Staff in New Windsor was extremely helpful, polite, and efficient! We had significant problems with the rental vehicle. The sliding doors on the minivan would not lock with the remote. The brakes on the Dodge Caravan were sketchy, and the ride from Eagle Lake down into Ticonderoga in upstate NY was about 7 miles down a steep highway. The rotors are extremely worn, and the minivan squealed all the way down the steep incline while the disc brakes bumped over the rotors. The minivan would not start at the end of the day while we were leaving Fort Ticonderoga. I called the 800 assistance number on the key ring, and THEY WERE NO HELP AT ALL. First they told me they would send someone out to jumpstart the vehicle, but I was worried that it would happen again. (We had a hard time starting it once before.) They suggested that after getting it started, I drive to the nearest Avis rental which was in Plattsburgh and 90 MILES AWAY!!! I told them I did not want to drive 180 miles round trip, so they suggested that I wait for road assistance to arrive and was told that roadside assistance would text me with a time. I waited 45 minutes with no text, and called them back. There was no answer. Fort Ticonderoga was closing, and I needed to leave as the gates were being locked! Roadside assistance did not pick up after that, and I was on hold for 45 minutes. I called the Burlington, VT Avis, and they told me to call Plattsburgh Avis which was extremely helpful. Plattsburgh Avis told me to call roadside assistance and request a two-way tow to exchange out the vehicle. I finally got back to the Avis roadside assistance, and the lady told me it would take 4-6 hours to do a two way tow. I told them that was unacceptable and the Fort was closing, and I needed to get the minivan out of the park. The lady said she would check with management and call me back. The park service was nice enough to stay and be prepared to reopen the gate for roadside Assistance WHICH NEVER CAME!!! The lady NEVER called me back, and I never got a text from anyone about roadside assistance. We finally got the van restarted ourselves. I called Avis roadside assistance again, and was on hold for 90 MINUTES just to tell them not to come, we got it started. That is the worst rental that I have ever had, and the Emergency Roadside Assistance number is a joke. I don’t know what I would have done if we had not gotten it started!!! I will look elsewhere for additional rentals. Tammy Curtis

I didn't realize the insurance I purchased on-line wasn't directly through AVIS so they pressured me into buying their insurance. They didn't clearly explain their "E-Toll" feature and they also charged me to refuel the vehicle even though I returned the car with a full tank of gas.
