Hiring a car in South Yorkshire is an ideal option for anyone who wants to enjoy the most freedom on their trip. There are a number of beautiful places in the region, including the Pennines and the Peak District National Park, which are best explored by car. The main other way of getting around the region is by bus, which isn't as practical for anyone travelling with a significant amount of luggage or larger groups.

Driving conditions will vary greatly depending on where you're travelling in the region. Outside the cities, you'll mostly find the roads to be fairly quiet, although they may also be a little trickier to drive on. They may not be as well maintained as roads in the cities, and blind turns are more common. On the other hand, cities will usually be busier, and you should be prepared to encounter narrow roads and one-way streets. This is particularly true in Sheffield, where you may prefer to use one of their Park & Ride car parks instead of driving in the city centre.

Most South Yorkshire car hire companies will hire a standard car to drivers aged 21 or older. However, if you're hiring a car between the ages of 21 and 24, you can expect to pay an additional Young Drivers Surcharge that's added to your daily fee. Some larger or luxury vehicles may be restricted to older drivers, either over 25 or over 30. You will usually need to have held your driving licence for at least 12 months. If your licence is issued by an EU or European Economic Area country, you can drive any vehicle allowed by your original licence. If your licence is issued outside this area or in Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man you can hire a car but not a larger vehicle, such as a passenger van.
