at blind railroad crossings, and 100 km/h (65 mph) on the highways. Again, you need to cap your speed at 90 km/h (55 mph) on two-lane undivided highways. Be sure to adhere to all the speed limits, including the posted ones, because the city harshly punishes speeding.

  • Where are the best places to park in Dublin?

Finding a parking spot in Dublin can be challenging. Therefore, if you intend to use car rentals in Dublin, consider booking a Dublin hotel with free parking lots to avoid the hassle of looking for parking places. Holiday Inn Dublin-Pleasanton, an IHG Hotel, Extended Stay America-Dublin-Hacienda Dr, and Hyatt Place Dublin Pleasanton offer free parking for guests. Also, you can consider garage parking at BART-Hayward Station, Tri-Valley Airport Services, or KarPark Automotive Storage and Event—parking in Dublin costs an average of $3 per hour.

They called and cancelled our reservation because the car was unavailable. Said it wasn’t their fault and happens often when booking via 3rd parties.

Pros:

Pick up was way too slow. But the drop off process was awesome. Just drop the key in the box and head to airport.

Cons:

The pickup at the pleasanton place was slow. Time is money. Sitting around waiting for folks to come and go to figure out what is going on....only to rent you the car that has been sitting on the lot for the whole time shows the need for process improvement at some locations.

The rental agent was extremely rude and disrespectful, and almost unhelpful. She should not be customer facing if she intends to treat customers poorly.

Cons:

Transparency! The car I was promised was not what I got including the option. The car smelled of smoke and clearly the previous renter had animals. The car had dints and the appearance was very subpar. I was embarrassed to even drive it. It set in my garage the whole weekend. I even returned it on Sunday. I felt I was treated like a second class citizen and I all I got was sorry but it is what it is. The only satisfaction I got from this rental was returning it early!! I would never recommend Hertz to my friends and I would never rent from Hertz every again!!

Cons:

Had to wait an hour to pick it up. It wasn't ready. Then, when they finally brought it out, it was filthy on the outside. The tire pressures were all wrong and there were many dents and dings on the exterior, including a stone chip on the windshield.

Pros:

Staff was friendly to get an upgrade. All downhill from there!

Cons:

Upgraded car smelled like smoke. Chip in window. Windows were dirty and literally could not see out of rear view mirror. Had to clean manually. Gas was 3/4 filled!! Worst rental experience ever!!!

The car was dinged up significantly and noisy for a hybrid. It did not handle well. In the online reservation process I thought I was buying full coverage from the rental company but it was fromi a third party...that was confusing and not what I wanted. I didn't appreciate that. I would have had to pay more for the rental car coverage. The onsite staff. was very nice and professional . The only good part of this experience. .

When I placed the order for this car on CarRentals.com, I was charged $40.95 which was described as: "the total cost of this reservation". When I went to pick up the car at Hertz, I was told that the vehicle license fee and taxes were not included - and was charged an additional $6.74. This information should be fully disclosed at the time the reservation is made.
