Take a look at our extensive car hire location map to find the best car hire deals near you.
Choosing to hire a car in Lofoten and Vesteralen is a great way to explore the local land. The archipelago is home to a number of beautiful natural landscapes that are best explored in the car. You could try and use public transport to get around, but it is more convenient and more comfortable to drive a car from place to place. You can go when and where you want, sticking to your own routine without the restrictions of public transport.
Generally, driving in this area is relatively straight forward as the roads are in good condition and the streets are well signposted. The biggest complication can be the weather, as it affects how fast you can and should travel, and you will need to make sure that your vehicle is equipped with the right tyres, and other winter-dependent features, to get around safely. Drivers in the local area are relaxed and generally follow the rules, but still, we recommend that you follow the signposted instructions instead of copying the driving behaviour of the locals, just in case.
While the legal driving age in Norway is set at 18, to hire a car you will need to be at least 19 and have held the driving licence for a minimum of a year. Many car hire companies will also apply a surcharge to young drivers if you are under the age of 25. If you are staying for less than 90 days in Norway, then you do not need to have an International Driver’s Permit and you can show them your British driving licence and passport to pick up the car. However, if you plan on staying longer as a tourist, then you will need to get your International Driver’s Permit.
