As is with most Irish towns, the roads are quite remote and vary in condition, so heavier cars tend to be better for the road. Tralee roads are accommodating though. If you're in the centre of town and don't plan on driving around the county, a small compact car will do fine. If you're using Tralee as a base to explore the rest of County Kerry, spend a little more and secure yourself a 4x4 or an SUV and make the most of your time in Ireland. If you're a smaller family and don't want an SUV, larger sedans are also well-suited to driving in Tralee.
The speed limit in Tralee and the surrounding areas follow the national guidelines for limits in the country, although the speed limit in the centre of town was recently reduced to 30 km/h to make it safer for the locals. If you're out on the open road on the outskirts, the speed limit is between 80 km/h and 100 km/h. National motorways and highways carry a speed limit of 120 km/h. These limits tend to differ depending on where you're driving and you'll need to pay attention on road trips as they can change quickly. Be aware of signposts signalling what your speed is.
It's always important to make sure you're staying at a hotel that offers free parking if you're hiring a car in Tralee. Finding parking in town isn't a problem, with several car parks located in and around the town. Almost all the parking in the town is paid parking and signs will say you need a Parking Disc, which needn't be confusing. Parking tickets are called "Discs" by the locals. What these parking places mean is you'll need to get your ticket from a machine nearby and pay before you leave.
