KAYAK’s top tips for hiring a car in Wick

  • Having access to a car anywhere in Scotland is an absolute must for taking in the beautiful scenery and going to wonderful, Gothic sites jam-packed with history and excitement. Similarly, car hire in Wick is essential for making the most out of all the fantastic things to do and see in this picturesque Scottish town. Car hire in Wick will allow you to travel to historic sites, including Noss Head, Castle Sinclair Girnigoe and Riverside Park. Behind Wick, there are also lovely hikes to do as you traverse the wild Scottish countryside. It's almost essential to have a car when travelling to this part of the world.
  • There are a few car hire options at Wick John O'Groats Airport (WIC). There is a Hertz car hire branch in town, but there is also a private car hire agency called Car Rental Wick Airport. You will not need to take a shuttle to the car hire office at the airport; however, you will need to take a taxi to travel to the Wick car hire agencies closer to the city centre. If you find the local car hire agencies are booked up, another option would be to fly into Inverness and take a car from there to Wick on a scenic coastal road trip.
  • Driving around Wick is ideal for anyone wanting a more relaxed driving holiday. The stunning scenery, rolling hills and coastal views will take your breath away. Roads in and around Wick are generally in good condition. There are long stretches of road, so you have to take fuel into account when driving. Satellite navigation will help you establish where the necessary service stations are. Anyone who loves driving will enjoy the dramatic coastline that lines the town of Wick.
  • Considering Wick is quite far north, temperatures rarely reach above 20 degrees Celcius, even in the summer months. This means the roads may be slightly icy for most of the year. It also gets dark early in the winter months, which more cautious drivers need to be aware of. Rural Scotland has some of the most popular driving routes amongst car enthusiasts, so you shouldn’t encounter too many issues when driving your hire car in and around Wick.
  • Book your car hire in Wick at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price

Pros:

So easy to pick up and drop off the car but that is obviously because Kirkwall is such a small airport. We were the only customers expected at that time, it was all dealt with very quickly and the staff member who handled it was out of the airport and heading off in his own car before we had even reached our car.

Cons:

The desk was closed and shuttered when we returned so we simply had to put the key in a drop-off box. This would not have been helpful if we had wanted to report any issues. The car was not comfortable and felt sluggish a lot of the time. Once or twice I wondered if it would make it up hills but it kept going.
