The silence, the room, especially the bathroom, food and friendly staff.
The twin rooms we had were located in a small house located uphill, they were vast and clean. The bathrooms are well equipped with a bath and a shower, and even an outdoor shower that we could not use, being winter. The lobby and its well appreciated fireplace was a real pleasure. The choice of meals at the breakfast and dinner buffets was great, the food was superb and the wine choice was well thought with high quality wines at reasonable price.
Visiting an hotel of this standard at the cold season we could have expected some heat in our rooms. The floor heating did not really work and the AC could only supply cold air ... As a result it was freezing cold in our rooms. The dinner buffet was rather expensive we thought (1400 Rands for 4 with wine) : the food is generous, diverse, very well cooked and presented and is what you expect in a mountain hotel but you cannot say it is fine cuisine. Last thing, the hotel management would in all respect gain in being a bit less stiff and distant with the guests.
Zuurberg Mountain Village is positioned high in the mountains near the Addo Elephant Park. It has a relaxed family feel and we enjoyed the evening buffet after visiting Addo.
Breakfast was fine - about standard for the category of B&Bs and similar (in other words, like all over SA, the breakfast is unimaginative, but nice). Dinner was good. The ZMV's major benefits are its location and all it's staff. The owner's, the restaurant manager's, and reception staff's personal interest in guests is a great plus. Thank you for being welcoming and helpful. Great views - on top of a scenic pass. Great for sipping the free sherry!
Those streetlights among the cottages ...! Please switch them off, or at least mute them. The outside lights of cottages - which can be controlled by guests - are quite adequate. We don't need light pollution out in the mountains - and having it seep into the rooms is, at best, inconsiderate design. Two chairs per cottage veranda on the "view sides" (we had numbers 16 and 18, view in these instances was North) would be great - given that rooms are, presumably, mostly occupied by two persons.
Incredible staff, lovely location, great facilities!
